I am on the opposite side of this thing from most of you guys. I had a Z in high school and college. I then went out into the working world and onto new cars. I have had a 1997 Prelude, a 2002 BMW M3, and now have a 2006 M45 as my daily driver. I just recently purchased a 72 240 as a project car.
Maybe all of you are too close. It's like when you meet a girl, you love all those quirky little things about her. As time goes on all these same things start to annoy you. But when she is gone you miss her.
The 240z is a fantastic car. It's design is timeless and even now doesn't look dated. It is the forebearer of all Japanese sports cars in America. Now that it is more than 30 years old, I think the value is only going to go up, like the 60's Muscle cars already have.
Maybe it is the distance of time that is tainting my memory. But I loved my first Z and I am sure that I will love this one. There is something pure and simple about the experience of driving and owning a Z. For me it is not a compromise, I could afford to buy just about any (within reason) car I wanted.
I wanted a Z.
