dmanzo57 Posted February 11, 2004 Share Posted February 11, 2004 I just installed a set of KVR Performance carbon-fiber brake pads and they squeal really bad when slowly stopping from about 10 MPH. Seems to be worse when they are cold. I sprayed the backs of the pads with that sticky blue stuff before installing. I had the same problem with a set of Hawk HP Plus pads. I switched back to OEM pads and they are nice and quiet. Is this normal for carbon-fiber pads? Is there anything I can do to get rid of the squeal? JMortensen Posted February 11, 2004 Share Posted February 11, 2004 Clean that sticky blue crap off and put some synthetic brake grease on the back of the pads and the shims. While you have the pads out use an old toothbrush and clean all of the dust out. Also put a little bit on the end of the back of the pad where it rides on the caliper. That's what we did at the Volvo dealership I worked for, and Volvos have the most notoriously squeaky brakes ever. Worked for my Porterfield R4's, too and they're a squeaky pad. They weren't nearly as bad as the Hawk pads to start with. I've got a set of Hawk pads on a '92 Olds and they work great and don't sqeal a bit. JMortensen Posted February 12, 2004 Share Posted February 12, 2004 For Volvos you really should run factory pads and rotors too, unfortunately. And don't ever turn a Volvo rotor. Basically you'll get 2 sets of pads on a rotor, then you just throw them away and replace. The rotors are very soft and they will be really wavy after the 1st set of pads, but you can usually get a 2nd set of pads on there before you trash them. Volvo's parts dept has a special synthetic grease that's about $25 a tube, and the tube probably holds 1/2 your average toothpaste tube capacity, but I've had good luck with the Sta-Lube synthetic brake grease too. I have stock pads on mine, nothing special, but under 10mph, they shreik like a banshee, and its really starting to bug me. I don't know if its entirely brake dust problems though, because i also get a squeak at high speeds when i turn in one direction, what do you guys think? Time for new pads and shoes? haukenes Posted July 10, 2006 Share Posted July 10, 2006 Yeah, i have. i replaced all four of my struts two weeks ago, and the rotors and braked appeared alright (i'm not a brake expert by any stretch of the mind) but nothing striking stood out about them. The squeak i'm really worried about is the high speed squeal as my Z bears towards the passenger side. (not when it turns, but gentler corrections, like lane changes and such).
