brake upgrade suggestions?

Recommended Posts

looking to upgrade the front breaks on my 240z and can't decide on what to get. The car will mostly be driven on the street with the occasional autocross and canyons. Would stock calipers be enough with some better rotors?

Clean and lube or possibly rebuild your calipers if they need it (easy job)....

But beyond that, why not start with better pads? Maybe you don't actually need an uprade?

my rotors are extremely warped so i need to change those, and my calipers will need to be rebuilt. Is there a cheap replacement caliper that i can buy as a kit? I was thinking about getting these http://www.autoanything.com/brakes/61A2722A0A0.aspx but mine is a 1971 are the strut spindle the same as a 73?

The stock brakes are fine for your intended use. Repair or replace the calipers and rotors as needed with OE grade parts. Use performance oriented pads such as Hawk or Porterfield. if you still have drum brakes in the rear Porterfield has performance brake shoes as well.

Stick with stock till you start racing a lot (like on a track with a certified helmet requirement). Once you leave stock brakes, you quickly get on a slippery slope where none of your wheels fit, so it gets expensive. If you start racing, just get the Arizona Z Car kit and be done with it, but you need to have 16" wheels, unless you get super lucky and you 15" wheels might fit. But 14s are out at that point.

If anything, I would just make sure everything about your current brakes are in tip top shape. Perhaps that means new rotors and pads, new hoses etc. The stock z brakes are actually pretty good. I had the willwood setup on my last z, but that saw some serious lapping.
