79 ZXR 406 v8 build

I figured let show some progress over the winter for my car The ZXR it has tons of goodies actually.

I have two ZX’s a s130 that I’m converting to a full track car by fIA Standards with the ISMA wide body kit ect

http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/82085-78-280zx-v8-305-sbc-racetrack-toy/page__p__919858__hl__%2B406+%2Bsbc__fromsearch__1#entry919858

But I have come to path that I’m not changing much to the cars any more

The ZXR works great with the V8 and the 5 lugs, it has 88 front turbo hubs with z32tt disks and R33 alu calipers, steel brake lines, It has coilovers on all corners vented disk in the rear ect etc .. actually the whole nine yards.

There are still improvements to made as im looking to modify my front A arms a bit more to become adjustable with heim joints and do the same to the rears. I have the same sets to make for my track car so I might aswel do this to both cars.

This winter i decided it has been time to do something about the engine bay and paint it satin black with two component sigma coating ( rust proofing my Socal car for European environmental influences) Ill let the pictures do the talking.

This car is full caged street warrior Time attack tool

Starting the build up again!

I’m going to flock my dashboard and run my ETB dash, next to that changes in the rules in my Time attack class forced me to take a drill and .. ;) see pictures attached.

Flocking my dash and headliner will make the interior allot cleaner in my book, i have to say im really happy with the 're''build sofar.

I decided to keep my heating so im running new hoses. To bad installing all these makes it look ‘cluttered' again but I’m fairly sure once all is in place it will look allot cleaner;

Specs sofar

-Full Cage.

-5 lug swap. ( z31 turbo)

-Spax coil overs (s13)

-poly bushing.

-MSA sway bars.

-Adjustable end links.

-Z32 tt Brake disk and R33 skyline calipers, EBC Blue stuff pads, Motul brake oil, steel lines.

-406 SBC v8, King deamon 950 carb 12:1 compressie 533,4 HP.

-T5 gearbox with tilton 3 plate clutch and hurst shifter.

-3.36 OBX hlsd with z31 turbo axles.

-Diff cooler.

-AFCO Aluminum radiator.

-2x 2,5 Stainles pipes into 3,5" straigt and dynomax muffler.

-Sparco Seat and crow 5 point harness.

-Hydrolic E brake

-ETB digi dash

So Another saturday of tolling has passed, and i made some great progres! the engine is back in, i heat shielded the wire loom with a sleeve and did some other small stuff..

anyhow here are the pictures:

Im still not to happy with the water hoses... im looking for a silicone solution to the 'problem', not only does it look 'cheapish'it also has proven to be a point of failure in the previous set up ( blowing the hoses off) This could be solved by welding a bead to the end.. but .. well it is not like i want it. (haha i can ramble allot about a hose)

Next things left to do are:

- flock the dash and strip it

- Make swirl pot and fuel filter in the rear

- Get a bunch of steel braided hose and AN couplers

And probably some more loos ends

Yesterday i figured lets build instead of buy!

And i fabricated a swirl pot from Stainles! Pressure tetsted it so im happy, not i have to build it into the car where the spare used to go, i also have my diff pump and fuel filter there

Another update, i made test setting for the swirl pot next to the pot i have to mount the low pressure pump and filters, on the underside i mounted the diff cooling pump..

Also i mounted a new tow hook as i mounted it upfront but never got arround doing the back during the time attack season.. this year it is time do it right!

Thanks your not a bad example yourself for that matter.

Im still thinking of some kind of vette IRS with a tremec gearbox in the back down the line! But first things first en get some durability in this car.. (ione has to keep dreaming right!)

Anyhow here is update to make the hood shut ;)

It is the bulge from a beta motorsport 4"cowl hood, funny enough the s30 has the same radius as a s130.

The vents had to be welded shut and i will rivet the bulge top the hood, it give s a nice racy feel to it! And it makes me able to leave the bulge CF.

I have to admit it was one of the things i kept doubting until i started welding, but well Function over form i guess. the other option was doing something with carp spacer but that still would make things tight, and would alter the engines tuning.

I will try to seal the underhood area from the cowl, so i really will have a cowl induction system!

Another update

I shaved the scoop and after the pictures i smoothend out the welds with some bondo, so now all is left to do is paint, and then on the fun stuff!

So im allmost done with 'cosmetics' and my air cleaner finally fits!

Note that even with a 'drop base' aircleaner i still have only about 1" room between the top of the 4" cowl and the filter upfront  So an s130 has allot lower hoodline compared to an s30

I recently pulled the motor that came in my S30. The PO had put 350zz valve covers on but after I ran the casting numbers, it turns out that it's a 400 SBC. Did you build your 406? I'd like to start reading and studying up on SBC building but there seems to be so much out there...it's a bit overwhelming. Got any tips?

Anyhow this april i'll be at the MSA meet :) and since california is the land of milk and honey when it comes to V8's i hope to buy some new parts ( flywheel clutch combo, some plug wires and small bits and pieces. Nothing major, then it should be ready for the road agian!

An update picture! The M3 GTR is more or less finished (always in season improvements). And when nothing blows up, and i dont wreck that frees up time for the ZXR.

http://http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/111814-sorry-guys-i-got-busy-on-the-darkside/

So i dusted it off and put it back in spot in the barn i can actually work on her! As this is the nearest next project to driving this wil be the the one ill adress my attention to next.

What are the plans:

-Repace all the lines with Goodridge AN lines (fuel and oil) as the whole little oil fire set me thinking

-Get the clutch working, It has a tilton 5,25 in there now, but it is a bit to light for street use, so what kind of flywheel cluctch set up do you guys suggest? It has a t5 under the car ( i know it is to weak for the power it puts down but for now im fine with that)

-Replace plug wires as the went up in flames.

-Rewire the car, as all the wires that are in are stock but the front loom has allot of stuff that the car doesnt need anymore.

-New front tires.

-Rivet the hoodscoop in place for the final time.

-Mount the OEM fender mirrors!

Get it roadinspected so i can drive it on the Dutch roads!

The pictures:

In the near future I'm planning on repainting it, I did this paintjob when i was still merly out of my study budget.. so it has flaws.. I'm going for withe and black, howbver i first want to be finished with all the tech work before i do that, as i will have to completly strip her down agian.

If i would do it over i would have gone LS... But im tempted to new projects to fast. So i wil have to stick with what i have first and first blow this engine up!  As LS gives easy gearbox combos that work!  The SBC and gearboxes seem to be a hard ( at least manual ones that hold up any decent power)

so the qeustions:

What flywheel clutch combo do you suggest that can withstand 400 + ft pounds pf tq?

Ok i did some research. Please correct me if i'm wrong!  I'm going to buy a LT! 6 speed car ( 95 trans am, camaro or firebird), harvest the gearbox and scrap the chassis.

The LT1 6 speed botls to the sbc but since i have 2pc rear main seal 400 i will need a Mcleod or Centerforce conversion flywheel, they run about $400 but i will need some sort of adaptor anyway and i dont have clutch now ( i run a qauter master now)

But as far as understand now the Coversion flywheel seems to be a tad thicker to compensate the bellhousing length, thisway you can use the LT1 style clutch.

The flywheel needs to be external balanced as i have a 400.

So you gurus please let me know what else i need? As im a bit lost when it comes the American muscle in 4 bangerland we call europe

On  my yearly pilgrimage to SOcal and the MSA west coast national car show i picked up the ingredients to put my ZXR to the Road!

I picked up a Trans Am with TonyD for the gearbox as the entire car is cheaper than a used gearbox. This one had the Hurst shifter and a refurbished T56 in it aswel. Apparently at 111K miles the car stopped driving. so our guess is the opti-spark took a dump.

post-373-0-94181600-1368445001_thumb.jpg

The car looked decent but had been sitting since 2009.

Together with Andy we pulled the gearbox and clutch mechanism and took the mint Borla exhaust off the car ( something that would help making my car sound a bit more civilized)

Pulling the tranny we discovered you had to pull the clutch fork and bell housing to make it separate from the engine! great desing there GM ( or are we just to ignorant to read the manual ;) )

post-373-0-88934800-1368445123_thumb.jpg

I also picked up mclouds flywheel to convert the 2pc rear main seal to the LT1 trans, next was a F1 racing ( cheap eBay unit) clutch kit to hold up the 500 FT torque.

intresting part was that you expect this all Pro Outfit with a name like Mcloud but you get this :)

Kind of cool actually!

Now i just have to wait until the tranny shows as i put it in the trunk of the 380SL I’m shipping for my colleague. So meanwhile I focus on tieing up loose ends on the car as time permits between work and race season with the BMW GTR.

I’ll keep updating!

At this point the car is rough sketch with all sorts of loose ends.. i guess it is time to get the show on the road after 4 years
