Default Got to make a few test passes today :)

After nearly a year and a half since the car has been to the track, I was FINALLY able to get out to make some runs...
Changed since the previous setup are...
88mm turbo, Electromotive TEC3, Techno Toy Tuning rear end setup, Armada differential w/ Z32TT LSD installed and 2.94 rear end gears...

First pass...23-24 psi
combination of all the new parts and the lack of seat time the last year and a half for the driver...
1.571 60'
6.605 1/8
100.97 MPH
10.762 1/4
111.43 MPH

I am kind of embarrassed to even post that run...
I was timid on the launch, and found that the 100 shot was not going to be enough to spool this turbo on the footbrake and still using the existing 4200 stall - the fix, install the 150 shot jets to spool the turbo quicker...
The other problem... the driver was thinking so much about what was going on, that he forgot how to drive the car...LOL!! - The fix, shift at the shiftlight, and keep the turbo in it's power band...

Second run ... 23-24 psi and the 150 shot
1.507 60'
6.120 1/8
117.17 MPH
9.504 1/4
144.01 MPH

The 150 shot helped the spool a little... It still did not hit it as hard as I would like, but it is coming around... The car launched smoothly, went straight, I glanced at the air/fuels and they were in the 11's. I stayed on the nitrous button the whole pass since it looked/felt good. On the way back, I stopped and weighed the car.... It tipped the scales at 2850 with me in it (a full 100 lbs heavier since I weighed it last. That diff, rear end setup, and the parachute mount is some heavy stuff, not to mention the larger turbo adding a couple LBS as well... On the way back from the scales a heard an occasional "clicking" sound from the rear end. I rolled around under the car inspecting everything, but could not locate the source...

The 3rd and last pass, was still at the same boost level and same nitrous shot...
1.445 60'
6.111 1/8
113.48 MPH
9.663 1/4
135.63 MPH

On the last pass, I found where the clicking was coming from, except it sounded like more of a grinding now... The rear brake calipers started rubbing the inside of the rear Draglites...so much so that they really started dragging and slowing me down. I could feel the heat coming off of them in the pits. Scottie was a real sport and drove home to pick up a pair of wheel spacers he had, so I could get the car home (20 mile drive for me).

My summary...
For not having driven the car at the track for a year and a half, I was pleased with the results. The brake problem will be a pretty simple fix. The Techno Toy Tuning stuff seems to be plenty strong. I will be launching harder to further test it's strength, but so far, so good. The turbo is definately harder to spool than the 76mm I was running. I did see improvement after each 60', so I am not going to make any rash changes (transbrake, new stall, etc) until I am able to test further the footbrake method. There just may be a bit of a learning curve for me to hit the sweet spot for those 1.3xx 60's that I was able to cut with the 76mm turbo. The tune was UBER conservative with running only 15-16 degrees of timing at that 23-24 psi. I still have another 10+ psi I intend to run, and this turbo doesn't even wake up until the high 20's in the psi range. I was short shifting, only around 7200 RPM's, where I have an additional 1000 RPM's left before my shift point of 8200 or so. So, the car is showing a little of it's potential. Now we just have to work on the driver!!

Sounds great for being the first time out with the new setup. That 8200 RPM shiftpoint you mention is screaming! I know the 2JZ revs, but that just seems so high. I plan to only rev mine to about 7k - of course, I'll have an entirely different setup (ie fast, daily driver).

I look forward to more runs. Some good video wouldn't hurt either.

Mike, how about all those extra lbs coming from all the extra food during the Holidays. I told Clark he could lighten his ride by giving up beer for awhile.

Good you got the time to get back out on the track again.

I need to talk to you about LSDs for my car.

Tom

Great performance for "taking it easy".
Don't worry about the driver...remember, just like riding a bicycle, at 150 mph!!!

Thanks all..
I'll keep you in the loop as to my next time out with the car, so any locals that would like to come check it out can...
Shaggy - the 8200 shift point is a little lower than I had the engine built for, so I will have some wiggle room on the shift point.
Tom - feel free to PM me or hit Clark up for my cell #, I'd be happy to talk LSD's w/ you.
Hanns - you crack me up!!

We'll see how the weather looks next week. I may be able to run Wednesday night and test out that new parachute...
Mike

Come on Z-Gad, that's disappointing... the car is now too slow for you. You should just give it to me and start a new one that's up on your standards

Good job!

This is a proper forum that's well-organized. Look for this info by using SEARCH or by looking through the drivetrain section.

Poor form.

Trip to the track was a bust... some dummy forgot to fill his nitrous bottle (thought I had enough), so it was a total waste of time...

Ran the car again last night...
Still having a couple of issues, but they are soon to be resolved.
First pass, launched the car hard, lifted the front tires a little (according to Scottie, Jimmy and Ken, boost was up and down, fluctuating from 22psi to 32 psi the whole way down the track. It was rythmicly up and down, the car went 9.4 @ 14x something, as I can't seem to locate the timeslip, but cut a 1.38 60' which shows that I can launch this large 88mm turbo with a 150 shot, the same 4200 stall, and same method of footbraking I was using with the 76mm turbo.
Next pass, oddest thing, touched the nitrous on the burnout to get a quick start, pulled up to the lights, hit the nitrous button, and... no nitrous, puzzled, I crawled past the 330' mark before the turbo spooled, and ran it out the back without the nitrous, and found without nitrous, the car was pig rich at 10.4:1 air fuel... The constant up/down was still there... got to the end of the track, pulled around, foot braked, tested the nitrous and it worked fine... hmm wierd, it worked fine the rest of the night as well, just that one pass. Oh well...
Anyway, disconnected the boost controller, tightened down the wastegate spring to 30 psi launched on the nitrous, cut a 1.457 60', 5.88 @ 122.36 in the 1/8 mile and car fell on its face on the back half of the track and ran 9.149 @ 148.74. Boost was still oscilating up and down the whole run and went between 26 as high as 36 psi!! car also saw 14.5:1 air fuel for part of first gear and almost all of 2nd gear!! Ouch!! duty cycle showed over 100% duty cycle on the injectors... I increased the fuel pressure, added a couple of degrees of timing, and added more fuel up top for the last pass. The guy behind me in line just ran a 9.24 @ 147 with his twin turbo Mustang and asked me if I wanted to run the next round since we were so close. I said Sure, that'd be fun.
So final round, he had me by .2 at the tree, I cut a 1.481 to his 1.463 60', I had caught up to him by the 1/8 mile running a 5.85 @ 125.20 mph (a personal best 1/8 mph), and finished the pass running a 9.038 @ 152.14 to his 9.367 @ 147.96 \
from what I hear, the crowd loved it!!
He somehow shifted from 1st-3rd and missed 2nd gear, so we were going to line up again. I checked my datalog from the run and found that I was still hitting 14.5:1 air/fuel in 1st and 2nd, so I decided to pack it in. Boost was still uncontrolable between the 26-36 psi, fluctuating up and down.
What did I gather from the night... gotta figure out my boost problem (I think I traced it to the wastegate itself... I was running out of fuel pump, as the change in injector pulse width made no difference on the air/fuel - I am correcting this with methanol injection. Finally, so far so good regarding the Techno Toy Tuning rear end parts... nothing broken yet The 125 MPH in the 1/8 mile shows promise. as that is nearly 3 mph higher than my previous best 1/8 mile. I can't wait to get these hicups ironed out so I can see what this thing will really run.
OK, gotta throw back on on the street rubber and drive across town for tonights Z club meeting...
Mike
