  1. I just found this thread. Hopefully the starter is still watching... You should join our "NissanDiesel" forum if you want to find a lot of information on these engines. We are quite knowledgeable and the forum owner is *very* knowledgeable about these engines. $1700 seems like a lot to me, but I also plan on picking up a very nice 83 maxima, spare motor and spare trans this summer for less than that, but I am lucky and have stumbled upon one hell of a deal... Since you already have the engine and are getting ready to install it, let me say a couple things. First, about the 5 speed tranny: when installed on diesel engines they eat mainshaft bearings. It might be worthwhile to up the size/strength of the bearing before you install the engine and tranny. Second, about BD,SVO and WVO. BD is a great fuel and when processes *correctly* it can be a great fuel, when processed *incorrectly* it can be terribly damaging to an engine. SVO and WVO are not very good fuels. The engine will run on them, but it is hard on the already old injector pump and can cause coking of the injectors and ring lands eventually killing the motor- due to the additional chemicals found in the unprocessed VO. Third, about turbocharging: the 280zxt ex. manifold does bolt up to the head. The thought is to use a 300zx turbo and downpipe and have a custom exhaust made. You can't run a lot of boost because you can't add fuel, but 7-8 lbs will clean up the exhaust, add a little bit of power and improve fuel efficiency to some degree. I plan on doing this once I get my car. It is more or less a bolt on mod, but you can't over boost it or you will melt the motor down. An intercooler would help, but seeing as how you can't run *too* much boost on the engine it is not really necessary. BTW: the 240 that was coverted to LD28 turbo power is currently for sale in Denver on craigslist for $15,000. So, welcome to the world of LD28s. I'm glad to see that someone else appreciates them as much as a select few of us do!
  2. So is it the location of the pins relative to the ecu that changed from year to year? Would an 81 harness need to be used with an 81 ecu, etc., etc.? Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info out there regarding the specific changes from year to year.
  3. Does anyone know if (or what) there were differences between wiring harnesses from year-to-year. I am preparing to do an L28E swap into a 1st gen maxima and am curious as to whether I can use my existing Maxima harness and an 81 L28E ECU with my newly acquired 81 L28E engine. Going through both motors, I see all of the same sensors as on my L24E, thus all of the same connectors.
  4. So I am thinking about the oil pickup relocation, the drilling and tapping involved and whether or not the excess metal shavings so close to vital engine components and oil galleys is going to warrant a teardown at minimum and a rebuild possibly? Even being careful, or done at a machine shop, I don't know if it's possible to avoid contamination. I was hoping (assuming I do this swap) to do the necessary mods, button it up, and bolt it in without having to do a teardown or rebuild.
  5. Ok...clear now...was getting a little confused. That's a big if...I guess scouring the junkyards once a week might produce an LD28 diesel oil pan. Pretty rare car though.
  6. Thanks for the additional information. This is starting to come together in my head. I guess I am wondering whether or not this procedure will require a complete teardown to assure that no metal shavings from drilling, tapping, etc., end up in the engine and eventually tear it up. As far as steering linkage clearance...I have rack and pinion power steering which offers more cleance than the old recirculating ball but...I am trying to wring more info out of a guy that has done the L28et conversion in an 84 Maxima. That will be a question I pose to him. Thanks for the input.
  7. So the oil drain tube would be used for the dipstick?
  8. From what I have heard, the L24e has a front oil pickup tube and the L28 has a rear pickup tube. It is my understanding that in order to perform the conversion (L28 into the Maxima) you must relocate the oil pickup tube and presumably use the Maxima oil pan. I am looking for some more detailed info on the procedure. I am a member of maxima.org, but there just isn't much traffic on the 1st gen forum and I haven't found much infor regarding the specific procedure.
  9. I am considering a L28et swap into my 83 Maxima, but am trying to find more information on the oil sump modification that would need to be done to the L28 block for my car to accept it. Does anyone have any detailed info on this, or know of a resource?
