    Questions about Auto-X

Hey all, I tried searching for these answers not only in the forums but on the vast interwebs as well and I guess I just haven’t seen the answer in plain English. I have a 1971 240 and it needs a lot of work (floor boards, sway bar mount on driver side [the factory mounting spot is...missing] no dash, no seats, basically a body with wheels, engine/driveline, and a lot of rust and bondo ). I would like to auto-x this car occasionally but still maintain “some” aspects of streetability. So, my questions... How strict are the limitations on “non stock” cars? I don’t have a ton of money, but I feel suspension is most important over power, what restrictions or “laws” are out there regarding coilovers and the like? What classes could I run my 240 in being a stripped down shell? As as far as engine, I know the car had triples before it came into my possession, currently has an unidentified header, unsure if they put a different cam in it...what should I expect as far as inspection at the track? With the safety aspect, when are full cages needed, and are roll bars a must for all modified cars? Any other helpful tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  2. Hey Guys, It's almost that time of year once again. Like Brett Favre, I've not retired the car as I said on TV last year. Giving up a Champions Provisional is not something I wanted to do again, plus I have unfinished business at Mid Ohio. Yes, I am eligible to go to this race without qualifying all year. So, what do we do? Test! Anyway, my race is on September 23rd and will be simulcast on Speedcast TV. I will send more links and information later. Any folks up in that area should make an effort to come over, as this venue is one of the best spectator tracks in the country as far as I'm concerned. We begin qualifying on Monday September 19 and we have 4 shots at it. Our qualifying will be the same time every day at 2:40 PM. This is different than it's been in the past where we had different times of day. We've got the car almost ready to go. It's fast! I just have to get my shite together and get it done. The track is very technical and the Miatas will be very hard to beat as usual. Hope to see you there. Greg Ira 2x SCCA National Champion EProduction

S30 semi-racing seats for big butt people

So I'm in the upper midwest and I'm not aware of any places near me that would be a good place to test sit in semi-racing seats (seats that hold you better than stock but are still comfortable and adjustable/recline, etc., and accept harnesses), and I definitely don't want to just buy a bunch and return the uncomfortable ones as shipping costs would be stupid. I'm a big guy with wide hips and shoulders, any recommendations out there for a brands/styles that are better for the bigger people, that are type that described above (semi-racing)? Don't really want to turn this into a "what fits into an S30" post cuz then I'll just get a "use the search button" response, but if you happen to know of some bigger comfier semi-racing seats that just happen to bolt up and fit in an S30, try to draw attention to that note haha. I'm willing to make brackets and etc. Just to give you an idea of size, I have a waist size of 46, and if you've ever sat in a s14, those stock cloth seats hurt my butt cuz the wings are too narrow.

    Racing Harnesses

I'm looking to buy 2 used four point racing harnesses. I don't need them to be FIA certified, and they can be past their expiration year for track racing. I like takatas, racecraft, and schroth in particular, but I'm working on a tight budget so anything will work. Also, I would strongly prefer centerlocking harnesses. Let me know what you've got. Thanks for your time Z community EDIT: I previously stated that I would consider 6 point harnesses or unmatching sets but I decided I'd like to run a matching set of four point harnesses. Email at [email protected] or respond here. Located in San Luis Obispo Area (93410), central California. Could also accept shipments to 94507 (East San Francisco bay area).
  6. Hello Fellow Z folks, Once again we've entered the Orange Crush 240Z in one of the most prestigious races in the US. Luckily for the first time in over 25 years, the race will be held in my home region. I finally have the car prepared and ready to go. Daytona is a different animal altogether which I am sure the others folks will discover in a hurry. We go test on Saturday the 19th for one last time. Qualifying for the event begins on Monday the 21st and runs through Thursday the 24th. The racing begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. There are 24 classes within SCCA and so far there are over 600 cars entered for this event. The best drivers from across the country are invited to compete in this winner take all event. Friday evening is the first ever "spec Miata under the lights" race. That should prove to be very entertaining. The race will be on live feed through SCCA. All qualifying and live timing can be watched or monitored on the "race monitor" app which I highly recommend. Live timing can also be watched on SCCA.com. We are in the Class called EP for those who go to the website and find the schedule. We are paddocked on Lake Loyd in spaces 65-68. WE welcome any of you folks so please come be if you can make it out. My race is on Sunday afternoon, September 27th. Hope to see you at the track! Greg Ira

    Dads old Z

Hey Zers, My Dad passed a little over a year ago and in doing so, told me to take care of his old Z. its an 82 280zx n/a. well,i didn't no to much about cars at the time but i know he said to keep the engine that was in it (didn't have to be stock). so after much reading and tons of "old Mechanic" advice,iv since rebuilt the entire engine. here is what i have done "surprisingly my self" so far.... Head (work done by Rebello) - N42 head, bigger valves, port, polished, some work done to the galleys for coolant and oil. Valve Train - Custom cam 512 Lift, 300 Duration, Stiff springs, new Rocker Arms/Lash pads.new timing sprocket/chain. Block- 0.60 over,JE Flat Top Pistons,Lightened and balanced crankshaft, new Barrings. CR- just at or slightly under 11:1 on 93 Octane, Timing *19 Int and *38 Full at WOT. (No Ping!) 220-240 psi Ignition- Modified Distributor (New Dizzy and Dizzy shaft), Full MSD 6AL-2 Ignition with Blaster-2 Coil Intake- Triple 44 Mikuni Carburetors Exhaust- MSA 3-2-1 Headers into a 2.75 inch,no Cat,Dynojet Ultra flow muffler. Drive Train- Auto to N/A 1983 5 speed,Aluminum flywheel/Drive-shaft, R200 4.11 Differential from 200sx Other- Turbo oil pump, new alternator, new battery,New *Champion 4 core Aluminum Radiator, Tires- Rear : 245-60-14 fronts are 205-60-14 -- Well that's pretty much it.i gutted the dash, all A/C HVAC stuff,no spare tire,12lb race seats,11lb CF hood, Custom Aluminum bumpers (look stock),all digital oil, fuel.air ratio, volts gauges.Steel pillar louvers from 81' ZX as well as the 130mph speedo. I havent had it on a dyno yet for max tuning or ran the track but it takes my buddies mildly modified 86' FoxBody Stang all day until i hit 135-140 mph, then wind resistance goes to s**t..but i can max out my speed around 6,800 in 5th gear,7,000 with some tuning im sure. 0-60 times are crazy,1st hits 38mph like intantly and 2nd hits 58mph not much slower,3rd hits around 80 pretty fast,4th is like my OLD 3rd but tops around 110-115 (speedo isnt to accurate around 100 so) 5th pulls nice all the way to redline. Post comments and let me know what you think. Estamated HP? P.S- Going from my auto gear of 3.54 to the 200sx diffy of 4.11 was an incredibly large difference in acceleration, car sounds like a F*****g Indie car lol! also vary streetable with the big cam and lower geared diff. wasn't to fun on the street with the 3.54 and that cam profile.

  13. We did the 14hr race at Daytona this weekend. We missed the first hour of the race because of a tech inspection/rule snafu. Despite that and a couple of chaotic pit stops we still ended up in 42nd place out of 119 cars that made at least one lap (there were 123 signed up). The car wasn't terribly fast, but it did do a respectable job all things considered. It hasn't really been changed since 1984 except to get new struts and cut springs. Needless to say there is some work to be done, but it looks like a decent platform. Given ideal conditions, we should have been able to finish 25th or better. Given some improvements we have a chance at doing well. Here is a short video of a racing incident at Daytona this past weekend. I'm not sure what happened that caused the other car to turn in. I'm guessing it was because racecar. Other than this it was fairly uneventful. Well the only other event was we didn't check the oil during the second pit stop and it lost pressure and power during the next guy's stint. We had him come in and we had to add 3 quarts. Also, I did manage to drift the entire way around the horseshoe on accident, but I haven't found the video yet (it's hard with ~8hrs of video to look at on my camera).
