LS1 or LT1

Recommended Posts

I will be starting on my 73 swap soon and have planned on an LS1 from the beginning, but now I have a dilemma. My good friends wife has decided one of his projects must go. So he offered me his 97 LT1 6 speed Firebird that he just had the engine built in by a very reputable shop for 2900! He has that much in the engine alone. So what say you take this deal or get the LS1?

I have a 280Z with a newly built LT1. I love the car but if I were going to start all over now I would go for the LS1. When I built my car two years ago the LS1 was twice the price of the LT1, that's not true anymore. The LS1 is just a better engine, lighter being all aluminum, more HP and a much more sophisticated ignition system that does not use the dreaded optispark. $2900 is a good deal if it includes the whole car. You could sell what you don't use and get a lot of that $2900 back.

I had the same opportunity. My brother's girlfriend had a 96 trans am with a 6 speed that I could have had for cheap. I decided to be patient and pass on it, because I knew what I really wanted was the LS1. If you are building the car you really want, I would encourage you to be patient and stick with what it is you really want. You will be much happier in the end in my opinion.
