Mike Kelly's Zcar Project

Managed to get one of the axles swapped over to the 15 5/8th centers instead of the 16 1/4 units. This helps me fit wider tires, adjust more suspension parts (I have three adjustment points) and just works better for my setup. I still need to work out returning these to MOOREParts...

Got a cool shift knob and installed.  PIcs on FB.  Also managed to address a couple of other small issues... Getting close.  Meeting with Matt SHue next week to go over a good base file for the car.

You don't want to use the shop I went with.  They lost my parts, my order, and my number... Had to go into the  place and sort it all out... Then they didn't cut me any break or apologize for the mess... It's called drivelinespecialist.com/

I had good luck with The Driveshaft Shop. But, you kinda need to know what you want. The tech guy on the phone sounds like he's in high school-first day on the job. He didnt seem more confidence inspiring as time went on. And it took a while. But it is a nice piece built to the specs we agreed upon. You need to know which flange you need to couple to the diff. For me, they sent me two options for a diff flange and I chose between the two. The rear u-joint to mate to a R200 is limited to a 1310. Plan to repaint-none of these shops seem overly concerned with finish.

My local driveshaft shop has a monopoly and is terrible. I might take him a shaft for a tractor, but that's even a stretch. When the local guys provide such a crap service I have no bones about going around them. Sorry about your setback. I'm still fighting my tow vehicle as the Z sits in the corner looking sad and dejected.

This thread wont see many updates until I sort out the problems I have experienced with a broken block. The rear sides of the block are cracked and the passenger side is much worse than the drivers side. So my new motor is going to need a repair or a new foundation. Yes, I am sick over this. Yes I did this. No I dont need anyone telling me how much I suck right now.

Motor was drained of water back in October, when I posted on FB reminding people to remove it and NO coolant or water was put back into the block.  Unless there was some trapped in a passage, I don't think that water was the issue.  Plus I keep an electric heater in the shop and that shop doesn't get below 35 degrees.

Today I backed this thread up to my hard drive.  I'm not "taking my lack of talents" to south beach.  But I am taking a break from HZ.  Those of you who want to continue following me and the progress or regress of this project, Please see my Mike's Hobby Shop link to FB or follow me on FB. 

 

I'm not "leaving" HZ.  But I am going to stop posting other than forsale for a while.  This site has taken a big chunk of the last 17 years, some good, a lot not so good.  Reading thru this thread reminded me of the many good things unrelated to Zcars that I have experienced in the last 17 years.  Sadly, for me, wrenching on this car has been more than driving it.  Clearly due to my own problems working on it (as another member is so quick to point out.)  So maybe I need to share less, and read more.  Clearly putting myself out here has made me a target.  It's my own fault.  I guess I learn slow... but eventually, well...

I haven't been much of a contributing member but i get on and read/research and learn everyday. whenever your thread is updated on the "view new content" link it's always the 1st one i read. Your attention to detail and in-depth write-ups are why this is one of the few forums i get on.

 

I understand needing to take a break. I know you haven't had the best luck with engines, but you and members like you are the reason this 25 year old bought his '72 240z against his dads advice (bought as a project, not a daily). When you guys share your builds, tips and tricks and actually finish them, it gives me the confidence that i can do the same and ask questions if they come up. I've learned more from this website about Zcars than i have from any other. so much  that i had the P.O. in disbelief (he owned the car for 15yrs and said i knew more than he did).

 

Take a break, enjoy your time away, but know there are many members that look up to you guys and can't wait for you to take another crack at getting this car on the track.

 

Thank you for the amount of effort and determination (even though its being tested right now) and hopefully myself and others can carry the torch until you return.

Mike your thread and Matt's thread are the two threads I look for whenever i log onto HZ. While Matt has full backing of a race shop you are the average guy trying to achieve above average results. That goes a long way in my book, you are doing it yourself, built not bought. I think the HZ community as a whole would feel a void if you are gone. I'm positive lots of people have benefited from your thread I know I have and I thank you for that and I'll respect any decision you make.
