Yes, that's very similar to the Shelby Series 1 hood I want to do. The GT40esque hood is very cool and Terry has one of the best.

 

Yours looks pretty good too. Did you use mostly MDF or foam for the design. It almost looks like *gasp* wood!?! :confused:

I used a closed cell foam from Michigan Composites. It isn't affected by the resin or other chemicals. I used two different thicknesses 1/4" and 3/8". The 1/4" is easily shaped into curves, and the laminated 3/8" gives good stiffness. The foam is yellowish in color.

 

Yes, I did the SubtleZ rear flares as well.

Looks great. I cannot wait to see it painted as well. Reading all of the airflow comments and information makes me wonder how this kind of set-up would fare aerodynamically. From what I've read, sealing the front is the primary task and it looks like this is being done.

Terry probably wont be too upset. He may have gotten the idea from another car.;)

 

One piece of advice: If those headlight buckets are stock FRP you may have some issues. I did the same thing and the seem at the fender keeps showing through the paint. It's been fixed three times now and it keeps coming back.

 

Everything was done right. The only thing we can think of as to why it keeps coming back is the material differance between the two parts.

 

This next time I'm using Reaction Research fiberglass headlight buckets as well as John's fenders.

 

And buddy, line up your DZUS fittings!

I will line up the dzus fasteners when I finally secure them to the hood. Yes, those are factory FRP buckets. They are secured to the SubtleZ fenders using epoxy resin w/chopped glass filler (West Systems 406), the factory fasteners, the inner sides have been filleted to the fender using the same resin / glass mixtures, the seam was then ground down and refilled with epoxy/ glass, and finally the seam was covered with epoxy/ S-glass cloth. If it shows after the paint job I will be rather upset, but it would be a lot of work to change then now.

Just a quick observation, wont those 2 vents on the sides draw IN air rather than let air out? due to the low pressure area under the hold (similar to the cabin fan inlet infront of the bonnet) or was this the plan for it?

I am not 100% certain which way air will flow through those vents. They are a little forward of the cowl and outboard of the centerline of the car. They may or may not be in the high pressure area of the windshield base. Somone should do some wind tunnel work to find out. My main concern was to control the air coming through the front of the car.

 

The hood that I started with (SubtleZ Cowl) had two holes like the later 280Z. I could have just filled them in, but I decided that additional vent paths for heat might be a good thing. So, I acquired the two small vent covers from Reaction Research and blended them in.

Dan, I need to get over there and admire that fiberglass art, and maybe shamelessly cop some ideas for myself.

 

I too have those Reaction research side vents and am contemplating closing the rear and opening up the sides to ensure that air does flow out.

 

Maybe Dan Juday can comment on the cooling performance of these vents as- is?

 

I can tell you that the big rear opening in the cowl hoods (without being ducted to a sealed carb airbox) do indeed hurt cooling, and, as we now know, also affect aerodynamics in a bad way. I will soon be back into the itchy/smelly stuff to correct this.

I found on mine, using the yarn tufts, that the reverse flow and presssure does not move this far forward. Also, on the sides of the windshield, the air began to move toward a horizontal flow which differentiated from the flow in the middle of the hood
