I think you missed what I said - mine has gear whine, not bearing noise. The only way to fix gear whine is to replace the worn ring & pinion. Once that wear pattern is established, you really can't 'adjust' it away. So, not much point considering a LSD for my existing diff. I do have the long nose diff. Since I have a good working LSD diff in the 350Z, to me it makes more sense to try to fit that, than to buy a used R200 long nose & rebuild that. I'm never racing this thing, so I don't see the VLSD being an issue in that regard. I will have to investigate the axle flange issue, since I would like to keep the speed sensors intact.

No, I read that, just like I said, not a diff expert lol. Never gotten into one, or needed to. Thanks for confirming what I suspected, that a whining diff needs a new gearset.

I get that you want to use what you already have but I don't know if that's necessarily the best solution. In your situation, Subaru R180 would be my choice.

Many thanks for the link & pic. It is most helpful to see how others have tried to resolve it. The home made version looks very practical in terms of containing the diff's desire to arc upward under load. The TechnoToy design looks like it would be easier to create, but no counter hold from above.

The problem is my diff has 250K on it, and the gear whine is pretty bad. I don't see the point in putting an LSD in it. I did also search months ago for a LSD that would work in the long nose - I don't recall finding a clear solution for that. Is there a specific LSD that you recommend? I haven't looked into new ring & pinion options.

Since I already have the 350Z diff, and I'm not planning on going much over stock HP, I didn't see the viscous design being much of a concern. As an aside, Volvo used a viscous clutch setup in their early AWD's, and that actually held more than 2x stock HP in practice. Is there a known flaw with the Nissan LSD design?

I'm not a diff expert, but if my diff was whining, my first thought would be to rebuild it. Diffs aren't really known for wearing out, but if it is, my second thought would be to just go get another. Yours is likely a 3.54 which should be easy to find for a reasonable price.

As for the problem with viscous diffs, my understanding is that if used hard, as they would be on a track, they get hot, and just kinda stop working. And I could be wrong, but at that point I think you just have to replace the diff. I would only ever consider a CLSD or helical/torsen.

The MFactory helical LSD mentioned above would likely be a good choice. There is also the OS Giken Superlock is another option which is a clutch LSD, but also quite a bit more expensive. I know Quaife LSDs used to be available, looks like they still sell them for R200s, but not sure if they're for short nose or long nose. AFAIK you can put a long nose LSD into a short nose with some work.

There is also the Subaru option. Pretty easy swap, should hold up fine if you're only going with stock VQ power, especially if you won't be launching or racing the car. They came in both CLSD and torsen, a 3.54 torsen should be pretty easy to find. This may actually be the easiest option of all.

  3. I think I'd just stick with the stock diff and put an LSD in it. It's already installed, ie, no retrofitting needed, and the 350Z diff is a viscous diff, which isn't exactly ideal. On top of the mounts, you'd also need to work out adapting the axles, and I don't know if there's a product out there to handle that, but if not, that could be pretty costly. Seems like a lot of work for not much benefit.

  4. Hi,

Not sure what I'm missing here, but I cannot figure out how to upload images directly from my computer. Images post just fine if using an image URL, but I can only manage to upload an image as an attachment, which can then only be downloaded, doesn't actually show the photo in the post. What am I missing?

    Thanks.

    fturbo930,

Check out -The guy with Larry Chen walkthrough Toyo Tire booth claims the Green 240z has a Lamborghini V12 motor in it.    Unforturnately, the hood was not open.     I guess we will never know for sure.         Green 240Z video at 4:29

                                                                       Toolman

I saw that video and originally had it linked in my post. Further research revealed that it has an LS3 in it, which is reflected in the edits to my post. I think the reason the guy thought it had a Lamborghini V12 in it is because that same shop is putting one into a Corvette, I'm guessing he's familiar with the shop.

  6. Toolman posted a photo of this car in his thread, and it caught my eye. Took a minute to find any info on it, but it was displayed at Toyo Tires Treadpass booth at SEMA. Still haven't found out who owns or built it, but it has Apex's Track Attack kit on it, and, apparently, a Lamborghini V12! (Edit - wrong! no V12) Looks like a pretty high dollar build. I'm hoping some more info about the car will come out soon.

Edit: Since posting this I have found out who built the car, along with an engine bay shot. Someone doing a tour of the booth with Larry Chen said it was a V12, and I assumed he actually knew what he was talking about. It is not a Lamborghini V12 lol. It's an LS. Still looks like a nice car, but not nearly as exotic an engine choice as I was originally led to believe.

Not sure if they're custom or not, but the flares look like MSA Bubble Flares from years ago. I never really liked the bubble flares but they look really good here.

Any more info on these cars? Do you know who built them? I've googled and can't find anything on the green car.

Edit: I've now found that it was at the Toyo Tires Treadpass Booth, and some additional photos of the car, but still no sign of who built it. It has Apex's Track Attack Kit on it, can't be too many of those around.

    They seem pretty reliable.

Honestly I don't trust any of the current suppliers for carbon parts.

Don't know if he still does them, but John C gave his hood and hatch molds to Stan at Benchmark Composites. Unfortunately no one seems to be aware of this source, so I don't know if that's still an option.

BTW... The company that made the composite parts for me is still selling S30 and S130 hoods and hatches using my molds.  Contact info:

  9. Have you looked underneath? Maybe the car took a hit to the suspension and not the body. That's some pretty unusual damage if the body is straight so hard to say what happened without more info. Also curious as to what that structure in the rear of the car is for, doesn't look like a typical roll bar or harness bar. Looks like it has something to do with the damage you're looking at, maybe some kind of ghetto reinforcement to the damaged area.

Cool to see where this goes. I have my 84 maxima engine apart right now prepping it for turbocharging.  It has the L24e in it and has the mn47 head. Looks like there is some low hanging fruit on the head. Will be cool to see what you come up with using your friends software. I was curious how hard it would be to remove the liners.  Probably not worth it for my HP goals. (That Im going to stick to and not get greedy) (I promised my wife)(Really!!!)

Also. What are your thoughts on the steel liners and boost? I know people have done it but has anybody ever seen any negatives to it?

My understanding is that removing the liners ruins the flow of the head since the ports end up being too big.

  11. Seems like HybridZ has had the bare minimum to run for a while now. The healthiest forums I'm on all have active admins that are proactive in keeping the forum running and improving, and on top of any issues. That is not the case for this forum, and one other I'm on, and both have been suffering. I would definitely like to see more active admin on here.

  13. That area is reinforced compared to the 240z. If you look on the other side of the panel you should see that it's made of some pretty thick steel with some reinforcement, and tied into the subframe, which also has reinforcements to hold the bumper shocks. The 240z has just a pretty simple bracket welded to the rear subframe. Your early 260Z might be slightly different from my 280Z but I doubt it.

Perhaps PMs could be disabled until you've been on the site for at least 24 hours or something? Wouldn't stop all of them, but would make it a little more difficult

I would say a week + 10 posts, and see how that works. I think banning new members from posting links could also help.

  15. Z Car Garage makes a great bolt in solution that appears to be able to handle plenty of power, much more than what you're planning. Expensive, but totally bolt in. The super 8.8 setup basically requires that you change your entire rear end, and if you're putting big brakes, 5 lug, etc. in the rear, then you kind of have to do the front now too. Lots of scope creep, vs simply dropping in the ZCG axles and being done.
