  1. wikipedia RB engine... it lists all the differences in each series motor.
  2. What would be the point of supercharging it instead of running a more efficiant turbo? Putting an rb25 turbo on is plug and play, not costly, and you see boost low enough in the revs for lag to be a non-issue. After all the money spent fabbing up a SC system you could have done much better with an upgraded turbo and fuel system. If your argument is more immediate torque reponse for drifiting, a properly sized turbo, well tuned engine out of boost and a good driver can easily compensate for such an issue. So I ask again, what would be the point?
  3. Im running Electromotive TEC3, but its total overkill. You could go with any of the above mentioned systems for a lot less money with just as much usable functionality
  4. Progress has moved slowly these past few weeks. Snow storms left the shop closed for a few working days and the time since has been spent playing catch-up, i.e. not working on my own car. I also managed to break my digital camera when it was in my pocket the other week while moving a transmission onto a stand. Photos will be delayed until I get a new camera. The head is off both motors, as expected the old motor is total junk from the piston heads down. No salvaging it. The head looks fine though, so Im going to have it decked and use it on the new block since it is already ported. The cometic HG would have been good for another use by the looks of it had I pulled it back when the engine first died, but corrotion had built up and ruined it. The ARP headstuds and GReddy timing belt were pulled off the old block for use on the new one. I am now waiting on a new head gasket and a few other parts before I begin the final rebuild. I am also having a new crank position sensor bracket fabricated for better rigidity, no more issues of the signal breaking up at high RPM anymore hopefully. More news to come soon.
  5. Well the engine arrived earlier than expected. I had pulled the old engine out yesterday, so the timing was perfect when I walked into the shop this morning and found my new RB20 waiting for me. I went to work pulling the acessories of of the new engine and next week will begin shifting all of the upgraded components over fromt he old engine. I should have everything stuffed back in there by this time next week, and then its off for tuning! Here are a few pictures of my progress so far.
  6. Its been a little over a year now since I bought my 240 and began swapping in and building the RB20 engine. Back in June I had catastrophic failure, the freeze plug came out on the interstate and the engine overheated to the point of boiling oil, and a seized block. Since then she has not seen much work. I recently began an Automotive Techincal Sciences program at a local college and have brought the 240 in as my ongoing project for my degree. I have since bought a new RB20DET engine for it and am in the process of pulling all the goodies (Holdet turbo, exhaust mani, timing belt, head studs, ect) off of the old RB and preping it for the new engine to be dropped in. Ill be documenting this build from start to finish with photos, and will update progressively as things move along. Wish me luck!
  7. Damn, all things considered you came out it alright it looks like. At least you didnt bounce off and go into the other wall. Glad youre okay and theres no critical damage done to your car.
  8. I drilled out the stock RB20 motor and tranny mounts to fit into my 240Z... worked perfectly. It doesnt sit as far back against the firewall as Id like, but it still give more than enough room up front for radiator, fans, IC piping ect. Cheap alternative to buying aftermarket ones. Ive also replaced my main seal with one from a 300zx instead of sourcing one from an RB20 tranny, same thing, works fine.
  9. Despite my issues with it Id still go RB20... The sound, the rev-range, the easily made power. Plus there is just something badass about having an RB engine swap. Ill never get tired of the way an RB20 sounds.
  10. Yea, I was thinking the same thing. I was just looking at prices of another RB20 and $750-$1K seems better than pulling a building out my existing bottom end for the reasons you just described, and as you also mentioned, ill have spare parts and can take my time building my existing engine. If the engine isnt running at 100% when I get it fired up Im gunna source another longblock and just swap it. That would only take me a few days as apposed to a month of build time. Oh well, good thing I bought another car when I got to NC. Seems like Im gunna need it for a while.
  11. Well I plugged the head with a expandable freeze plug and that seems to do the job. Did an oil change as well. Battery is damn near dead and even with a jump box and a jump from my other car it was turning over but not catching. It rumbles like it wants to start, i can feel the pistons cranking over a bit, but it just wont fire up. Im gunna change the spark plugs tomorrow as Im sure theyre all fouled up after what happened, just didnt have the time to get to it today. Im thinking that the bearings are shot. The engine was squeaking and shreeking horribly when it over heated, sounded like the bearings were going. I didnt see any metal shavings in the oil, gunna check it later once it settles for copper. Im starting to think that Im gunna need to pull the block and replace the bearings/rings. If thats the case the car will be out of commision for quite a while untill I have the dough to build the bottom end a bit more as long as Im taking it apart. I imagine once I do get it fired up Ill be able to tell more accurately whats wrong with it. Looks like I could be another few grand deep into this engine before im gunna get it running right.
  12. The oil was burnt, yes. When the car overheated I pulled the dipstick and the oil was practically smoking. Is it possible that I blew something in the bottom end that caused the oil consumption? And yes... it was a unbelievably s****y road trip.
  13. Ive done a bit of searching and have found some bits of info here and there, but wanted to get some peoples oppinions on the issues Im having with my RB20. I was driving the car from Miami, FL to Asheville, NC and along the way the following issues came up: -Blew out the plug from the old turbo H2O line fitting on the back of the head. Fixed it and kept driving. -Blew the tranny main seal shortly after that. Tranny fluid leaked onto my exhaust and the transmission well burst into flames on I-95. I pitched the car into a muddy shoulder and put out the fire. Tow truck got stuck in the mud and it took about 2 hrs to get the car out. Sourced a main seal from a 300zx and replaced it. -Another 70 miles later the freeze plug on the back of the head blew out, temp gauge didnt go up (bad sensor?) and i ran the car with no H2O/coolant for IDK how long, but it overheated pretty badly. At that point I had the car flat bedded the rest of the way to NC. So the car is sitting in my back yard with no freeze plug. I went to start it up this morning and it turns over fine, no ticking or whinning from the engine or head (thank god, I dont think its warped but cant tell yet). The car is very low on oil though, and Im worried that it might be related to the overheating incident. Ive run water through the radiator and let it pour out the open freeze plug and I dont see any oil in the water. When turning over Im not getting any smoke from the head or exhaust. Is it possible that some damage to the head caused oil loss? I just had the head ported/polished/decked, new Tomei HG with ARP studs installed, so I seriously doubt the HG is blown (unless the head got warped). Ive heard you can use a plummers expandable plug to replace the freeze plug and they work fine. Anyone have any experience with that? Even if the head is warped it should start up, it will just run like crap, right? Im going to do an oil change, plug up the block and see if its alright. Anyone know of anything else I should check before starting it up again? Any input would be appreciated. Wish me luck.
  14. Word, I recognize you now. Thanks for the props on CD.
