LSx s30 Longtube group buy thread

Gauging interest in new LSx long tube header group buy -

Over the years others have made strong efforts to do a run of long tube headers for the LSxZ's but no one has [other than one-offs] them currently available.

I'm not wanting to step on any toes, just want a quality, reasonably priced long tube for my z.

So, did some research and found a reliable shop willing and able to build headers. They have been in business for 7+ years and are accredited by the BBB. I was referred to them by a very competent fabricator/friend who works at the shop that tuned my Z. Unfortunately they are not set up to handle a production run like this.

Specifications / details of the proposed LSx Datsun S30z Long Tubes

* 36" equal-length primaries

* 16 ga (industry standard) T304 stainless steel, mandrel bends

* 1.75" primary tubes all Tig welded

* 3/8" thick, stainless steel flanges

* 3†open collector-straight pipe [see v-band option below]

* sufficient clearance for spark plug access

* designed to fit the johns cars engine / trans mounts, 70-78 s30's

* new header bolts

* new oem Multi Layer Steel (MLS) exhaust gaskets

* oxygen sensor bungs welded into collector (1 per header)

* prototype set built using donor car supplied by sunnyz

* approximate 4 week time to build prototype pair

* 4 weeks to build group buy header run once prototype is completed

* price; $825/ pair, including all above

* after initial run, headers will be ordered / built individually and priced approximately 25% higher

* options [links added below to further explain v-bands and hi speed collectors];

* v-band connectors $110 and include:

* v-band connection tig welded to collector

* mating v-band connection included to weld to your exhaust

* high speed merge collectors $325

Once list of committed buyers is assembled and production is ready to go we'll provide you via email / pm the shop contact information so you can provide your deposit and any individual variations you want [pricing details for special orders other than listed above will be quoted by shop].

As you know hbz policy prohibits taking deposits / payments prior to having product in hand. SunnyZ & myself will be funding the prototype pair. the shop contracted will not take any deposits until production is ready to go. once ready, each buyer will contact the shop directly

Next steps; subscribe to the thread & post with quantity desired, options from above list and your hbz user name, we'll then add you to the list. Once this list reaches 15, prototype production begins. Updates and pics of prototypes will be added as we receive them. Once prototypes begin the shop estimates 3-4 weeks to build them. once complete, production should take about 4 weeks to build headers for those on the list below.

feel free to email/pm me with any questions you may have

As we discussed David I will commit to a set, standard options. Should they not work with my C5 motor mount set-up I would be selling them to someone else on your list. I'm anxious to see detailed pictures from the prototype on SunnyZ's car to get a feel whether or not this solves my specific dilemma.

Thanks for taking the initiative.

No worries about stepping on my toes. I wasn't able to deliver in a timely manner so I don't blame you guys for seeking out other options. I wasn't even able to find stainless collectors for less that $100 each and the flanges were about $100 a pair. So if your guy can churn out a pair with stainless flanges and collectors for less than $1000, more power to you. I wasn't doing this as a business venture, I was just wanting to help this community, so I am pleased to 'pass the torch' to you.

I wish you well and I will gladly buy a pair (as needed/requested) for my S30 LSx customers as well.

Good luck and if you have any questions on my designs, I am more than wiling to share.

Take care.

cable, many thanks for the grace and kind/supportive words. i too am not doing this as a business venture but in the hope we can all benefit with the much desired long tubes. let me know if you'd like to be added to the list...

all, i added a couple things to the initial post

anticipated timeline

links to detail the available options; v-band connections and hi-speed merge collectors. simply click on the link

for v-bands or hs collectors it is not an either or you can add both, either or neither. your choice

Please put me on the list. Keith Thompson is the name. I'm spending $900 on Wolf Creek Axles, so what is another "while I'm at it?" I don't know the difference between the a merge collector or a v-band - I'll take your recommendation. My issue with headers is always GROUND CLEARANCE. Please keep it tight and off the ground. Also, think about how to support the distal end of the headers-could you put a tab on the collector that would allow the collector to bolt to the transmission, or something similar? My JTR headers were obviously made for a different mount system than the JCI mounts because the header is sooo close to the driver's side mount-I'd love to have something different. Also, if price becomes an issue, I've had great luck with factory-quality ceramic coatings; they actually stay nicer than stainless; would be just as happy with that, if not happier.

Put me down for a set. What's the difference in the regular collectors the header come with vs. the high speed collectors offered as an option?

Cable,

I had originally told you I wanted a set of your headers but if you are stepping down I'm going with one of these. If not I will go with yours since I commited to you first.

headers come without flanges [think straight pipe]. you can opt for the v-band connectors if so desired. the v-bands come with the mating connector to weld to the exhaust you'll connect to the header, pricing in the post. in the first post click on either v-band or hs merge collector to view more info [they are linked]

would i be overstepping my bounds if i asked to post a link in your longtube thread to this one?

Thanks but I'm still not clear on what's the difference between the collector the headers come with vs. the high speed collectors. All LS longtube headers come with 4 into 1 collectors and from what I have seem from the LS longtube headers I have purchased in the past they come sized and designed for optimum power not with optional parts to make them perform better. Is the high speed collector better engineered than the one that is provided?

Please don't take my comments the wrong way. I'm just trying to understand why a high speed collector is offered as an option.

As far as I understand it, the high speed merge collector uses a diameter reduction then increase to cause a scavenging effect and velocity increase. It will essentially make the exhaust flow more efficiently.

I will take a set of these, with the Vband setup.

Thanks for all your input guys. I guess I'm just used to buying headers that come with the best collectors available and there is no option to improve them that's why I was confused, I'm sure that's why they cost me $1600 for a pair.

I will take a set of these headers with the high speed collectors and v band as well. It will still be cheaper than my C6 Z06 LG Motorsport long tubes. :D

Ya you actually don't see high speed merge collectors on most bulk aftermarket headers. Pretty sure none of the ones I've worked with on vettes, camaros, and mustangs have had them. Its a pretty snazzy option to have, just not sure I have an extra 350 to throw on it :(

Well your to be congradulated for taking on this effort. It would not bother me one bit if you were being compensated for it too. It takes alot to make such happen. Thanks!

in case anyone was wondering, i am not doing this as a business venture/to make $ but only to get long tubes in the hands of us lsx s30 swap owners who want them-me included!
