WTB: Good 280Z within a day's drive of Southern California

Hi all.  I posted a want ad a while back on the ZCars forum and the Classic Z Car forum, and I thought I'd post it here as well.

 

I'm a recently retired guy and former 2-time 280Z owner that's looking to buy a driveable, light to moderate project car.  The car I end up buying won't be a show car, or a car only taken out to go to Cars & Coffee.  Instead, it'll just be a nice (non-commuting) driver for me to tinker on and enjoy every day.  I don't want to stray too far from stock.  Probably moderate suspension upgrades, wheels & tires to taste, perhaps 240Z bumpers, and some modern electrical enhancements (LED lighting, USB ports, etc.).  I live in Southern California, so emissions is an issue.  I believe 1975s will, at the time of titling, need to have their emissions components in place even though the cars are smog exempt.  The 1976s - 1978s will need to pass California smog tests (visual and emissions).  I think there might possibly be a problem with a current CA resident buying and bringing a 49-state model into CA.  If so, I'd like a CA model.  Some of you guys might know the rules better, so my lengthy preamble here may be off-base.  So, here's what I'm looking for...

 

Requirements:

- Clean title, without any branding (salvage, rebuilt, etc.)
- 2-seater coupe
- Manual transmission, unless the price for an automatic trans car is low enough to make doing an auto-to-manual swap a viable option
- L28 with fuel injection intact
- A/C system intact (whether or not it’s working)
- No sunroof/moonroof
- Capable of making a road trip home to southern CA

- Must be able to pass CA emissions (as is, or with little effort to make the car pass)

Preferences:

- I'd really like a 1975 for the smog exemption, but I'll definitely consider a 1976-78 model
- Not much rust, or body filler
- I'm open to doing an interior renovation, if necessary
- Fairly stock car
- Exterior colors: Blues, greens, white, silver, yellow, orange, red, or dark purple metallic preferred.  I'm not a big fan of black, browns (I've previously owned two brown 280Zs), burgundy, beige, or gold (unless it's safari gold).  Color changes are OK if they are complete changes, or if the price allows for completing the change.  If the paint is dead and the price reflects that, it's something that also might work for me.

Ball park price range - $7k to $15k, depending on the car's condition.  There's always wiggle room up/down on price, but I'm not looking to buy a Hagerty #1 car.
