Aftermarket Seat Harness Hole Dimensions

As we're all too aware, it can be a PITA to find the right seats for these cars - and I aint talking 'bout flat bread!

I've found that one of the most critical dimensions (in my mind) isn't even listed on any seat website.

I've found several seats that fit the car, but when I sat in them my shoulders were to the top of the harness cutout, or above! This is a huge NO-NO as the harness could compress your spine in a wreck.

For me, the corbeau FX-1 pro seats fit my body perfect, but the damn shoulder bolsters are huge! I've seen someone put these in a 240z i believe, but I'll need space around the shoulders for door bars - so I think they're out.

What I need from you:

PLEASE post up your seat, and the distance (In Inches) from the bottom of the harness cutout to the top of the seat at the rear.

This would be a HUGE help!!!!!

FX1 pro will not fit in the s30 (unless with out serious modification) , I bought one and it wasnt even close to fitting, it's a very wide seat.  I also like the seat to be nearly perfectly straight and true and square to the center of the wheel.

This is the only complaint I have with my Bride Exas III.   it's just too short, as it was essentially made for a short japanese man.  The corbeaus are certainly designed for taller/bigger people in general.

Have you considered the Forza sport?  I think it will fit in an s30,  fits about the same size person as a fx1, is cheap, and is FIA approved.

My stuff is trapped in the roll bar shop. Will send you pics and measurements of my seat when I gain access to it. I have mentally designed brackets to drop the seat an inch from where I have it currently. I will also flip the stock Datsun adjuster slide rails up-side-down. That should give me an inch between my helmet and the ceiling-more if I recline a bit more. Will see if the mental design translates into reality. Will require the help of a sheetmetal brake and some tig welding, but should be pretty simple. I will consider the production cost of the brackets for a possible for sale product because the brackets they sell at Kirkey are kind of kookie. Target date for prototype is middle of April. I better be in the staging lanes by May 1st or I'm gonna go nuts!

Here are the two seats I have access to:

  • Corbeau LG1 narrow seats (240Z):  22" from seat surface to bottom of shoulder harness hole.  These seats have a fair amount of padding so that distance will increase when you sit in them.
  • Sabelt Race seats (LeMons/Chump Car):  25" from seat surface to bottom of shoulder harness hole.  This measurement will not change since you are essentially sitting on the fiberglass shell.  It is a true race seat with no padding.  Works great for road course type situations.

I can get the same measurement on Corbeau A4 seats as a friend is using them in his Catterham 7.  Let me know if you desire this measurement.

Also, 1TuffZ has fixed back Corbeau seats in his '73 and is a fairly tall fellow.  Not sure of the model.  Perhaps he can add dimensions to the list.  Additionally he drove my Chump Car so I believe the 25" distance worked for him.  David, any feedback?

I've sat in the Corbeau Clubmans that Dave has. They fit me well, and as i'm coming down to the wire, I might just jump towards them.  For the price, I could run them for just a season or two and get my money's worth!

Adding one to the list.

Corbeau FX1 - ~ 22.5" to bottom of hole.  Unfortunately these seats have a large shoulder bolster, and I don't think I could get a door bar past them.

I bought a single Corbeau clubman, which I'll update this thread with once it arrives.

I got my clubmans last friday. Unfortunately they'll be getting returned.  The seats are too narrow for my shoulders. My back is wide enough that I basically have to sit in front of the seat back or my shoulders are forced forward.

Looking very strongly into Bride VIOS III Low Max seats. I've seen them in a couple Z's, and they seem to fit very well. ... More to come on that.

I believe there's a new function called either google or bing where you can type in a word like say Cobra or ultrashield seats and up pops a website so you can look at these things yourself.

Doubt I'll need to be reminded not to reply to any post or question you might have.

Alright guys, you heard it here first. All Cobra and Ultrashield seats fit Z cars, unless they don't.

Seriously? Check your attitude at the door, e-warrior.

Called ultrashield yesterday because guess what, they DON'T list dimensions on their website.

For the Rally Sport road race seat, they said to add 4.5" to the seat width, and that is the width of the shoulder bolsters for an off-the-shelf seat. Ex: 16" seat will be 20.5" across shoulder bolsters. 17" will be 21.5".

I don't know either of you well enough to hold your hand through the process here but maybe I was a tad off base.

Both Cobra seats shown in the post above have been installed in S30 body Zs (mine included) and the UltraShield sits just fine in my 240 race car.

Click on the Cobra seat link, click again on the dimensional drawing with dimensions shown, get a close estimate of the how high the harness hole(s) are from the bottom of the seat itself.

Better yet call them. Might take more than 60 seconds but what the heck. I purchased the first Cobra seat for my 240 in 1999 after numerous calls to different seat makers and using cardboard cut-outs of the seat backs to determine if they would allow the door to close.

Or maybe just tell us how high (from the bottom of the seat to the top of your shoulder) you need the hole to be and then you might get posts that have information you actually want.

There's a shop about 20 miles from me that has over 2 dozen different seats on display and I'm pretty sure if I was to call them they would be able to tell me which seat had the harness hole opening at the height you needed. Now mind you, that seat might be too wide.

I'd be happy to call them once you provide the distance required and post my findings.

And as to the attitude, that has been part of the package and has gotten me through "the land of many bad things" in '69 to "the sandbox" in '05, so as my Marine buds would say - "drive on",.

Okay, my hand is getting all sweaty.

On the FX1 Pro, the bottom of the harness hole is 24" from the top of the seat cushion.

For reference, I'm 5'10", and with the top of the seat cushion 36" from the roof (no headliner) I have 2.5" from the top of my helmet to the roof.

I felt this was too close, so I dropped the seat down some more.

Few pictures of my 78 with FX1 Pro's installed.

I had to section the tunnel on the DS, and clearance with a BFH on the pass side.

I (heavily) modified some 4th gen F body sliders for the drivers seat, to get some adjustability. I played around with it and mounted it with 15* of layback.

A little cozy, but not terrible.

Passengers seat outer brackets. I used some pre-cut brackets from speedwaymotors.com and trimmed them to fit. PN 917-20381

For these, I plated the floor with 1/8" plate, and thru bolted.

For the inners on the pass side I plated the tunnel and used one speedway bracket (rear) and 2 pieces of 1/8" x 2" angle iron (front)

A little tough to see, but I took my e brake handle off, and trimmed the horizontal portion because it would have worn out the seat.  I also removed the e brake light switch, but have yet to put the cover back over the tunnel hole.

Finished installing.

Here is how much room there is from the shoulder bolster to door cards. Doors don't hit them at all!

I will mention that the seats are basically in line with the subframes I installed, and with the front frame rails. Possibly a little to the interior of the car, but still comfortable to reach the steering wheel.
