  1. I had a similar issue with doing this CV conversion. I actually bought the companion flanges from Ross at Modern Motorsports years ago, and found a set of 300ZXt axles. Never got to the project until about two months ago. At the time when I purchased the companion flanges, It was my understanding that all you had to do was flip the outer cage on the axles and you were good to go. I had the same fitment issue, even with the cages flipped. I contacted Joe, who now runs Modern Motorsports, and he said that he did NOT have the axles, and was not getting any more, and he also told me that he did not have the specs. Hmmm. As it turns out, I WAS able to find a set of axles from Whitehead Performance. They are roughly an inch shorter than the stock units. Not cheap, but this will be a proper conversion with excellent fitment.

  3. Congratulations on your win! I know there are some purists out there, but when you see a good conversion you can't help but think that the V8 is what Nissan meant to put in there, don't you think?

    AS for my Z, things are still pretty much at a stand still. I know it sounds pathetic, but there have been a lot of other projects that have found their way to the top of the list in front of the Zcar. I do have my motor built, although not in the car yet. I hope I remember how to put everything back in order as I make my way through it.

    I just moved my office, which took about a 4-5 weeks of 12-16 hour days. I am totally excited to be in the new spot. It's smaller (1800 vs. 3000 sq. ft.), but much more efficiently set up, 3x more drive by traffic, better neighborhood, updated and new with everything deluxe on the interior. I have become quite handy at trim molding and painting. I will keep you posted as I get the Z dusted off. Glad to hear from you.

  4. Wow, long time no hear! How are things going with you and your Z? I just took mine to a car show in Louisiana and I won best 280Z, yahoo. Its was at a Nissan dealer and all the participants voted. I figured since I was running a Chevy engine I had no shot but they fooled me. Great show, lots of cool Z's.

  8. Dale, that car's looking great! -for others reading on this thread, don't miss the custom taillight panel and the trick side marker lights on this car as well. Very cool touches. I used the same bumper brackets from Datsun Spirit for my CF bumper conversion, but bent the brackets to match the mounts on the bumper, as I do not have Deja's fiberglassing skills.
  9. Just got my 280Z taillight panel from Paulo at Retro-spec. It is absolutely beautiful, and took 5 days from payment date to arrive. I also had great communication and follow up from him. I'd love to see a CF center console and a CF steering column cover for these cars, and maybe some other interior accents...

  11. Sounds like the PO got JACKED!!! Depending on your relationship with the previous owner, I would definitely incorporate them into your pursuit of this issue, march into the shop and call the owner on the carpet over this. First of all, depending on the mileage, not likely that the diff was worn out, and secondly, it seems logical to do any necessary repairs on one of these rather than to swap it out, especially for an employee's one legger R200. If you can get the PO to cooperate, and if this wasn't done 10 years ago, it might be worth your time and the threat of exposure on the shop's side to the community, and to the bureau of automotive repair, for that shop to make right on this. Just my $.02, but it pisses me off just to hear about it.
  12. I am really surprised to hear of your misfortune with these batteries. I have had the same red top for 5 years and it has seen some abuse. It even got hooked up on a charger with the poles reversed for about 4 hours on one occasion, and still works like a charm! This is the first I have ever heard of one of these batteries giving anyone any trouble. I think I got mine from a high end auto stereo shop...

  15. Something else just occured to me Dale. You may wish to replace the front diff insulator. Once they get fatigued they can make the clunking noise. I believe that you mentioned that you hear the "usual clunk" when you take off. That is definitely a sign. (Others, please correct me if I am wrong.) When I get into doing any suspension work on the cars I have owned, (5 S30's so far) I always just replace the front diff mount. It removes slop, vibration and the "usual" clunking noise.
