  1. Turned out it was the theromitme switch and the water temp sensor, the wires had gotten corroded. Replaced them and the car ran great. I had the guys at Nissan adjust the valves and the timing slightly and the car passed emissions no problem. Such a relief.
  2. I have the same problem and i hate electrical stuff. I have a 1975 280z and i modified the taillights with dual round trailer lights on each side (same look as a corvette). I wired then as per the directions and everything seemed to work then soon after my turn signals failed. At the moment i have: Hazards that work (only without headlights on), Headlights work but i have the turn signal dash lights staying on whenever the headlights are on. All lights work in this condition. However i get no response anywhere when i try the turn signals, no flasher clicks no dash light, nothing. I changed out flasher units, cleaned contacts and took it to a mechanic who decided after 3 hours that it was the hazard switch. I have power coming through the green wire and flowing to the hazards but no power will flow through the blinker wires out of the hazard switch.
  3. I have read the EFI bible but some of it is over my head. I dont have the money to repleace every part until i finally find the problem. My 75 280z is doing the same thing. The car had been running really rich and the idle would go up to 2000rpm when warm. It failed emissions misserably. I changed the plugs and removed the air regulator. It had been getting oil blown through it, i cant find any other threads about this problem. The engine has 190k miles so im wondering if it isnt getting reverse flow from the rocker cover sending oil through the air hose. Anyways i replaced the air regulator and the car ran great, halved the emissions but failed again (only just). I decided to run a bottle of guarranteed to pass through it. It had the same hesitation problem as mentioned above. Most noticable on the high way at 2800-3500rpm. This cleared after half a tank was burned and ran beautifully. Then i put regular (instead of premium) and it quit on me 6 times. After waiting 15 minutes (and it cooling down) it would start first try and off id go again. Finally it wouldnt start and i had it towed home. Eventually it would start again but run sooooo rich. I completely removed the air regulator and it started fine but reved up to about 2000rpm (no smoke). I cleaned the air regulator and reinstalled it. Ran soooo rich it died again. I could just put another air regulator on but no doubt ill have the same problem next month. Any ideas? I wanna do the JTR conversion but i dont have the money atm.
  4. Thanks guys. I think i will try and fix the standand engine and gather the parts for the conversion over some time. It will happen eventually and that way i can put in the LS2/T56 i always wanted in. Why rush right.
  5. Good thread, ive found it difficult to get basic information with the search because there is so much complex stuff choking the basics. I am on a budget too as i just moved to America and the gov doesnt let you work for 6 months. I have a 280z and have had trouble with the stock engine. I figure it was going to cost a lot to fix it so i want to do the sbc conversion. Yes i have the JTR manual on the way and cant wait to read it. I have been searching craigslist every day for a doner car as im looking for something with radiator, 350, manual transmission and all the gizzmos. I have been specifically looking at Camaros as they seem to be cheap and have all i need. I did some research on the camaro V8s and they seem really weak in the late 70s and early 80s. I would have expected well over 200hp from the 305 but they are like 145hp! I would love some help as to what year and type of sbc people are using. Id love the LS2 but thats not happening, as i want to get this done for $2000 as well. Also I want to have it done in 2 weeks (i have a lot of spare time). Is this doable? People say the engine swap is easy and its like all the other stuff that takes the time. Im not doing brakes or suspension yet, just the swap. In Australia you need to get an engineers certificate to register a modified car, will i need anything like that in the US? We dont have smog either in Australia and im worried ill put the time, effort and money into this only to be knocked back because of emissions. My car is a 75 and it DOES require emissions test here in CO. How can i find out about this stuff?
  6. I want to fit a roll cage to my 280z, i rang a company and got a good price but they said its for the 240z not the 280z. Surely if it fits the 240 it will fit the 280 right?
  7. I am also interested in doing a lexus conversion in my 280z. Can you tell me how you decided on your engine as opposed to say the chev 350? I am concerned that there doesnt seem to be much technical info on the lexus conversion, so im looking toward the LS1. However it does seem that the lexus would be a great engine being light and powerful. Are you just gonna face the engine fitting problems as they arise or do you have some help?
  8. Im really not much of an electrical engineer so i could use some help. I pulled the orginal z taillights out and fitted some round tail lights. I wired them all up properly and tested them. Everything worked well. Then it seemed each time i tested them after that i lost something. First it was the RH side turn signals. So i went and bought 2 flasher units. From the manual there is 2 flasher units. When i go to install the 2 new units, i find 1 is the same size as the new ones, the other is about 4 times the size and not plugged in. The only wire that would fit it had a wire completing the circuit. I removed the negative battery cable between swaps and started testing what went where with the new flashers. By the time i had tried everything i had lost the reverse lights and the windscreen wipers and all the turn signals, not even a click in the flasher or light on the dash. However stop and tail lights and headlights still work fine. Any ideas? Oh and i kept checking the fuse box and they are all good.

    My 280z

I had more time than money so i started building my z. Eventually i wanna put an LS1 and T56 in it with 16 inch chrome mags and flare kit, roll cage and bigger brakes. I built the front airdam myself, its not perfect but it looks tuff.
  10. I want to put a bolt in roll cage in my 75 280z. I found one being sold by swracecars but they say its just for the 240z. Surely it will fit in my car, the bolt in points should be the same i would think?
