  1. It could be rain water as well. If it were coolant I would expect that the OP would have smelled it if there was enough to soak the carpet and pool around the drain plug like that. Seems that St.Louis has had a decent amount of rain lately so I wouldn't jump to a leaky heater core quite yet!
  2. Hi everyone. So I have a predicament as usual with my Z rebuild. To give a brief back story I bought a car which previously had a V8 swap in it. Obviously the transmission mount "ears" have been hacked off to fit the V8's transmission in the tunnel. I want to install (for the time being) an L24 with a 280zx 5 speed mated to it. However I do not have ANY welding skills or access to a welder at the moment. I could have the car towed to a shop and something welded up for me but that is quite a hassle and I was hoping for a "bolt on" option. Does anyone have any ideas? I've checked out the technoversions V8 transmission crossmember that bolts to the floorpan but it appears to bolt farther back than the stock transmission mount and I don't know if it would span the gap at the stock location? I've thought about looking at an RB Mckinney mount, but I am unsure of the mount location relative to the stock mount? Any help would be much appreciated edit: it looks like coltgt463 was able to move his crossmember up to what looks to be almost in line with the stock mount location. It looks similar to the technoversions (I think it may be a JCI?), I will try contacting him and report back http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/92374-sbc-to-ls1-conversion-what-parts-can-be-re-used/
  3. Hi everyone. So i've been runing in circles on my fuel system plans toying with different ideas. The goal is to support a RB25 motor but I want to keep the body of my 73 240z stock (ie: not cut out the spare tire well) so this limits my options some (F-body tanks and fuel cells were eliminated pretty quickly from my list of possible fuel tank options). Before I start I should mention I have researched many different fuel setups like sumping the stock tank with the addition of an external surge tank, baffling the stock tank, intank pump setups, combinations of the previously mentioned, ATL black boxes, you name it i've researched it. I am however looking wide and trying to investigate possibilities for alternative tanks that are still in the back of my mind right now. Alternative tanks I am investigating: (1) R32 skyline tank: I have never found a thread discussing the possibility of a skyline tank in a 240z. More specifically an r32 model skyline. In fact I can't even seem to find a picture of an r32 fuel tank in my searches online??? With young "boy racers" in my area crashing skylines on a regular basis this would be an easily accessible option if I could get it to fit. (2) S13 240sx tank: I have found a couple of threads that state it is a little longer than the stock 240z tank and the bulge on the passenger side may require some work to clear the spare tire however that is as much as I could find. No mention of how close a fit it is (guy who I know is using one got anxious and just cut the tire well out to get it to fit so it doesn't really help me) and no mention of anyone successfully running it without cutting the spare tire well through modification of the tank itself (no clear mention that it won't work either!). (3) Mustang tank: Specifically I was looking at foxbody ones which are plentiful at the local junker. They have a similar shape to the 240z tank however I have no idea how long, wide and high they are (can't find dimensions online), I may head to the junker tomorrow with a tape measure and try to get the dimensions. Can anyone shed some light on these three options I am researching? Are there any I can eliminate right off the bat? I would think these options have been investigated in the past but I really can't find any documentation on them. I do understand that ANY tank will fit with enough modification but if there is one that will fit with minimal work then I figure why not? I'm expecting that I will end up doing something like an ATL blackbox or a sump feeding an external surge tank but I want to make sure i've exhausted all options before I go down either of those roads and have to find a good shop to do the tank work.
  4. Xenons30.com is where you want to start (downloadable fsm). They also have the efast system you can download for part numbers but to be honest I don't recommend the efast system I find the scanned microfiche are too low quality. For figuring out part numbers I recommend: http://www.carpartsmanual.com/. They have great resolution (for the most part) parts diagrams.
  5. Xenons30 does not have 1970 or 1971 FSMs(except 71 chassis supplement). Is there something specific you need it for OP?
  6. ah, could be hard, Zs don't come through the junk yards in my city. The closest we get are zx's every once in a blue moon and I saw one anomalous 510 that came through a year or two ago. Might have to find someone parting their car
  7. Thanks for the additional replies, the Eastwood tools just went on sale so I will order them pretty soon here. I have two more questions that google doesn't seem to return the answer on: My car is missing the rear brake line T. Now with my 73 I believe I have the proportioning valve up in the engine bay mounted on the firewall so the rear T should be exactly that, just a simple T. The nissan T appears to be out of production and not available anywhere as far as I can tell. I attempted to search up a generic T through sites such as fedhill but the only one I can find for a double flare are 12mm x1.0 not the 10mm I require. Any options that others are aware of? Second; the 10mm double flare fittings from fedhill come in either long or short(will update with link later), any idea which one to use?
  8. Thank you to all that posted, my fears have been put to rest. I found the number stamped on the body and it matches all the tags. Mods, please feel free to close and delete this thread. Thanks again.
  9. ha ain't that the truth! somehow forgot about the vin stamped on the body, I will have to check that when I get home to make sure. Thanks for not flaming a newb
  10. Hi everyone, so I got a bit of a surprise today with my Z. Long story short (of vehicle history): - bought an advertised 1973 240z from a very well respected local Z guy - the Z guy bought this car off another guy who had just completed stripping the car and having it painted - Car was never registered by the guy I bought it off of and just sat in his workshop - Car contains no drivetrain - vin tags were removed for painting and given to me separated from the car with the exception of the Vin on the dash which is still on the car (and matches the other tags) As a diligent buyer I ran a history report and checked the local police to see if the vehicle attached to that VIN had ever been reported stolen/written off etc, and the vin came up clean Now comes the part that concerns me. I went to buy a Wilwood M/C for my 4piston front w/rear disc setup and the seller asked me to check to make sure the fittings could be swapped onto the Wilwood MC and low and behold my car appears to have an early master cylinder installed on it (with the large nuts/fittings on the bottom that can not be swapped onto the wilwood MC)- markings are "tokico 7/8". I've been racking my brain all day trying to think why someone would install an early MC on a 73 Z. Can anyone help me with verifying what year the car is?? With no drivetrain and no diff/moustache bar on the car when I bought it either (which would have been a give away) I can't figure out a way of ensuring the car I have in my garage matches the vin (Also didn't have any bumpers on it so I can't use that). I have been reading through everything I can find on differentiating the model years, but I can't seem to find any definitive markings that would be non-removable from the vehicle that would lead me to a definitive answer... On a side note is the dash vin attached to the dash pad or is attached to metal on the body? I took a quick look but its darn cold in the garage right now and I have poor lighting in there so I couldn't tell Thanks.
  11. good idea. I think I'll do practice flares until I don't want to flare another brake line in my life... then do a few more and after that I'll try the final product. After watching a few youtube videos I'm a little more confident I can do this. Thanks for the suggestions, I will keep you guys posted.
  12. Thanks for the suggestions so far, just did a quick search and am looking at this flaring tool: http://www.eastwood.com/professional-brake-tubing-flaring-tool.html Any comments on the quality of this tool? I am still not confident flaring my own lines but i guess with snow on the ground i've got several months to learn!
  13. Hi everyone,so i've run into a snag on my project car. The car is currently missing all brake lines downstream of the brake distribution block. I was hoping to find a pre-bent kit but I can't seem to find one. The closest I got was a mention of "classic tube" in an old thread but it appears they no longer sell their pre-bent kit for the 240z (unless I'm looking in the wrong spot?). Are there any companies selling pre-bent kits? (I am not concerned about pricing) My next option if there are no companies selling pre bent kits I would think would be to buy pre-flared lines (as I don't trust myself to make good flares) and bend them to fit. Black dragon does sell what they claim to be lines properly flared for the Z application in different lengths (page 89: http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/ZR/full.aspx?Page=89 ). My question is are these quality lines and the correct flare/fittings as they claim to be. Not to bad mouth black dragon as I've had some great experiences with them, but after a few bad experiences with product quality (motor mounts with incorrect threads and pins cast in the wrong position for example) I am wary of purchasing safety critical items like brake lines from them. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
