HybridZ may be shutting down.

Recommended Posts

I just got on to the Donation page, (hidden under the More drop-down and invisible unless you know where to look), and clicked the Donate Now button, and got an error message.  Maybe $5 is too small, or maybe it's something else.  But I got blocked, with no explanation.  I was not allowed to Donate.

Having just done this, I found it to be very easy. Donate button right at the top of every page in the forum navigation bar, between Feedback and Timeslips. Put $20 in the box, hit donate, it connects you with Paypal, and you're done in a couple clicks. You're right though, $5 is not enough, and it doesn't make it clear that there is a minimum, or what it is. I believe the minimum is $20. That should be more clear. I don't see the 'More' drop down menu. Are you using a mobile version of the site?

Nearly everyone has Paypal or similar these days. I don't see the point in having another option outside of other newer payment services. It's a bit like putting "no 56k" in the thread titles. Maybe there's someone out there who still has 56k, but high speed internet is the standard now.

No, I'm using Chrome on Wndows 7 on a full-size computer..  Might be a Chrome thing.  Donate is between Feedback and Timeslips, but it's in the More drop-down.

One key to success is removing obstacles.  If SuperDan wants to leave the PayPal obstacle there, that's his prerogative.

Beside that, there's no "similar" as an option.  Just PayPal.  No PayPal, no option for giving.

RE: Ads

Perhaps I'm in the minority on this matter, but I adblock whitelisted this site (to allow ads to display) years ago. The ads displayed are unobtrusive and minimal - a few banners, no more.

I get that some sites are overladen with ads and it's overwhelming and obnoxious, hiding content and worse. Hybridz isn't one of those sites.

I'm not sure that yearly fund drives will prove sustainable, so it's a small price to pay to ensure the site stays up in my opinion. That's said, having a paid membership level that opts out of ads? Great idea!

I've never understood why certain ads show on my pages anyway.  Right now I'm looking at a "Green Jug" ad for some kind of plant fertilizer, and a mystery "Download Now" ad that only a fool would click on.

Paypal is the most popular service as far as I'm aware. Although you say it's an obstacle, I'm not sure how it could possibly be easier. Yes, if you don't have Paypal you can't pay, but how many people don't have Paypal? Very few - maybe a few more than those who still don't have high speed internet. Since I already have Paypal set up, after putting in the donation amount, I had to click maybe 5 times, and it was all done. It was very, very easy. Maybe the updated forum software could streamline it further and offer more options.

No offense, but it is somewhat ironic for a Hybridz member - Hybridz being an "avoid the herd", be unique, kind of site - advocating for herd-like behavior.

PayPal is not the best payment option.  There is no best.  Anyway, the point has been made and beaten.  SuperDan has control.

Seriously though, no offense intended.  Too many eggs in one basket can lead to problems like Photobucket.  If PayPal goes under, no revenue until an option is worked up.  I was hoping for a P.O. Box I could send cash to, back when I first tried to donate.

Kind of funny.  I just donated, via PayPal, and there's a credit card donation option on the payment page.  So although it says PayPal only, apparently credit cards are accepted also.

Many people come on to the site that are new to the internet.  They come here to learn about their new hobby,  They're grateful and would love to contribute.  Make it clear and easy.  That's all I'm suggesting.  Despite what Apple and Microsoft and Google would have people believe, there are still many many people who have resisted.  Make it less painful for them to submit.

I agree with the hard to find donation link, I admit I didn't invest a lot of time looking initially, but it still took me a while to find it under the "more" drop down option.

This is the only z site I frequent due to the specific and technical topics. I don't mind an odd ok topic discussion every now and then but the direct nature of the threads here with out all the clutter, porn, etc... is much appreciated.

I will be donating in the next day or so (funds are a bit tight at the moment).

I couldn't imagine the Z community or even the internet without HybridZ. I may not post much anymore but I do lurk daily and I do get inspiration from topics new and old on this forum. It would be a crime to have to take the site down with all of the information it contains.

$100 sent and adblocker disabled for this site.

My Z project would've been DoA without the wealth of knowledge here and the support of the broader, amazing HybridZ community. I can't imagine all of it going up in smoke, particularly when the site's so close to turning legal drinking age!

Well, ok then :)

So, looks like we are in the black for a while now.

So I pledge to you fine folks:

Procure our new server today and update all or software licences.

Then I will start moving our site to it's new home, hopefully next week.

After the dust settles (a week or 2 later) I will upgrade the forum software to the new (supported) version. That will take care of the bugs we have now days like the donation email spamming.

This was quite uplifting for me to be honest, I really did think there was a lack of interest now days in HybridZ  but you guys definitely showed me the light!

Thank you for your support,

dan

50 dollars sent!

This site has changed how I am as a car enthusiast, and is an extremely valuable resource for doing everything we do.

Keeping it running is extremely important.

Let us know if something else needs to be done.

I think the revenue progress bar is a great idea. It's easy to take sites like this for granted when we aren't ever confronted with them going away. Getting halfway through the year and seeing the progress bar at 25% is a good reminder that things can go away.

Dan

Tried to donate, but the donation page is problematic:

  • The only payment choice is Paypal (don't use it - bad experience)
  • Clicked on Paypal anyway which took me to a credit card input form
  • Input information requested on credit card form, but it was rejected by the input form because  my city and state were invalid.
  • Re-input multiple times, but got the same "city not valid" message.

PM me a payee name and address and I will be happy to send a check for $100 to help keep HybridZ going.

In the future, why not have donation drives twice a year.

Edit: successfully donated $100 on the donation page.
