V8 Z Heat/Sound Insulation

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been doing some research but I can't seem to find a moderately priced decent solution to this problem. My exhaust is run down my transmission tunnel. That along with my transmission is making my console area really hot. In addition, the noise inside my cabin is really loud. After about 20 minutes in the car, I get out with my ears ringing.

I've looked at some different solutions. The one I'm leaning toward is a thermal shield to run down the tunnel on the bottom of the car and Second Skin Damplifier Pro in the interior. This is a $300 to $400 solution depending on how much I'm going to need for the interior.

I'd love to hear some other options. What have you guys done?

Thanks

Stephen

Keep searching in the interior forum for material options as there are several threads on this subject.

You do not have to use  high cost materials.

I used a cheap  dynamat type material (adhesive backed) and then  a layer of aluminized mat (roll) followed by a complete carpet kit.

Be sure to cover the wheel and strut housings and the sides where you can reach them.

Everything is glued down to conform with the body.

I glued scraps of the aluminized fiber mat  inside the doors. Do not use the rubberized stick-on mat inside the doors, I tried it and it turned into a blob on the bottom of the door in the summer.

Covering the door panels with foam backed naugahide  improves sound attenuation as well.

My car is cool and quiet.

Mine isn't running yet but used lizard skin. It's light, easy to apply and you can get 100% coverage. Water shouldn't be able to get under it as you paint it on. Can also put many coats and do both sides. When you knock on the panels it's much quieter than before. My friends is running and he has been doing 1 area at a time, just brushing it on, and it gets quieter with each section done. I used fatmat on my last car. It's a cheaper dynamat type of stuff. It weighed a ton, and was hard to cover weird shaped areas. Anything is better than nothing though. Also if you get carpet the mass backing is supposed to make a big difference.

Thanks guys! I looked at a bunch of different products and I just can't seem to get excited about any of it. I looked at lizard skin but I kind of have an extreme case in both sound and heat where I felt it wouldn't be enough on its own. I really wanted something that would reflect and absorb on the bottom side because that console is hot. Im thinking this underneath the car http://store.secondskinaudio.com/1-sheet-of-thermal-block/

I found this stuff tonight for the inside.

http://www.lobucrod.com . I was leaning towards a butyl or rubber based material because I was scared of it holding moisture but at that price I may have to take a shot.

I'm going to POR-15 my floors, then a butyl rubber with aluminum backing (hushmat), then the CSF from lobucrod.  Should really be nice when done.

I ended up getting 25 square feet of the mega mat by fatmat to put into the passenger area and around a fuel cell can that I have. I'm ordering the carpet kit from thezsource unless you guys have something better for that?

Thanks again for the replies
