So i have been meaning to start a build thread since i bought this car but i got too caught up with working on it. I bought it as a rolling shell back in august and was off to a slow start not knowing what i should do with it.

I started to clean the engine bay because i wanted to drop a motor in and get it driving for spring. I bought a l24 motor/tranny setup and painted the engine bay with satin black paint. I wanted to get things done fast so i bought an under coating spray and did the wheel wells with it to freshen them up.

I dropped that motor in and got it to start and idle so i was happy with that and moved on to the body work.

The body on the car was really rough and looked as if someone covered it in bondo and painted it without sanding in some spots. I wanted to know what i was really dealing with so i decided to take it down to the metal.. after about 60 hours of grinding bondo off the car i could see what i had to work with.

Since im in college, i figured that id pay someone to do the bodywork. I had someone working on the car for about 4 weeks and not a lot of work was being done on the car and i was extremely unhappy with the way he was doing his metal work. I ended up telling him im going to go a different way with the body and started to do some research on how to do body work the proper way. here are some pics of the bodyman's patches.

I looked at the pics first and read the post after... got a little scared when I saw those pics. Glad you're going to have them redone. Was there anything actually wrong with the roof joint there? There's a leaded joint there. It has been known to rust out, but not often, kinda wondering if your "bodyman" thought the factory joint needed replacing.

Anyway, welcome to the forum! Looking forward to the build, although I hope in the future the pics will all be the right way up. Got a little dizzy going through that set lol.

Yes he was trying to cover some small holes on the roof joint. With all of his patches he hammered around where he was welding on the body "to make the metal sit more flush". There are some more patches that i cant seem to find pictures of right now.

Thanks! I'm not sure why the pics are rotating, they are showing up straight on my computer.

After I let the body man go, i  got access to a rotisserie and this is were everything took a turn.

A previous owner had tried to replace the passenger floor pan with thick sheet metal, roof tar, and self tapping screws. The frame that he replaced didnt seem to surprise me either. It was 2 pieces of 1/4" thick angle iron and bolted through out the floor pan as it exceeded. Seeing this, i decided to replace the frame on both sides, add frame connectors, and tie it into the rockers.

Once the metal work was done, i was back at it with the wire wheel, cleaning all the undercoat off of the car. I dont have any pics of it stripped underneath but here is a pic of the finished product underneath. We got bored one night and thought it would be a good idea to bondo the welds on the floor pan and what a difference that made!

Before we took the car off of the rotisserie, i decided that it would be easier to install the suspension while it was still slightley turned.

  • 9 months later...

Hey Guys, so here is an update how this builds going.. I noticed some very minor scoring when i pulled the head off the RB so i decided to tear it apart to see what was wrong. The first piston started to pre detonate so we did a hone, and then went on the hunt for an oem piston and ring set. Here are some pics of the reassembly

After i got it all back together i dropped it in and decided that i wanted to go with a front facing intake. Most builds ive seen people went to the short stubby runners and from what i read that takes away some torque. I ordered the cheap bolt on intake from ebay and when it got here i realized why everyone went the other way. After a few cuts and a trip to the fab shop it fits like a glove.

Here are some pics of how the intake came out.. I'll take some more pics of the bay when my couplers come in for the IC piping.

I got a new driveshaft made up

I made my own motor and tranny mounts for this because i wanted to get the motor lower and a little further back. compared to slotting the stock ones.

I ordered megasquirt so once that gets here i am going to wire it up and see if she starts!
