  1. Hey there, looking to buy the oil/temp and amp/fuel gauges for a '71 240Z. Must be in operating condition with no major blemishes (I've already got a set in operating condition with major blemishes, haha). I might also be interested in the Volt/Fuel gauge from a 280Z instead of the amp gauge as I'm running a 280ZX alternator. I'm also looking for a cigarette lighter as my '71 had its removed before I bought it and it'd be nice to charge my cell phone on the go. I'm in Orange, CA, zip is 92869. Thanks!
  2. Hey there everyone, I've got a 1971 240Z with an odd issue. Electrics work okay in stock form, but when I tried to install the side marker adapters from MSA (the ones that plug into the turn signals) things stopped working right. I did install new gaskets but the old gaskets were actually properly installed so as expected it didn't solve the problem. With the adapters installed, the right turn signal works perfectly fine. Hitting the right turn signal with the lights off causes both the turn signal and side marker to light, whereas with the lights on the turn signal and side marker alternate. I'm assuming that's normal operation. However, the left turn signal shorts out. The weird bit is that even in this configuration, the side marker will come on with the other lights (i.e. when the turn signal is not active), and with the MSA adapter unplugged on that side the left turn signal works fine. So the side marker circuit appears to be okay and the turn signal circuit appears to be okay. It's just when I plug the black lead from the MSA adapter into the black lead from the side marker that the turn signal shorts out when activated. Any ideas? EDIT: A little more information. I went out and tried swapping which wire the adapater plugged into, but that just resulted in the side marker not lighting at all so it's definitely plugged into the correct wire. Turning the headlights on brings up all lights just fine. Hitting the right turn signal makes the side marker go out when the right turn signal lights, and when the right turn signal goes out the side marker turns back on. If you hit the left turn signal without your lights on, nothing lights (but the rear very dimly tries to). If you hit the left turn signal with the lights on, the left side marker dims slightly while the front and rear turn signals hardly change at all. EDIT 2: Disassembled my side markers again and found the brass screw-holder-thing on the left side of the left sidemarker was not aligned correctly, allowing the screw to contact the body. Realigned everything works fine. What a stupid issue. Thanks everyone, hopefully at least this thread is a good reference for anyone having this problem on Google...
  3. Excuse me for questioning this but as someone who knows a little about those cars, 1990 was the first model year for the Legacy and the earliest production date I know of is in 1989. This would mean the earliest MY Legacy you could've pulled seats from would be a 1990. Just wanted to clear that up a bit just in case people are scrounging around looking for that ever-rare 1988.
  4. Funny, I've got a '78 that does the same thing. I'm figuring Input Shaft Bearing, since as said before, the input shaft doesn't spin when the clutch is disengaged. The later post about fluid leaking from the speedo drive is interesting, since my speedo doesn't work either. Cable's fine, gauge's fine, and the cable keys in properly on both ends... but apparently the bit in the transmission doesn't spin since I get nothing on the gauge. I also get a clicking noise that's independent of engine speed but increases with vehicle speed, so that's probably a hint right there. Meh. The car runs and shifts for now. I'll probably end up tossing another trans in eventually to solve the problem. Almost not worth it to rebuild the one that's in it.
  5. Sweet! Email sent! hoov100, any luck at the junkyard? You're the most local, so.
  6. Thanks, am waiting on hoov100. Will pm you in case he can't find one.
  7. Sounds good to me! S30 just to be sure, just noticed I didn't specify. Thanks!
  8. As it says, am looking for the piece bolted onto the edge of the hood that has the spring-loaded plunger and the safety handle. Held on by two bolts, that part.
  9. Just finished taking out the dash today, so could finally find all the wires that have been disconnected randomly. One of them was the power to the A/C control switches, so that explains why the A/C wasn't working at all. However, I'm now stumped as to what a few of these wires are. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Starting off, there are two wires in the ignition switch area that are pronged but with nothing to plug into. One is coming from the wiring harness, the other is coming from the ignition switch on the front-left side. Also, not in this picture is the back of the ignition switch itself. The ignition switch has five prongs, but the white harness plug that goes into it only has wires+contacts for the bottom four prongs. The fifth fits into the harness but doesn't connect to anything. My guess is that someone took an ignition switch off a different year car and expected it to work, and that's why there are wires/prongs that lead to nowhere. I don't know, though. This next wire with female plug is near where the tachometer would be. Between the steering column and the climate controls. No clue what this is, either. These are the ones near the center console, passenger side. The ones being pointed to I'm pretty sure are the ones cut from the radio, so I'm not too worried about them. No clue what the capped-off green one and the red one with the prong on it are, and don't know what that black plug with wires cut off of it is. Also, it seems that the wires in the center console that power the "ashtray light" don't go into anything down here, oddly. And finally, these two wires by the fusebox that just dangle to nowhere. Again, no clue what's supposed to plug into these. Any help would be super greatly appreciated! I'm waiting on a speedometer cable to come in, so until then I'll have the dash out anyway. If I get all this wiring squared away by then, all the better!
  10. Thanks you guys, after doing a little more research I'm inclined to agree with the input shaft bearing assessment. Guess I'll drive it like that for a while while looking for a new tranny to drop in.
  11. Okay, I've searched all around about this noise and about 50% of the results I've found are POSITIVE that it's from the pilot bushing. The other 50% are POSITIVE it's from the throwout bearing. I have not a clue how the 280Z transmission related to other manual transmissions, so I have no clue which it is. Here's my car and the symptom. Stock 78 280Z, 5-speed. When in neutral or in gear and the clutch is engaged (pedal released), there is a whirring noise from the transmission. The noise increases in pitch with RPMs. The noise vanishes when the clutch pedal is depressed to the point where clutch disengagement happens. The noise does NOT cease by merely touching the clutch pedal. If the clutch pedal is pushed in, the engine is revved up, and the clutch is released (all the while, the transmission is in neutral) the sound will increase in pitch to match the revs once the clutch is engaged. I should note that so far, the sound is merely annoying. I haven't had any particular problems shifting the car. So, what do you guys say?
