  1. Can anyone tell me the acceptable main bearing clearance for my L28ET build? (F54 block) I have a Chilton Guide and it is definitely mentioned to check that they are correct, but the actual acceptable clearance measurements are not listed. (2nd error/omission that I have found so far...) Anyone help please?
  2. Just wanted some input from other folks who have purchased their L28ET motor. A local seller on craigslist listed a 1981 280zx L28ET motor and transmission (automatic) for sale. I contacted the seller and he advised me that their is no ECU and from the pictures no wiring harness either. Miles are unknown, but he said it was pulled from a wrecked 280ZX a few months back, and is in good working condition. His asking price is $1000.00 firm. Just wanted some opinions on his asking price? I don't know if this is too high considering it's missing the ECU and harness. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
  3. my 83 stock L28et has a stumble at idle, dose not want to take throttle under load, will not build boost till high rpm, and will only make 4 PSI . I have verified all injectors are working, all cylinders are firing, I can not find any boost leaks on the stock Jpipe , I have cleaned all electrical connectors and grounds per instruction on http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/electricalconnections/index.html , and checked all grounds , car is running stock engine management system. The car takes throttle very well at idle but sounds like it had a random miss any help would be very much appreciated. The stumble under load can be heard here at 25-30 secs in to vid very clear. Just a short vid of the issues with the car and showing it taking throttle at idle
  4. Listen to that turbo winding down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BPuBpE4pH4 The current revision of my Datsun 240z exhaust I built, is full 3" turbo back from the stock l28 garret t3 turbo, custom made turbo flange adaptor from 2.5" to 3" downpipe with v-band, mandrel bends and magnaflow round muffler as a resonator to quiet the rasp and drone. quiet enough for SCCA sound meter. Stays under 90 decibles.
  5. Ok, So I need some help with wiring. I am swaping a 1981 l28et into a 1976 280z I recently just found out that the wiring harness and ECU that I have is from an 1982; after checking the serial # on the computer and noticing that the wiring harness did not have a hook up for the dropping resistors. I have been having difficulty understanding the wiring diagrams for both the 1981/2 harness and the 1976 harness. I have been using the Bumble Z ( wiring torutrial as a reference but I am still confused. Most of what I have figured out is quite simple: the injectors, CAS, other sensors, but thats about it. Problems 1. The Coil and Ignitor This is my original coil. What can I remove from this harness what should I keep? This is my "new" coil I do not have the part of the harness that plugs into it but I have firgured out a way to make a plug for it I just need to know what goes to what. The pins on the ignitor are shaped like a T (a Black w/ whit wire and a Blue wire run to the ignitor from the coil) I cant figure what I should wire to this But I am pretty sure it has to do with the computers spark control. 2. Fuseable Links I have both fuseable links right now for the old engine and the "new" In this picture I have them mounted next to each other. I understand from the Bumble Z tutorial the only wires I need are the green a brown wire on the "new" harness. I am a little uneasy about removing or cutting any of the wires that lead to the existing fusable links. (Do I need this to run my lights or fuel pump?) 3. Ignition Harness This was pluged into what I belive is the ignition harness of the "new" ECU and the back end of this plug should somehow run to the ignitor/coil. In the bumble z tutorial he had a 6 prong plug, his one has 8. 4. Switched Power In the tutorial there are a lot of things that need to be run to switched power what should I use? I think I have firgured out that the black w/ white wire that runs to the coil should be switched power but im not really sure. I will really apreciate some input please dont tell me to search more, maybe at least point me in the right direction. I live in the Seattle area but my car is in lakewood (hour south of seattle). If there are any wiring gurus that can help me I would more than greatfull. Also I am a college student at Seattle University studying photography. i am willing to trade som automotive photography services for help with the wirring. Side Note: I am really losing morale I already have had one of the turbo engines I was working on stolen that I bought for $1000, wich is a lot of money to a college student. Thanks for all the help!!!
  6. WTB a l28et swapped Z. Please post pics of what you have or link a thread. Location does not matter i will fly out to it. No projects please looking for one that is good to go.
  7. Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a 280zx with a L28et turbo engine. Would like to buy as complete as possible, Post or PM what you have w/ details, price etc. Trying to find a donor car that runs but isn't very nice for the outside, really just need the engine. I'm swapping it over to my '78 280z. Preferably manual, unless its possible to bolt my current stock 5 speed transmission to the other engine w/o problems. Thanks.
  8. Hey Guys, I have an 84 maxima, and I am looking for an L28et to swap into it. The price I am willing to pay really depends on mileage and condition. I am looking for a full engine, and I would like the air meter and ecu too. I am located in VA, and would consider driving a few states away for a good deal, if it's not with in reasonable driving distance you must be willing to ship the engine. Also, if you have a full 280zx with the turbo engine that you are looking to sell with a known good engine I would consider buying the whole car from you too. As a side note I am also looking to buy first gen 81-84 maxima 5 speed swap parts. Either just the parts or a whole 5 speed gas parts car.
  9. Hey just made this account and wanted some advice, and opinions. I swapped the engine into the car about a year ago, I got it running, but I had some serious power loss issues, I found an intake leak. So right now I've got the head off and am getting ready to get it cleaned. And just get it running stock, I plan on doing a major build come August. Anyways my goal for this car would be autocross, leading up to getting the car on the track. In that sense I would really love to push 26-28 psi. With that in mind could I get some good input
  10. I am beginning to source parts for my S30 - L28et swap and already have the long block (P90a - F54), but need everything else. My car is a late year-260z (December 1974). I am also looking for advice on transmission options as I have found endless information (somewhat difficult to sort through) on options. My car is an automatic if that makes a difference. I am looking to buy: Transmission (T5- or other??) Manifolds (Intake and Exhaust) Turbo ECU Wiring Harness Dizzy Fuel Rail everything else I appreciate any help or advice! Thanks! -Josh
  11. I am currently working out a L28ET swap into my current 1974 260z w/ automatic transmission. I have noticed that the automatic transmission itself is listed as fitting 1972-1983. Can I bolt my L28ET to my existing transmission or is there something else that I am missing or need to be aware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
  12. I'm looking for a L28et Harness w/ Z31 ecu conversion which would include: Harness, z31 turbo ecu, maf, & wheel. I would prefer it to be pulled from a running car. If no one can offer me the entire setup, I will start hunting for parts of the setup.
  13. Getting the Z out of paint this week. Need to get rid of the stock J-pipe. Have become somewhat familiar with the various options for intercooler setup. I do not plan to run a ton of boost but also, refuse to have the j-pipe. Looking for full intercooler setup with piping, BOV, etc., if possible. Located in the North NJ area.
  14. Well, I figured it would happen eventually. I'm trying to figure out the wiring before I get the engine in the car so the swap goes as quickly as possible. I've gone over the sticky as well as the more extensive and hidden version of the same thing. Harness is from an 82/83 280ZXT and going into a '76 280Z The diagrams and pictures I've seen have two plugs near the rubber firewall grommet, one for ignition (8 wire plug) and one for the fuel pump/fuel pump relay (6 wire plug). However, my harness has two 8 wire plugs, and the wires and colors do not match those of the diagrams I've seen. It doesn't even match the '83 FSM diagram. The person I bought the harness from labeled a couple wires in what seems to be the fuel pump and fuel pump relay plug harness, but I can't verify them obviously since the plugs and wire colors don't match what I've seen. Diagram that has been referenced: I'm also confused on the two wires that feed power to the EFI relay. They were connected to fusible links, but the sticky says stick them on the POS terminal of the starter. Shouldn't they be fed power after fuses? I'd assume I can hook them up to my fuses that are currently in the car (I did the maxifuse swap) but I'm not sure... Also, I'm unsure about where to wire the power wires that are in the EFI relay loom. 1 constant 12v and 2 switched 12v. If anyone has done this swap and would like to guide me on where would be a good spot to do this please let me know. Maybe I'm just thinking about this too much but I keep second guessing myself and running into weird issues like the plugs and wire colors not matching. Pictures attached show the plugs in question.
  15. Hi Guys, I'm going to be in LA from 4th December 2014 to the 8th December 2014. I am willing to travel upto 400 miles from LA. I am interested in modified z's and un modified z's. I preffer the zg arches with wide wheels look but anything considered. I am looking for rust free examples complete or incomplete. I would preffer turbo converted cars but a well sorted N/A is also an option. The cars (I'm looking at buying two maybe three) will be shipped back to the UK. The cars will be collected by the shipping company in my presence, Cash or wire transfer will be the method of payment My private email is jmcl.testing@gmail.com I will require a fair bit of information about each car and will need to see deatiled photos. Cheers guys and I hope to here from you soon. Adam
  16. Hey guys I'm looking for a complete turbo swap for my 240z. What I'm looking for is the engine forward (no trans)..preferably a p90'd complete engine w/everything etc. I have prepped my 240sx tranny to mate with a earlier series engine. As for location, I'm out of Monterey, California. Reply with pictures preferred. (415) four seven zero- 8674
  17. I am building a turbo L28 engine stroked and bored to 3.1 litres with an upgraded turbo. I have the 1983 CAS dizzy driving my Microtech ECU and Igniter box. I don't have the wiring harness for the dizzy that has the Green, black, red, white wires from the dizz going to Gr/Ye, Black, Bl/Wh, Gr/Bl wires in the EFI harness. I have read every post on this and there are some that describe the connections that correspond on the dizz end to the colours BUT there isn't one that correlates with another, in other words there are CONFLICTING posts. So I really need to get the correct way round. Here are the options I have seen. Looking at the dizzy four spade male connector box with the screw hole for fastening the harness on the top left corner.(see pic): One post says starting at top left going clockwise: Red, Green, Black, white. Second post says (same rotation) : Green, Red, Black, White. Also, if I am reading the FSM correctly it agrees with post one above. Can anyone Please help and confirm which is correct? Many thanks guys. Andy
  18. Hello, I am located in Greensboro NC and I am looking for several specific things for my 1971 Z. 81-83 l28ET with p-90 head, ecu, and wiring harness. If you have aftermarket ECU that's ok. (But must come with engine.) 77-79 5 speed manual trans. I am willing to travel up to 4 hrs to pick up parts, if you are further than that I will consider but would also like you to consider meeting me at the 4 hour mark. PM me with what you have and the price you are looking for and I will PM you back with an answer and contact information if it sounds good to me. I check my PMs regularly everyday so feel free to drop a line. I have my whole project planned out and recorded in an excel spreadsheet, and already have the funds set aside, so please consider PMing me as I have been waiting a while to start on this project. Regards, Jonathan
  19. First off, hello there, my name is Brad. I am new here... and yes this is another SHOULD I BUY THIS post so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been searching my local area and nearby states for a Z car (specifically pre 1979... no ZX). I am planning on doing a budget build and not a restoration. I will be going for the classic JDM look (fender mirrors, flairs etc.). I am a performance car enthusiast and currently daily drive a 2011 Subaru STi, however performance is not my end goal. I already have a great performance car so I want something that looks different for cruising and taking to some shows. I love the way the classic Z cars look, even stock they are gorgeous. This may upset purists but imperfections don’t bother me and this car will be far from perfect for some time. The imperfections are character and show history. That being said I don’t want a complete ROT project, as many don’t. After searching I found what I think is the best deal I’ve seen so far and plan on going to check it out today with CASH in hand but would love to hear some opinions and words of caution from those more experienced than I. Here is the ad: http://columbia.craigslist.org/cto/4576768231.html This car is just up the road so it’s a lucky find in my opinion. Some more information from the guy after talking with him and looking at pictures he sent me. - The floor pans are not rusted through, only surface rust. - The electrical issue is because he had someone else wire the car and they used the wrong harness. Everything works (lights, turn signals etc) just some of it is mixed up, like the wipers are turned on VIA the defrost button . So nothing major and something I will fix. - He checked the wheel wells and strut tower areas and said nothing was rusted through (I will confirm this) - The car was originally from Texas but spent 2 years in Connecticut, that’s where the little bit of rust came from. It now resides in Columbia, SC. I originally set out to find a carbureted setup to eliminate EFI and having to work with ECU/tuning. I currently do that on my STi but it can be tougher than making adjustments to a ye ol’ carb setup. However he said it runs great and has no issues so I shouldn’t have to touch the engine much at the moment. The only issue comes in when I do have to. Maybe someone can shed some light on this part, is it a good setup, easy or hard to work with and so on. I think that is the only thing holding me back at the moment (besides the obvious that I haven’t seen it in person yet). I know I’m forgetting some small details so I will update if I can think of anything. Thanks in advance! Purchase
  20. I've got an idea that is most likely ill advised, but I figured I would run it by those more knowledgeable than I before dismissing it completely! Anyway, let me first list what I've got (this is for a 75' S30 2+2 with an L28ET): I've got a manual 240SX 5-speed gearbox that is out and ready to be mated to my 4-speed bell housing. I've got a P90 head (which was cast with an opening for a mechanical fuel pump, despite not being intended for use with one), a camshaft with an eccentric end piece and a spare mechanical fuel pump. I've got a replacement radiator that comes from the factory with a transmission cooler (as was equipped with automatic models). See where I'm going with this? Would it be possible to pump the transmission fluid through the cooler using the mechanical fuel pump? As far as I can tell there shouldn't be any problems with this configuration, but being so deceptively simple leads me to believe I'm overlooking something obvious. Advantages would be: A.) Cooler transmission fluid. B.) The ability to constantly filter the fluid instead of relying on one small magnet catching only ferrous contaminants. C.) The simplicity of using readily available and professionally manufactured components from within the Nissan family. D.) Cost. I've got everything aside from the few fittings and lines required to connect it all. Disadvantages: A.) Not very efficient. B.) Pump not intended for the heat and viscosity associated with transmission fluid. Comments? Ideas? Suggestions?
  21. Hi to ya all. I finally got my new car over to Norway. I have a problem and that is that the car wont rev over 4000rpm, ive installed new spark plugs, new fuel lines, new filter. The old owner told me that the car has a engine from a "81 and the car has the original wiring and original ECU for the 280z. But then i dont have any detonation sensor or O2 sensors attached, in my head its not good. The car has a manual boost controller set at 10PSI. Why wont the car rev up? And is it just for me to get an ECU for turbo do i then need to change the entire engine wiring? If so does anyone have a wiring, ecu, and distributor they want to sell me? How about stand alone system, what is the cheapest and easiest setup? This is the old car to Scoutman75 on this forum Thanx for any replyes, Best regards from Norway
  22. I have been trying to get my 280z running again. I moved and changed jobs so it's been a while but finally getting back into it. I check all my wiring again and everything seems to be right. So I figured that I would check the board to make sure the jumpers were in the right place(I bought the car with the MS2 half ass installed and the wiring was shot). Anyways this is what I found. I am not sure if it will still work or not. It boots and lets me upload msqs to it and it does try to start. Also does anyone have the stock ignition and other setting I need to getting it running? I am using a 83zxt cas(360 slots). I appreciate the help. Also anyone in/near Waco, TX?
  23. I have a P90a (Non Hydr) that i'm planning on oppgrade with new larger stainless steel valves and I wonder how large valves can I use before the valve seats needs to be replaced ? And is it necesarry to do anyting with the valve guides to use stainless steel valves ? Thanks.
  24. I'm trying to decide whether or not to build this car up with a rb26dett, l28et, or leave it stock. I have all three motors in my garage. I know that I'm asking on a forum that is all about modifications but all of the paperwork I received with it makes it a tougher decision for me. So, what do you guys think?
