    The V8 swap project

This is a car i've owned for 23 years, and before that it was owned by my mom in stock condition. I decided to do a V8 swap, as the crank was damaged on the L28 engine. It would have had to come out and be re-done anyway, so I just decided what the hell. I started this project in June of 2008. It is just now coming to completion. A few buddies that I work with & I have spent most of our Saturdays since 6/08 to finish this car. It is a 1976 280Z Coupe with a brand new Chevy RamJet 350 crate motor. 350hp, 400lbft torque. T5 five speed borg warner out of an 89 Z28 along with bellhousing, flywheel, & clutch slave cylinder. Shorty headers, running into 2-1/2" tubing to twin moroso glasspacks to a Y, 3" tubing through a moroso muffler out a 3" tailpipe. New Silvermine stage 4 disc brakes for front. Ran out of cash for rear. Will do at a later time. New carpet kit from Motorsport. More to come......... Well the car is finally on the street. Still have a lot of little things to finish up, but it's coming along fine. Runs great, very fast. Getting a lot of looks...is all that rumble coming out of that little Z? YES!
  2. Thanks guys, I just have a few more things to complete before the maiden voyage. Need to install clutch slave which came with the T5 out of 89 Z28, bleed the brakes (installed Silvermine stage 4 front brake kit), install exhaust, finish carpet kit from Motorsport, & install new used seats out of 95 Z28! Hopefully I'll be driving it this Saturday! Zcarlover
  3. Hey 280zone & Deja, Déjà , after going to the carcraft article you referred me to, I almost immediately closed it, once I realized it was an article I was very familiar with. I actually bookmarked this article 2 or 3 months ago after finding it in a google search & finding it very useful for multiple things. However, I didn't close it & began reading the plumbing section once again. In the left margin there are photos from their project with captions below them. I happened to look at the photo of a fuel rail fitting which they had to customize to go below the distributor. They mention the inlet side....& it clicked, DUH! I'm almost embarrassed to say that we had the lines on backwards. For some reason we were thinking fuel pressure regulator on inlet side. Wrong. Anyway, my car is about 60 miles away in my buddy's garage. I called him & started to explain & he hung up & went out to the garage. He called me back about 10 minutes later & said it fired right up & purred like a loud open header kitten! Finally after 10 months of Saturday's. Zcarlover
  4. I have finally finished wiring my RamJet 350 to my '76 280Z. However, I can't get it to fire up. It's turning over with plenty of spark but will not start. The pump is working fine, and has more than enough psi for the engine. The fuel is making it all the way to the fuel pressure regulator, but not into the fuel rail. ???? I got a new regulator just to be sure, and no change. I bought a fuel pressure gauge, hooked it up to the valve on the fuel rail, and it does not register ANY pressure. I also had a code on the diagnostic tool which I went through the steps to clear, and no luck with starting. We can't figure this problem out. Can anybody give me any ideas, please? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Zcarlover (Steve)
  5. The hood still clears the top of the intake plenum on the RamJet 350, which is great because I don't want a modified hood. I like it stock looking. I can't tell you the exact measurement, but it does fit without modification.
  6. Hey rsicard & strotter, I'll definitely let you know the results of hood clearance after Sat. And strotter: Good info on the strut bar. I had one for the 6, but haven't looked into one for the chevy. I'll look around. I have even thought of having my welding buddy customize my old one to fit. We'll see! Zcarlover
  7. Hey rsicard, The engine & trans are installed. After engine was bolted in, but before trans was bolted up to crossmember, we set the hood on. We could get about 3 fingers between the intake plenum & the hood. The trans was sitting on a jack before bolting to crossmember. After hookup I would say it went up an inch or two. But we have not set the hood back on. We are probably going to do that Saturday. I'll let you know then! The Japanese were thinking of this swap when they put that nice hump in the hood Zcarlover
  8. Hey FastZ, Thanks 4 the link. I just downloaded a diagram last week, but my main concern is trying 2 figure out which wiring I can get rid of. I already removed the Z brain and injector wiring, but I don't want any other unused hot wires etc. to cause a fire or something. I guess we'll just have 2 trace everything 2 be sure. Thanks again, Steve
  9. I am in the process of trying 2 wire a chevy ramjet 350 crate engine 2 my 76 280Z. The chevy came with a full harness. The harness is completely hooked up 2 the engine, but trying 2 figure out how 2 hook up 2 existing Z harness. Does anyone out there know of a schematic that someone has made for such a swap? Probably a stupid question, but what the hell! Any & All help would be extremely appreciated! Steve
  10. Thanks alwaysbroke, I appreciate the info. The trans. I'm looking at has the 2.95 1st. We'll see what I end up with. Thanks, Steve
  11. Is anyone using a Tko 500 with a small block 350? Is there a big difference between the Tko & the T5 other than torque capability? Spline input shaft? GM or Ford? Can I use a Tko out of Mustang with different bellhousing or input shaft? Sorry, as u can see I am really a rookie with this stuff. Any help would be very helpful!! Thanks, Steve. P.S. Is a grand good price for Tko 5000k mi. minus bellhousing?
  12. I hear the TR-3650 is kinda weak. I'll just stick with a T5 or TKO.
  13. Does anyone know anything about the Tremec TR3650, and whether it will work for small block ram jet 350? Any info would be great. Steve
  14. Thanks for all the input everyone. Much appreciated. I will pursue my happiness; aka(getting my tranny so I can go have fun in my Z.) God they're beautiful cars aren't they? Steve
  15. Thanks guys, Any suggestions on where to look? Don't know if I can trust buying from joe shmo off ebay or private party. I guess my best bet would be a rebuilt from reputable shop? U guys probably use T5's; can I ask where you purchased; rebuilt or used? What would u consider fair price? Thanks for any added input u can give! Steve
