I'd like to see if we can find those elusive GTORR newsletters!  Does anyone know who has them? I have a very good scanner, and I can easily scan them in color or B&W.

Does anyone at least know the date of the first newsletter?

    thxZ

John has them, and thinks he might already have them scanned. I spoke to him yesterday and he said he'd look  :)

    Hi Chelle,

No not the same kit, the Automirage is a fantastic bit of kit, it is on a tubular chassis and uses late ish BMW running gear, it does however need an IVA. It is a very close replica of the real deal in body terms.

The ones that I done were made by a company called Tribute Automotive in Dorchester also based in Dorset,  as mentioned before a well thought out kit but they suffer with air blisters and dry matting under the gel coat, I had an early body so they may have improved things now.

Aww, cool, thanks for the insight.. I've been seriously considering the Automirage..

  3. Thanks! The nose on yours looks more like an Alpha1 that someone cut the hood down on though. I'm going on the shape of the carious openings in the nose and the shape of the area around the parking lights, primarily.

Looks like a great start!!  Did you join the Facebook group too?

  4. Can it spin 8,000 RPM?

Nope, and neither can most V8s people put in this chassis.

6400 rpm stock, well blueprinted maybe 7000, which is more than most overhead valve, non race prepped, single cam engines as it has overhead cams.

I do want a Hartley type V8 for my black fiero .. that goes to 14k redline.. but the price still hurts my brain.

  5. Think that 12 cylinder engine is wrong for the car, IMO.  It's too big and too heavy.  A lightweight 3 Litre V-8 with a short stroke would be more fitting, IMO, as it would be closer to  the original  specification.

The 12 weighs less than a cast iron Small Block Chevy V8.. I think mine was about 325lbs.. an 12 cylinder has a distinct sound and smoothness.. The original GTOs had an all aluminum (2.5 liter) SOHC V12.. the BMW is 5-6 liter, SOHC and external dimensions and weight are about the same as the Ferrari engine  :)

Different strokes for different folks  :D (pun intended)

  6. Also, did you get ignition system figured out? I followed the discussion on one of the BMW forums and saw Fred with the V12 Vette was showing his setup with 12 individual coils. I run 6 dual plug coils and waste spark (fire coils on both the compression and exhaust stroke), which means any ignition computer that can fire 6 coils can manage it. And I batch fire injectors To fire 12 + injectors individually i would need to either get an EFI technologies ECU (almost $5k) or treat the engine as 2 six cylinders and run a computer for the left bank, and another for the right bank.. even with the EFI Tech ECU, you still have to use waste spark.. Short of a custom configured MoTeC M880, with 12 ignition outputs (for around $3k), waste spark is necessary unless you want to treat the engine like 2 six cylinders.

  7. Hi all, I am a newbe. We are just finishing-up our Alfa-One, on a 74 260Z, stretched 4.5 inches, Powered by a BMW V-12, w/ 4 Weber Carbs, Aluminum Flywheel w/ Stage II clutch, 280 Z LS Rear end, Toyota 4runner 4 wheel discs and a ZF Dog Leg, 5 speed Transmission, and Porsche Power Steering Rack, (Hi-end everything, to be brief). We have just gotten the car back from the paint shop,( silverstone/ with a silver strip).

We had bought a Refurbished set of Borrani RW 3801 wheels and Splined hubs from MWS in GB. but the Deep offset of the RW 3801 wheels will not work on the front, so two of the wheels are currently posted on Evil bay, ( perfect and correct for the rear), and are looking for a more correct, lip laced wheels for the front. There are a couple of Videos on U tube, done during to build process. (go to Datsun Ferrari 250GTO, Weber or something such as). Regards all, Bob Lesher in Astoria Oregon

Welcome!! Isn't this the car that was listed with several Alphas on "Bring a trailer" in the Pacific northwest a couple months ago?  Glad to see you're digging in on the car. Also I love the Montreal! I have a couple Urracos, which share the same distributor cap :) Your car is looking great! Please post more!

  8. Here's a new thing that I'd like to do this summer....

The Zed bonnet had the louvers, and the GTO wings have the vent slots, so can we make some kind of vent slots in the back corners of the engine bay?  I think I can get in there with a   11/2   inch hole saw and make two holes in a vertical line, then connect them for a slot.

Would that be a problem with the stock L28 engine?  You wouldn't want to end up with a banana car.

I drilled holes in the sheetmetal behind the front shock towers.. then reinforced it and added some 5" fans to help extract heat.. I feel like every little bit we can do helps

  9. What kind of jack do you all use?

I've got the standard Zed scissor jack, and I'm wondering if it would cause damage to the bottom on the fiberglass rocker?  I suppose I could glue on a shallow piece of channel in the four places where you'd put the jack.  I think some kind of hard rubber would be better.  Both metal or hard rubber channel could be manufactured, then attached with glue or fasteners.

I welded moly tubing into the chassis inside the rocker and behind the front fenders. Technically, if I have a flat on the side of the road, i could use the original jack, but I also welded air jacks into the car so I can jack mine with an air hose. :)

  10.

"I had never seen the interior of this one!! Thanks for sharing!!"

The Moss car is probably the best example of how the cars looked when they were leaving the factory.  They were simple, with no luxury, except for the demisting nozzles.  To save weight, they  even left of the door panel finishers, carpeting, ant most everything else.

Every original GTO I have seen in person had the interior all exposed metal and painted either silver or black.. with simple blue or black seats. Of course there is the one with roll up windows and full interior, but I haven't seen it in person yet.   :)

I have carpet, sound deadener, and A/c because I don't like to arrive at a car show looking like i just ran a marathon.. lol.. I do want more period seats though.

  11. Not many changes here on my stuff to show. The White GTO is still on the table - we did give up on using the 350Z front suspension and switched to C4 Corvette, but still a long way to go .. I've started making body parts for it though..

Before spring I want more appropriate seats in the red GTO.. The coilovers really made the stance look a lot better..

I'll try to share some detail shots this week.

I made my Jack hole plugs from a chunk of aluminum with a file.. took a while, but i think the result was worth it  :)

  12. Great looking car, Lee.. It doesn't really seem to me to be from the old Alpha molds either - so much of the nose is different... The trunk doesn't even seem to be Tom's trunk kit.. though the rear might be his rear .. I see bits of several different cars.. perhaps it's something early from Tom (ScorpionZ)  I'm honestly a little stumped.. I'm not really used to being stumped by any of the GTO replicas  lol

Both of ours started life as Alpha1 cars.. and were modified far beyond that.

  13. If you really want one of these cars I would suggest (based on the info you provided) you sell what you have - and you may be lucky to recoup half your expenditure - then buy a completed car and modify it to your own taste and pocket. There is a lifetime of work in that alone.

This is sound advice.. do with it what you will, but there is so much more work in successful execution of these things.

  14. Thank you very much for the info Chelle and I am sorry if you thought I slighted your awesome GTO.  I didn't mean too but I thought you had sold it AND I forgot just how awesome it came out after you made all those changes and lengthened the nose.

Still not sure if I am up to making my own aluminum trim rings so I might just take Peter up on his offer.  BTW, yours look really good!

I promise, i didn't feel slighted at all, I think you're awesome, and your build inspired me long ago :)   Thanks for your kind words! The person who got upset with me was the guy who made and sold the Scorpionz parts. I didn't have issues with him, I just felt the trunk kit could use some improvements, or, more correctly, I felt there were a few things someone using the trunk kit could do to get a better final result, and that metal was probably a better route for anyone with the skill to make it.

I probably spent 2 weeks on my rings getting to the point I was happy with them.. i do sometimes get a little anal about some details.
