I am parting a '79 that I bought primarily for the engine. From what I have read, the diff ratio is the same as my '73. Too high for me, but I thought some of you V-8 or turbo people migh be interested. I would like to trade it for a 3.7 or higher R200. I will have to double check on the milage but I was told that the car has been parked for some time.

I know this belongs in "buy, sell and trade" but I thought it might get more attention here.

Well, according to this info that I found on zhome.com, I was wring about the rear diff. Sorry GNZ, I wasn't trying to pull wool just misinformed. It seems that the only ways that this car has an r200 is if it is a 2+2 or it is a GL.

I can say with absolute certainty that it is not a 2+2, but how do I know if it is a GL. It has A/C, cruise but no t-tops or leather. If it is a GL, then it has the ratio that I want anyway. If not then all that I have is half-shafts, bummer.

The same site stated this:

1977 through 1983 Factory Four/Five Speed Transmission Ratios Note: Ratios in 4spd.'s are the same as 5spd.'s For 1st-4th gears.

77-79 1980 81-83 B-W t5

1 3.321 3.062 3.062 3.500

2 2.077 1.858 1.858 2.144

3 1.308 1.308 1.308 1.375

4 1.000 1.000 1.000 1.000

5 0.864 0.773 0.745 0.780

Does this mean that the 79 Gl had both the high ratio trans and somewhat high rear? Never would have guessed that.

Anyway, sorry about the post.

As far as i know the gl's had power windows and doorlocks and the standard(doesn't refer to tranny)model had manual windows and doorlocks as well as manual steering, and some had 4 speeds instead of 5.

I don't think the standard(as opposed to gl) models ever had cruise either, but i could be wrong.

So if you have power windows, locks, and steering, i'd say you definitely have a gl. otherwise, i guess you have a "standard" model.

Someone please correct me if i am wrong.

Exactly Zmaize,

That is at least what "Road and Track" had to say. This means that I already have a 3.7:1 and therefore a trade is no longer needed. I guess I need to check my sources a little more.

Later,

I am now certain that the diff is non-stock. Also that it is an R200@3.54:1. If anyone has a 3.7 or higher(numerically), I would like to trade. Or I will sell this one for $125.
