The K-stamp cam is one of the smallest cams...for a street car where milage is the ultimate concern, or a mild turbo where again, milage is your goal...it's fantastic. At 16lbs of boost on the stock turbo, it made approx 225HP based on drag times and returned close to 30MPG highway.

That head is not ported, from the photos you showed, and the rest of the visible engine parts appear totally stock.

All in all, you've got plenty of parts to build a running engine, a little attention to details and you'll have a good runner.

Awesome :-). I'm going to put the complete motor in to get on the road, and build the other. Hopefully works out well. I may swap heads because I think I want to build the p79 head or may just try to find another p79 that has never been touched (maybe the best idea) At the very least, I have learned a ton in the last few weeks, and by the time I have this MS figured out I will have learned a ton more. All good stuff, the silver lining of blowing your motor.

  • 2 weeks later...

Braaps recommendations on where to concentrate ones efforts for building more power from their L6 engine in order of priority

1) Exhaust, Ignition, Induction

2) Cam,

3) Light weight flywheel.

4) Head work.

--------------------------------------------

Ok working on Braaps recommendations.

The old blown engine IS down to just the motor mounts and ready to pull. Also orders a few parts.

What I'm thinking is I'm going to run the mystery motor as is for now, and focus on getting all the bolt-ons and the MS squared away. Then I will build a block and head, I'm think the F54 block and the shaved P90 head. I'm going to use the 4speed trans thats in the car now, and rebuild the 5speed and put it in with the next motor.

I have the extra N42 block and head, but after reading so much about the N42 head pinging I would rather just use the P90. I would build the P79 head I have and put the N42 on the F54 now, but I figure the P90 is just the way to go beause of the exhaust ports on the P79.

Parts Ordered/ Some I have:

- Doug Thorley 6/1 Header.

- Abarth new old school full exhaust w/ middlemuffler and endmuffler (I was really excited to get this exhaust, if you have ever heard one, they sound awesome)

- MSD street fire box/ coil/ wires. (maybe not going on untill the MS install)

- Competition Clutch 13lb flywheel.

- 140amp alt and yellow top

Next I'll get the intake/ fuel rail/ injectors squared away.

Then from there I'll start working on this MS.

As far as a cam (Braaps Rec's), that will go on the next motor. This seems like a good solution to me so I can take my time and build the MS and a L28 the right way. It will also be good to have the bolt-ons in place to suport a well built L28 and have some experience with the MS on a stock motor.

I'll try and post some pics soon. I read about the flywheel and I went back and forth on doing it or not. Also thought about the 18lb lighten stock one vs. a 13lb or a 10lb. I decided the 13lb was the best for the range I will be building in.

Thanks again for all the knowledge and experience. I would have made different decisions with out the help and I had never even heard of MS.

Edit: put some pics of the parts, one of the Z as it sits, and one of the motor before much was touched.

Read a good post about choosing a head. Braap says he does like the p79 for an builds. It's still tempting to swap the n42 onto the f54, which will leave me with the p79 to build, but I'm just going to stick to my plan. But it's a good thread, so I thought I would post it. Might help someone else sometime, if they didn't come across it in their own searching already.

Edit:

Some of these parts are rollin in :-)

Also .. Heard people swapping the ford 9 rear axle. So I got a pair on ford super duty 10.5/ front 60 .. Thought I would put theses on next, ...might need a litte fender trim but they should be strong and wide. I attached a pic :-)

The mystery motor is pretty close to going in.

Header and exhaust are in the mail.

I decided to run the stock manifold and injectors for now. I think it will work best if I save the manifold, injectors and stuff all for the new head. That way I can put the new parts in with the right sensors for the MS and just do the Head/Manifold/injectors and fuel/ MS .. All in one swap over.

Here's where I'm at, attached are some pics.

So I pulled the pan on the mystery motor.

The crank says p30. Isn't that a 240 l24 crank?

So this is an 83zx motor. The a cam marked K (maxima maybe or stock ZX) and a 240z crank? I'm confused.

The Pistons are stamped Atusgi, which I think are stock.

I don't know the block code on the Maxima L24's.  Probably the same as the ZX's, it's just a block, bored to size.  L24E with a P79 head?

I don't know L24 cranks either.  Measure the stroke and you'll know more if nobody posts in the mean time.  Measure the bore too.

I'll take a look. It's almost ready to go in so I almost hate to pull it apart too much.

The oil pan is different, however that might just be a N24 vs F54 thing ..idk.

The block is stamped L28. Is the maxima block stamped l28 or l24?

Any recommendations on which oil pan to run.

The black one is the one that was on my old motor. The blue one on the mystery motor. I know the oil pan is a tight squeze.

I guess I'll use the blue one, it a little beat up, but the inside looks fine

Actually, it could be a hybrid engine.  Some people think the L24 crank with L28 bore makes for better high RPM performance.  Back to measuring stroke.  http://www.zcar.com/forum/10-70-83-tech-discussion-forum/41844-long-short-stroke.html  Post #4.

And here.  He's built several. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/39741-new-engine/

I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Im guessing that's what it is. I got a chance to read the treads you posted, I think that's what it is. L24 crank and rods w/ stock l28 pistons. P79 head with a maxima cam. Edited by Project1
