  1. Yes the noise is still present with the vac advance disconnected. Im pretty certain its not detonation now. I retarded the total timing to 18 degrees, zero initial and the noise is still there but the power is way down. Still looking for input on best total advance for this engine....... I think the noise may be from an exhaust leak..... although none is evident at idle.
  2. I have had an issue with my 240z for as long as I can remember. It sounds like it is experiencing detonation at part throttle under a load. The engine is stock with the exception of a 280zx EI distributor. The initial timing is set at 7 degrees at 750 rpm. The total mechanical advance is all in at 2700 rpm. The total timing (initial 7) plus (mechanical 18) totals 25 degrees. This seems pretty tame to me. A typical performance v8 usually produces best power at 30-35 degees of total timing. I'm not certain how much a datsun inline 6 needs. I have tried taking the timing back eve further and enriching the carbs but nothing seems to effect the sound/feel that I percieve as detonation. I have tried it with and without the vacum advance connected. Currently Im driving without any vacum advance but the vac advance when conected adds 24 degrees. I have a wideband sensor and when the sound occurs the AF ratio is in the mid 12:1 range..... Suggestions? so far I have been ignoring it but its beginning to drive me crazy. I suppose the real question I have is how much timing is safe with premium pump gas in a stock l24.
  3. At the Canby Datsun meet last year I saw a 280zx that had the diesel engine installed. It was a double take moment for me when I saw a Z Diesel. I doubt that would be a difficult swap, however the question is, why?
  4. Hey, only my second thread on this board and it has 28 posts. Woo Hoo! Here is a photo of my wife smiling after getting a chance to start and rev up a fairly nice car yesterday.
  5. Are they ever really done? The car is on display at the Portland Roadster Show in portland oregon this weekend. We were/are still putting the finishing touches on the car. A 2.8 engine and 5 speed are being built for installation at a later time.
  6. Here is a recent photo of my 240z post restoration.
  7. I have a some ideas for interest grabbing thread titles. However I'm not sure how strict the mods are here........... yet.
  8. I assume the self pic would only be effective if I had breasts right????

  10. Thanks, I guess Im not the only one who is stumped.
  11. This is my first time posting on this forum. I did some searching and couldn't find a solution to my proplem. I have a 1971 240Z that I have completely restored. We have had an intermittent problem since we purchased the car 3 years ago and it continues to this day. It will intermitently run extreamely rough and virtually stall when hot. Its is like its dropping one carb. I dissassembled and cleaned the SU carbs per the Z therapy video (several years ago). The fuel tank has been cleaned and treated with sealer. The fuel lines have been cleaned, flushed and all of the hoses replaced. I added an electric fuel pump from an RX7 in the back and replaced the mechanical fuel pump up front with a new MSA replacment pump. I recently replaced the fuel inlet valves and reset the float level. The car has a 280zx distributor with new plug wires, cap and rotor and we have replaced the module once trying to resolve this issue. I am begining to think that one of the carb slides/pistons may be sticking when the car gets hot. I don't remember this problem occuring until quite some time after I cleaned and adjusted the carbs. I'm hoping for any suggestions, the car always seems to act up when Im away from home and my wife has to put up with it.
