74 260Z Wire question turn signal

Recommended Posts

There is a wire that goes from the turn signal (B-black) into the harness from the drivers side to the ceramic resistor block that is attached to the coil in the harness it changes to BL-black with blue stripe.

What does this do?

There is also a black with green strip that I see no notations in the FSM of what it does or goes?

These are in the same bundle that has the blue coil wire and a solid green wire that I know not what to do with.

The '74 circuit diagram shows the BL going straight from the IGN switch to the center lug on the ballast resistor with no other connection whatsoever.  IIRC, the ballast resistor was used originally to help extend the life of points in the distributor.  I come from "points era" automobiles, but I've long forgotten points and carbs - ran away from them actually!  At startup, the ballast resistor is bypassed giving full voltage through the ignition circuit.  When running, the power passes through the ballast resistor. Anyway, that's why the extra wiring.

I don't know why they carried the ballast resistor into the electronic ignition era, but they completely got away from them in 1978, the ZX and beyond.  (The '77 Z still had a ballast resistor, the '78 did not)

The L28ET had none of that - which is why I've long said that you need to ignore (or delete) that portion of the ignition wiring system.  It's "vestigial" wiring, left over from parts you don't need and shouldn't be using...  If the BL is really attached to a B on the turn signal, that's wrong.  Should have gone straight from the IGN switch to the ballast with no other connections.

Thanks CG

I have 2 wires that are black with BW wires that are ign on. The BL, BG do not have power. Would they have gotten power from the ballast resistor. Now I have not cut open that harness there to verify that it turns into a black wire. I am reading the FSM and it traces the BL back to the B on the passenger turn signal. Unless my FSM is wrong,, that never happens HA. Here is the wire schematic.

So I still  don't understand what that does. It goes into the harness from the ballast resistor to the left of the radiator comes out as a solid black wire that goes to the turn signal housing. is it supplying power to something?

Here is a pic of the wires in question. I am using the black w/white tracer as an ignition on for my MS3pro. Leaves me with the 2 black wires with green and blue tracers, the one with green tracer has a jumper wire that is white/black tracer. There is a blue wire there that I think was the tach wire and a green wire. The green I believe is the A/C switched wire. I also have another ignition on black w/white tracer sitting there not being used.

What gives. Issue I am having is i popped the turn signal fuse when I tried the switch. Those are the only thing old that was plugged in before I removed the dash, coil and balast.

I am trying to remove what I don't need.

Ya, I couldn't find the BG (that's obviously there) on the circuit diagram either.  If you look at the legend for the Ignition switch, you'll see that the BL only has power when the switch is in the Start position.  Any other position and it is without voltage.

I completely re-did my harness when I did my swap - almost 5 years ago - and I removed all the wiring that came across the radiator core support and into the vicinity of the coil.  I have no reference left on my car to compare to the wiring on yours unfortunately...  But on the stock 260, there were several components in that area of the engine bay that you won't have/need with a turbo engine that will have "left over" wiring.
