August 2006 Bought the car (it was in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada). December 2006 Bring the car at home and store it (A trip of 2400Km): August 2009 Installation of the car for a long period… And began to take off some parts and to scrape. So I fond a better one. but I have a lot of work before it becomes beautiful! Believe me, I was pretty discouraged before starting… Anyway, he need a dash and I don’t find better. Dismantling: I worked several hours without stopping. Brushing, washing, delist and remove a ton of " caterpillar cocoon" ... Yack! Finally and surprisingly, I reached some things not so bad It still to remove rust on the frame. I took the frame from Texas dasboard, because it was less rusty. Again, after hours, I reached some things not so bad! I cleaned and restore the gauges, wiring and other parts that constituted the dash. Exemple of parts: Before: After: The dashboard look better now: For the fun and see what happens, I turned on the gauges lights: Better with no light around: Cool, no? Now short story: Before After, front: After backside: And finally, packing for storage: I am very happy with my job... Next... If you could, explain more in detail your methods to restore the parts. Ok, I'll try to give more explanation. It is not easy for me to write in english... I hope don't make too much mistake... For restoring parts I use many product: Which product? It must try and try... For surface rust, I found a product called "Gotar". Unfortunately I lost the original container ... So I have no more details yet. This product is wonderful... To polish the metal I use my drill with a metal wheel for start; and I use a wheel of cotton with compound for the finish. Here is my most user tools: Yes, yes, I use it for clean all my dashboard... For the finish of my dashboard I used this shoe polish: But for to have a good result, I brush it long long time. If you brush long time, the polish go inside the material and the surface is no longer fat. No black stuff when you pass your fingers. For can polish, I modified a shoe brush for to fit on my drill: I used the same way to renew my black panel into the car. Again, the result was awesome! These are my basic tips ... Jack_280Z Posted December 24, 2010 Author Share Posted December 24, 2010 For finish the winter 2009, I cleaned and rebuilted the "controls" around the steering wheel: All switches have been totally disassembled for rebuilt the contact (clean copper). After all test, all switches worked perfectly as new. With few bleach, I succeeded to blanch the old lettering. They are going to look as new! I begin to have haste to install all that! I bought an other 1976 "Z". He need than I specify: When I bought the Texas body, it come just the shell and the dashboard. Nothing more! No engine, no light, no glass, no seat... Nothing! So, you understand now why I bought another "Z". In fact, my 1978 "Z" was purchased in order to redo my "Texas ". But he was too good to demolish it. That is why I have two projects... Finally, with this new acquisition, I will take all the parts than he need for to finish my Texas body. As the body of my new acquisition is in poor condition, maybe I will make an other project: rat-race!!!! Return to my Texas body, The first part than I took on this "new acquisition" is the bracket for the inner shift boot: As I don't find this part, I decided to clean this old parts: Here, after many hour: Next, paint it! I cleaned and began to rebuilt my center console. It is one than I found in poor condition. Before and after: This side is not the best; The other side is perfect. I did not succeed to completely hide the plastic bleached by the sun. Anyway, this is the "helper" side and inside the car it should not seem too. For your refresh of the center console did you simply clean it or use a vinyl dye paint? I prefer to use a paint and do the entire interior so that I know it will all match after possible sun damage. I cleaned the console with a standard cleaner and a toothbrush... After, I used a shoe polish and I polished with a modified shoe brush drived with my drill.
