Miles Posted April 23, 2015 Share Posted April 23, 2015 Beware of advertisements for so called rebuilt 240Z/280Z steering racks because the original parts needed for a rebuild have been NLA for years. whatnow123 Posted April 24, 2015 Share Posted April 24, 2015 (edited) Swap in a power steering rack from a Subaru Forrester. Slight modifications are needed to the cross member but it's a quicker ratio and drives way better without it feeling too light. The other benefit is I can park my V8 Z with one finger. I got mine for $99 bucks delivered from Ebay. Total swap cost with all new parts end to end was less than $300. I did find an article here http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/StrRack.htm that seemed to be promising, and for the oil seal I believe I read the 280zx one is still made and is pretty dead on to the 280z one. RebekahsZ Posted April 24, 2015 Share Posted April 24, 2015 There are NO good, reconditioned racks in the US. Just went thru this 6 months ago. As the previous post indicated, "rebuilders" are bead blasting the racks and putting new billows on them. Painting them with silver rattle can paint so they look good on the Internet, then they sell you a rack that is more worn out than the one that you had before. It's a dead-end. The rod may be longer or shorter though. I looked online and found them for $20 a pair. You would have the find an outer tie rod with standard size threads, and you may have to shorten the inner rod, or it may be too short. Once my friend gets around to stripping down his parts car to scrap the body, we were thinking about trying is out.
