  1. Is there something like a JTR manual for SBF's? Ive always been a ford guy and prefer them to SBC's.
  2. Not quite that balls to the walls. Honestly i think im gonna bag the idea and go with a SBC because of how well its explained in the JTR manual. Im usually a Ford sort of guy but it looks like JTR really went thru everything.
  3. Hmm, maybe i should keep the 400m for other projects and go with something else for the Z then, 450ftlbs of torque would be quiet handy in a work truck.
  4. Nothing but the vaguest of details so far, i figure if i can get a definitive " yes ive done that and it works just fine" they will hopefully have some details. At the moment im thinking it wont work but since i can get the package for basically free i think its worth pursuing.
  5. Anyone else have anything on the 5r55e surving a 400m?
  6. Not a problem, thanks for the info. I found the wiki article as well but ive been reading taht when people swap in 302's and 351's into rangers and explorers they swap out the 5r55e as they mostly say it wont handle the power, but no one seems to have actually tried it. The 400 wont even touch 440ftlbs in the configuration its in and i dont really plan on doing much more than warm it up a bit. Still free is free, both these come from my parents who have some old cars on their land. Sadly its mostly big old ford trucks and while i like the 360/390 and np435 i dont see a 240z working well with either but the 400m and maybe 5r55e? That might be interesting.
  7. Hmm, the plot thickens. I was offered a 5r55e out of a 96 explorer for basically free. Anyone think it can hold up to a 400's power?
  8. I was originally going with a SBC because of how well its all planned out thru JTR's manual but since this motor is free i thought it might be worth a gander. This particular 400 is out of a Lincoln Continental so i imagine its a little different than the truck version but frankly this engine is sort of hard to find out much info on. As this is more for cruising higher torque doesnt necessarily bug me but i still want it to be a car and not to grenade my r180. Thanks for all the responses so far, hopefully someone has done this swap and can chime in as well.
  9. Thats more or less what im thinking. Im not looking for gobs of horsepower or 0-60 in 2 seconds or anything so i think the 400 will work for me. I imagine that they are similiar in weight to the SBC but ill have to dig up more info, the 400 is a hard engine to find out anything on really. Plus the grand or so that i was planning on for the engine can go into say a LSD or something.
  10. So this summer im planning on doing a 240z with a v8 and after reading the JTR manual i was going for a SBC but i was offered a ford 400 out of a lincoln continetal for free. Do you guys think it would be worth while? I cant remember much off the top of my head about the 400 except it had some in common with the cleveland motors but wasnt highly regarded at all. The engine is in good shape and i was sort of thinking that money i would spend on a SBC could be put towards other things. Thoughts? Comments?
  11. New to to the forum and to Z's but i wanted to get some advice on a project im thinking of doing. Ive always liked 240z's but ive always put off getting one, i think its time now, but im not terribly impressed with the stock engine and power. Add to the fact that my area has a good amount of cheaper z's that have engines on the downhill side and youve got my project : a 240z with a SBC. I want something that has enough power to be fun(and fast) but gets decent mileage, a lot of people claim to get in the low 20's with an overdrive tranny and a 300-400hp 350/383, how realistic is this? If this is at all true this sounds just perfect for me. Now we get to the super nOOb stupid questions: If my goal is in the 300-400hp range which would serve me better, a 350 or 383? Im not looking to turbo or supercharge here just a simple naturally aspirated, carbed engine. What manual tranny should i be thinking about that can handle 400hp and can work without lots' o fabbing that can still get me in the 20's mpg? Ive read that the stock rear end can easily handle 400hp, is this true? The end goal of this car is to be a sleeper fun, fast car. I dont care if i get loads of street cred for it, in fact ill probably just paint it flat black and go with it. I might even leave the stock exhaust(or something similiar and more restrictive) and have exhaust dumps hooked to something far less restrictive and very scary sounding, maybe have them a bit hidden so a quick glance doesnt notice it. It might be fun to see the looks on some of the more pretentious sports car guys around here when the realize that my Z is far more powerful than their insert-car-model-here. Also i have some mechanical ability, ive swapped engines and worked on a lot of older vehicles and my father is a pretty fair mechanic and is willing to help, so id like to stick to the easier bolt on side of things on this project, maybe later we'll go to the Z with a Saturn rocket swap but for now its probably out of my reach. Thanks
