Thinking my 3.1L With Webers may need a new home

I'm in the middle of putting my 76 280z together and I am going back and forth on if I want sell my 3.1L L seires and my triple weber 45's and my turbo t5 trans... The motor is in peices currently to have machine work done to the crank (shortened 6mm, polished, balanced, and a heat/ chemical treatment, and the woodruf key slot modifed) the block still needs board out to 89mm  but that will be happening shortly. I do have the z store's discontinued stroker kit (never installed) and three dual barrell weber sidedrafts carbs with manifold and linkage. I have run in to the problem of if I want to run a carb setup or if I want to have this motor in my car being that it is a work of art motor that I am going to do a ton of road trips, track days, and general hard driving. I feel like this motor setup is getting harder to come by and could be better put to use in someone elses baby. I guess Im looking for opinoins? and what I should be looking to sell it for?

Price is function of what is inside and who puts it together. I am not aware of any increased maintenance cost of a stroker over a regular L-series. Why do you think the maintenance would be more? If you are worried about carbs just sell them and switch to EFI.

 

Now if you want to abuse it, go buy two regular L-28s and mildly build them, then swap long blocks when one blows up. Repeat as required.

I am not sure exactly what you are looking for as a answer.

 

So, I have a 3.1 L and love it. Maintenance is no more than any other motor.The L series is one of the original run for ever motors without problems like a modern day Toyota Camry with performance. The carbs are only a problem if not set up properly. The key to setting up multiple carbs is purchasing high quality linkage. This may not come in a kit. The kit I had years ago had cast throttle arms. When you tighten them they would break. You may need to source a set of billet arms to fit your throttle shaft. I have never had a need to readjust the carb as they were set up right the first time.

 

I do not hesitate to take my car anywhere. I do deem it as special and it is not a daily driver but, it has been on all day trips  above 75 mph. with many blasts over 100 mph  and averaged 24 mpg. I have also driven to the race track showed up 95% of all the cars there and driven home. The GT3, Turbo and Z06 were faster when their driver could keep them on the track. My 3.1 L  is more reliable than even many modern cars.

 

I have talked with guys who use to run 3.1 L and now run an RB putting out over 750 hp. I was told they had more fun driving the 3.1 L.

 

The 3.1 L is a great motor although expensive to build. The grind of the cam will dictate the personality but a 3.1 L has torque everywhere in a very linear fashion.

 

I run 10.79 :1 compression ratio and that works fine on 91 octane pump gas at the altitude I live. However, at lower altitudes and high temp result in pinging so keeping the revs up is crucial. Cool air on the coast the car loves.

The engine doesn't seem to be assembled...and with the crank work done there will be a custom flywheel or some clutch fiddling required.

 

This post seems like someone trying to skirt the rules of the for-sale section, more than anything else.

I was realistically looking for advice on up keep with the motor and if it's a high maintenance motor.. and if I were to sell what would it bring price wise since I don't see many for sale.. the crank being shorter is so you no longer have to run a diesel flywheel and can run a normal one

I am in North Eastern California at 4500 ft elevation. Temps range from -20 to 118.

I also run a aluminum 9.5 lb fly wheel. I have no idea why you would de-stroke a stroker crank shaft. Having the extra stroke is the whole reason of having a V07 crank shaft. This is part of the displacement along with 89 mm pistons it takes to get to a 3.1 L. You can have the journals off set and use Honda rods to make a 3.2 L. If you are de-stroking a V07 crank shaft you might as well use a stock 280z crank. I am confused as to why you would be doing what you are doing.

Again, why? It's totally not needed unless you just want to run a custom flywheel...

 

The diesel crank is the same length and mounts up the same as the stock crankshaft, just with a longer stroke.

You have to remove a dowel off the LD cranks flywheel surface to use a L6 flywheel.if I remember correctly. It's been 15 yrs since I built my previous stroked L6....

I really don't see you selling an unassembled motor for 5k out right. That is not far off from buying a ported 3.0 stroker with a good cam right from rebello (which would end up being a much nicer engine built by one of the best), or if someone wanted to cheap out datsunparts even has a stroker with a .490 lift cam built for $3,700 on ebay right now. 

 

Part it out piece by piece. Should be easy enough to price it all out with a bit of research.
