+0.020 Pistons for endurance racer

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am building a mild endurance race engine, 4000-6000 RPM will be the working point. It will see 8hours of nonstop 100% racing. Horsepower will be 180-200 but it will see a lot of abuse.

Flat tops in F54 block is the plan with either N47 or shaved P79. Shadbolt M455 cam, megasquirt.

Machine shop said I needed +20 extra for pistons and rings.  The only pistons I could find in +0.02  is the ITM  (RY6134-020).

Are these good enough? Or should I overbore and get ROSS Forged or something else?

Thanks

Turbo or Normally aspirated? Either way those pistons should be fine at that power level. Have your machinist check the Big end sizing and re-size if necessary. Install new ARP rod bolts and that engine should last forever.

Having the engine properly balanced will go a long way in ensuring it's durability in Enduro's.  Secondary vibrations can get very strong with Inline 6's. Using  a good aftermarket vibration dampner will help with reducing any unwanted Vibrations. .

I would at least get the stock damper elastomer replaced.  You don't want the 40 year old elastomer separating from the outer ring. There's a company in the USA that rebuilds them. Can't remember the guys name at the moment.  I used to use a Tilton damper.

Power Force makes an SFI rated damper ( MSA ) . BHJ ( $$$ ) and ATI also carry them for L-6. Don't buy an aluminium hub model. Make sure you get the proper bolt with an aftermarket unit. Some times the hub is thicker than stock.

The power force seems to be reasonable in price and people on this forum seems to have success with them.

Can I used slap them on? Or is there balancing involved?

Hopefully I can reuse my current Hal sensor bracket and put a trigger wheel behind it.
