	Well I am going down quite a rabbit hole now. I recently ordered Julian Edgar's newly released book. Very down to earth and all practical solutions to testing and tuning production car aero on a tight budget without CFD or wind tunnels. For example he uses a throttle stop to measure changes that affect drag. Stop the throttle at 10 or 15% and measure top speed at roughly 50 or 60 mph.  Make an aero change, then check top speed again.

	Not cheap, but 500 pages packed full of info and lots of pictures. Highly recommended if you are looking to reduce drag and lift on your car.

	I picked up an extruded AL wing off of ebay for a surprisingly good price. 65" wing, $379 plus tax. <a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/324563472720" rel="external nofollow">https://www.ebay.com/itm/324563472720</a> When it shipped it went from FL to WA, then to IL, then back to WA. So it went about 7000 miles to be delivered 3000 miles away. The built in gurney got bent from all the extra traveling, but only a couple inches in from the end and I think I can probably straighten some of it. I talked to the seller and I took a discount and I'll chop the end off. I think I can make it a 63 or 64 inch wing and make that work. They suggested a miter saw, which I have, so shouldn't be too big a deal to cut it (hoping). Actually just looked at it again, now thinking of hacking off the gurney instead and keeping the full width...<br />

	Looking at how to do chassis mount. Years ago I had talked to Cary and he had suggested a 1/8" aluminum plate from the hatch to the floor to take the vertical load. I still have the piece that I bought years ago. Thinking I can screw to the hatch area at the top, and just run the plate straight down to a piece of angle aluminum, and then bolt that straight to the frame rails with nutserts. The problem is where it hits the car. There is a natural angle where the outer weatherstrip goes, then a step down to another angle where the main hatch weather strip goes. I can't put the upright on the first ledge. There isn't enough room for a decent sized fastener in there. If I put it down a step, then the upright takes up too much space and I'd have to really hack into my fiberglass hatch to get it on. I think the solution is to cut a slot in the first step and slide the uprights down into the chassis and then bolt through. There is a doubled up piece of metal in the hatch there which will make it harder to get to the back side of the 1/8" sheet. Think I'll weld nuts to the aluminum to solve that problem.<br />

	Going to trace the wing profile onto a piece of cardboard and start playing with uprights. <br />

	Plan is 1/4" 6061 for the uprights from the body to the wing. I could probably cut holes to lighten it from there, but I'm not going to worry about it right now. More fixated on getting it installed on the car.<br />

<p>I keep thinking about this pitch sensitivity on splitters and I've come up with an idea, and I guess I'm looking to see if anyone has done this before or knows in advance why it wouldn't work.</p>

<p>Here it is: As an example, imagine a 6" deep splitter mounted fairly high off the ground, maybe 4" or 5" high, with an air dam skirt on the leading edge that hangs down basically on the ground. I was looking at Competition Car Aerodynamics and it's clear that with both an air dam and a splitter you have a low pressure on the underside/backside. In theory the splitter have less pitch sensitivity and still have a nice pressure differential between the top and bottom of the splitter. As a side bonus it would be a lot easier to load a car on a trailer with 4" of ground clearance in front.</p>

<p>I know the pressure differential doesn't look as high for the air dam in CCA's diagram on p 65 so the splitter may be less effective, but I still think this might work reasonably well and solve the pitch sensitivity issue and might be an improvement over a traditional splitter on a relatively low speed car that is relatively softly sprung. I see guys putting splitters on cars with relatively soft suspensions, and I can't help but thinking that the splitter is probably doing as much harm as good as it bounces up and down at the front of the car.</p>

<p>Hey Hybrid Z folks....</p>
<p>I am putting together an E- engine 4.5VKDD engine to attempt breaking the E/GT record currently held by a Vette. Horsepower should not be a problem.....Dave and Brian at Rebello are busy doing the homework to make ???hp. We will publish the HP numbers after we dyno it.</p>
<p>My issue is wanting to know the real numbers with and without the G-nose vs the attitude (rake) in the car plus what angle and position to place the parachute(s) at so they don't fall on the ground when deployed. I have a very capable guy who is willing to do the CFD analysis to give a 95% certain answer to all of my questions above. </p>
<p>Anyone that can help I will gladly share our results with.</p>
<p>I have seen several posts where people have some models started but really need one complete with as much undercarriage as possible. </p>
<p>Of course apple juice at the diner at the entrance to the Bonneville speedway will also be included.......</p>

I am doing a masters in motorsport engineering and need to do a ground vehicle aerodynamics project and have one idea for another vehicle but my heart is always with datsuns..... one idea i have for datsuns is is it possible to reduce front lift without a front spoiler that changes the look of the car.... im open to other ideas and if anyone has cad files of the car I can run through CFD and then maybe 3d print to get in the tunnel would also be much appreciated! let me hear your ideas!

<p>Would completely blocking off the engine bay and diverting air over the hood be a good idea? </p>

<p>I have drilled my rear deck to accept 2 different spoilers:  a small version similar to the BRE/factory/432 style and a larger version that I think was manufactured by ZCC-JDM. I've got them set up so that I can swap them fairly fast (depending on how fast I can find each screw I drop in the grass or under my workbench).  I wish I lived closer to the A2 wind tunnel, because I'd probably rent a session if money were the only restriction, but I'm also restricted by time and distance. So...I'm hoping for low-wind days at the GA 1/2-Mike and the Ohio Mile (and a consistent driver), so I can report back to the forum about how these spoilers (to include no-spoiler) affect top speed and subjective "stability." <p>Long, flat undertray on the 280ZX V8, connects to the bottom of the front spoiler and goes right back to the front of the engine and right out to the sides in front of the wheels. Looking at it from above it's a T shape with the curved head of the T connected to the spoiler, it's around 1.1m/43" long front to back. Bit hard to take a pic of it fitted so lots of description <img src="https://forums.hybridz.org/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt=":)" data-emoticon="" srcset="https://forums.hybridz.org/uploads/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" data-src="https://forums.hybridz.org/uploads/emoticons/default_smile.png"></p>

<p>The question is, should the back of the tray stay flat or should say 75mm/3" of it be bent up or down?  Going on what a lot of modern cars have I've bent the back down to about a 45 degree angle, assuming this will help extract air from the engine bay and not have any negative aero effect although the result is an upside down hatch spoiler shape there which may by itself generate lift. But of course there is air flow on both sides of the 'spoiler' which I assume changes things.</p>

<p>In all my aero research I've never seen this point discussed so does anyone have some good info that they could share?</p>

<p>The guys at DC Water Jet broke another record at over 202 mph during Speed Week this year (8/08). I think this photo bears some scrutiny for what they have on it compared with what the Aero Testing Revealed. From the prior records on the fender you may or may not be able to see that this car has gone 221 mph in the past... Real speeds verified and registered. It's kind of shocking when you look at the car in the light of what the testing revealed.</p>
<p>I mean, this car is going a good 30 (to <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>50</em></span></strong>!!!) mph faster at Bonneville than our slicked-up 2+2 with a G-Nose and the light covers, blocked radiator inlet, and full belly pan.</p>
<p>They are running this year in F/BFMS, which is 3 liter (F/), Blown (<img src="https://forums.hybridz.org/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt="B)" data-emoticon="" data-src="https://forums.hybridz.org/uploads/emoticons/default_cool.png">, Fuel (F), Modified Sports (MS)...which MS is the class you run in with a 240-280 that has non-stock body mods, after that all the other stuff should be self explanatory in the class.</p>
<p>So take a look at what they are running and comment as you will.</p>

<div>The hood of my '83 turbo has a NACA style scoop, which I _think_ is there to bring in air to keep the brake master cylinder cool. I'm replacing the engine in the next few months, and I'm going to have to re-route the intake to accommodate the intercooler and larger turbo. While I'm at it, I'm planning to seal up gaps around the radiator and intercooler, and doing a bit of tweaking of the airflow into and out of the engine compartment for better cooling and less lift. Anyway, I'm wondering if I can use that naca scoop for the air intake (I'd need to fabricate a filter box), since it's directly above the turbo, and I'm thinking that all the air coming into the engine compartment really should be doing so from the front. Using that naca scoop as the air intake seems like an obvious improvement to me, but the fact that I haven't seen it done this way before by people who actually know what they're doing makes me wonder what I'm missing. Is this a laughably awful idea for some obvious reason that I'm not seeing?</div>

<br><div>Along the same lines, would it be possible to open up the front of the power bulge and use that for the intake? The plumbing would be more complicated for that route, maybe using the hood itself for most of the ducting, but it just looks like that would be the obvious place to put the intake. <p>I finally got around to building a spoiler. Was considering aluminum or Lexan, ended up with 1/4" Lexan, now I think AL might have been the better choice. I made the spoiler adjustable so I can move the supports between 3 holes, 1" apart, and even at the steeper setting an AL spoiler would barely cut any visibility at all. Anyway with some help from FB, I decided to use a piano hinge across the back of the hatch. Could have gone the full width of the car, but sticking with the hatch width is easier from the standpoint of building the thing, so that's what I did. Tom Holt had my trying to cut aluminum rod and thread it to mount the stays. Screwed around with that for an hour or so and said screw it. Went and got some fuel line, pinched the ends and bolted it to the brackets. Much easier, but not as pretty.</p>

<blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote"><div>Motorsport diffusers do not work in the same way as a wing in free stream, nor like a diffuser in a closed duct.  Flow almost “HAS” to be 3-dimensional for them to work as we motorsport engineers make them work.   Combining the diffuser and the floor ahead of it gives the most efficient aerodynamic advice on most racing cars – so they’re worth understanding.  To explain, I need to step back a bit to something simpler.  Don’t worry, it’s not all science – it is the concepts I wish to explain.  This is, though, a reasonably technical post.<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">The diagram above shows the design of a bluff body with a hand sketch of the vortices that roll up along the lower edges (next to the ground).</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> A number of universities have conducted fundamental research, which reveals some of the secrets.  I have been a visiting professor at Southampton University for many years so I will use public domain publications from their work to illustrate my explanation.  Specifically I’d like to thank Professor Xin Zhang for his contribution to these studies but many PhD students were also involved and I played my part too.   There are some stages to this but, if you’re working in aerodynamics on race cars, or you really want to understand so that you can design your own diffusers, it should be worth reading on. </p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">This, let’s say 2-dimensional, representation of a race car diffuser from F1Technical.net (a very good site by the way) just doesn’t do it for me.  There is a lot of truth in it, don’t get me wrong, but it does not explain a lot that’s important to understand.  Now this diagram does correctly predict that there is low pressure under the floor (using the Bernoulli principle).  The hint also with this diagram is that the atmospheric pressure at the trailing edge influences or even dictates the pressure under the floor and there is some truth in that too.  What is not clear from the plot above is the presence of, or reason for, the creation of vortices in race car diffusers. </p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> It is possible to have high rates of expansion in ducted diffusers without stalling the flow in special circumstances, such as when there is high blockage at the end of the diffuser.  This is a very special case though and normally lower angles than 7.5 degrees are needed in rectangular ducts.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> Motorsport underfloor diffusers though can be made to work very well indeed with angles exceeding 20 degrees.   Hence there must be something different going on.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> How did, what we call, diffusers in motorsport come about?   Ground effect car underbodies were developed using end plates and mechanical means to try to bridge the gap between the underbody and the ground.  In some ways the aim was to create easy to understand two-dimensional flow fields, and effectively to seal the suction inside – i.e. prevent ambient air from leaking in.  Often this was done with a sliding skirt: a mechanism that dropped wear-resistant “rubbing strips” mounted on panels down to the ground.   If these panels ever got stuck, the car was quite likely to have an accident as the downforce loss would then be substantial.  In much of the motorsport world these sort of underbodies were limited, first by imposing a ground clearance and then by imposing flat surfaces – and ground bridging devices are, largely speaking, banned.   The obvious thing to try then was to start to expand the air as suddenly as is effective at the very first point along the car allowed by the regulations.  That’s why lots of race teams started to work on diffusers.  In my case, I realised that higher angles, than the rules of thumb would suggest, worked under the car - before I understood why – and hence the investment into university research from the teams I worked with.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> Many of the concepts discussed here for flat-bottomed cars with a trailing edge diffuser also apply to shaped underbodies.  So, even if you are learning about aerodynamics to work on that sort of vehicle, there are conceptual similarities.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> Race car diffusers absolutely need significant airflow to work, and work best with fences which create vortices.   There are other ways of generating force without much flow but these will have to wait as they aren’t as effective.  Fences are set to the same height as the flat floor ahead of the diffuser so that we follow (most) motorsport regulations.  Diffusers are ride height sensitive over part of the ride height range with peak performance being at a relatively low ride height.   Move lower and a dramatic loss of performance and aerodynamic instability results.   A high angle diffuser will have peak (downforce generating) performance at higher ride heights while a lower angle diffuser will perform best at lower ride heights.  For any given set of engineering and atmospheric conditions there will be a range of diffuser angles which all achieve virtually identical peak performance (each at a different height) – as far as downforce is concerned.  Peak performance is also “speed” (Reynolds number) sensitive, just in case you were beginning to think it was all a piece of cake.</p> How it works<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> By starting with a simple bluff body with a diffuser we take away some of the important but distracting interactions such as wings and wheels.   This helps us to understand the fundamentals but be aware that everything is interactive and the presence of wings and wheels does change details of how these devices function.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Without side plates or fences the diffuser works but with less maximum force.  It is, however, interesting to see at what ride heights the diffuser without fences peaks....    A normal diffuser with fences gets most of its downforce from air passing under the choke point at the trailing edge of the flat floor = leading edge of the diffuser.   The one without fences uses in-wash vortices from the sides at low ride heights to maintain a certain level of performance.   Note also that this bluff body diffuser is not very wide which does have an influence on what works at what ride height.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Downforce with and without outboard fences – I will explain the double curve below.  In F1 there has been a trend towards ever higher rear ride heights.  This may explain a small part of that although it is not the main reason.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> So what are the flow mechanisms at play? </p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">When the diffuser is reasonably far from the ground a vortex rolls up on either side of the floor.  This means that additional (reasonably high energy) air is pulled in from the outside of the bluff body.  There is an area of negative pressure created at near the start of the diffuser which starts the process of air rushing in, “attracted” to the low pressure region from directly beside the lower part of the body.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">The flow pattern on the ramp looks fairly simple.  The flow is "symmetrical" at this stage.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">It is clear from the flow visualisation (created with a liquid painted onto the body) that the flow attached to the diffuser underside surface is not simple.   I’ve had many a race mechanic try to tell me the flow is not good already when it looks like this!   Plenty more criticise the design when the flow gets close to its optimum state!   Downforce continues to increase as the ride height is lowered during this phase.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> As the ride height is lowered further, a separation bubble forms but downforce continues to increase.  Of course the flow is not in a totally rock steady state – things are moving around a bit but still relatively stable.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Flow is still pretty much symmetrical for our bluff body case.   Downforce reaches its peak with flow like this.  If you see such flow on your race car, you’ve done a good job – although there are further ways to optimise.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Then at a certain point, as the body is lowered further, one of the two vortices bursts and a sudden reduction in downforce is the result.  Which one bursts first is almost random but will depend on tiny differences (e.g. of dynamic roll).</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">This picture shows a little better just how disturbed the flow has become.  It probably comes from a slightly lower ride height than the previous picture.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">This change of flow state is significant and results in aerodynamic “hysteresis”.   The two vortices hang on fairly well on the way down but, once burst, you have to come back up to a higher ride height than the burst ride to get the flow back into a nearly “symmetrical” state.   The fact that burst and re-creation happen at different heights is what we call the hysteresis.  This is why the plot of downforce showed two lines – they are for lowering and for raising the diffuser.  Clearly drivers will hate the feel of the car if you allow it to get to these areas of performance change.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Continuing to reduce ride height further, leads to reducing energy and attachment of the flow and ultimately to complete separation over the entire width of the inlet of the diffuser. </p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Now the next interesting detail.....</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Here you can see that low angle diffusers don’t reach the same level of performance as those with higher angles (within the range tested).  Once a critical level is reached the higher angle diffusers achieve the same downforce (at different heights).  You can’t extend this to silly angles – we have tried!   What’s interesting is that the highest angle tested has the largest ride height range at max performance.  Those at slightly lower expansion angles fall away more as ride height is increased from the peak (remember 1% is a lot).</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> Now why might that be?  Now I’m not going to give away everything I know but one mechanism is this.  If a body (or a large part of one) has substantial ground clearance then the chances are that there is air below that body which is relatively undisturbed.   If true, then the higher the body, the more air is sitting there not being “used”.  Conventional flow expansion in two dimensions is not going to take advantage of that energy (not “all” of it anyway).</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> I often talk about how much energy remains in the air.   Now the truth is that the car is moving and the air is (relatively) still so what I’m really talking about is relative energy given the velocity of the car.  It’s just easier to think of the air moving for an old man who’s done years of work in a wind tunnel J.   The vortices rolling up under the diffuser take high energy air from the outside of the body and introduce it into the diffuser but they also take high energy air from below the level of the body and mix it into the body of airflow that is expanding under the diffuser.  That’s one mechanism that allows diffusers to remain attached even at high angles of attack.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> In Formula 1 diffusers are expanded both in side view and in plan view.   This is in part because the height limit imposed by regulation is well below the aerodynamic optimum.  There is still a positive impact on pressures and hence forces on the flat part of the floor.  The trend towards running ever higher rear ride heights in Formula 1 will be in part because the entire floor can become a diffuser, in part because the teams have learned how to use vorticity to take advantage of all that air that otherwise passes under the car almost “unused”.</p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> If your diffuser or floor is wide, then there may be energy in the air inboard of the outer vortices which is not used.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">Image shows a section through a hillclimb car which I can show because it is my image.   Even though this is not a conventional diffuser, you can see the vortices on the outboard parts of the floor section.   The colours represent total pressure (energy) and the lines (line integrated convolution for the CFD techies) show airflow directions in the plane of the shot which is a cross section of the car near rear axle centreline.  There is a lot of high energy air here not being “worked” yet and in a way the height won’t allow a single vortex to engage all of that air – a vortex has to be relatively circular in cross section.</p>

<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);">If you add an additional fence or strake (a vortex generator of any design really) in each side of the floor it is possible to roll up two more vortices which take advantage of that airflow energy to create downforce.   This clearly isn’t an optimised design yet but it serves the purpose of showing what might be done. </p>
<p style="font-style:inherit;font-family:inherit;color:rgb(35,38,41);"> If I see high energy air exiting the floor of the car (at the most critical low ride heights), I look to find a way of using it.  So, hopefully, this explains what fences in the middle of a diffuser do (some part of their function in any case).</p>

<div>There seems to be quite a few posts about ducting the front air dam, but not many have an intercooler. I always saw pictures of a flat sheet going to the core support, and thus making it pretty easy to do. Since I have an oil cooler, and a pretty large intercooler, I knew this wasn't going to be a simple home depot run...</div>

<p>After going back and forth, and not wanting to weld up new end tanks/intercooler piping I was left with the challenge of working around my intercooler. I had a few requirements of ensuring I fully blocked off air from escaping and going directly under the car, and ensuring all the intercooler saw air. I also wanted a small portion of the air to bypass the intercooler, to go straight into the radiator. I came up with the below...</p>

<p>I started with a large 24x24 sheet from home depot, and really only ended up using 2/3rds of it. From the pictures below, you can see my main goal was to keep as much of the metal as I could, and fill in the rest with fiberglass. So what I really made was a skeleton shell out of the metal sheet. I followed the contour of the core support diagonals, and used cardboard to make the angles.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Yes, I know there are drips, and such, but my intercooler almost rests on those areas so I let them be. All the areas which are visible, saw a small coat of bondo. This also ensured that this mated perfectly with my air dam. I let the pictures speak for themselves, and please feel free to reach out with questions.</p>

<p>As far as holding this thing in place... You see a stud in the middle of the duct; this pretty much holds it firmly in place. Since I fiberglassed it on the car, it molded/contoured it self in place. I pretty much sat there alone. There were four holes on the core support, which I used plastic push clips to further hold it in place. You see that there are some holes drilled and empty for them.</p>

<p>I am not done with the front end; it will be getting blocked off with a large sheet of ABS. This will further channel the air, but wanted to post small updates as they came. A rear diffusor with pics is also coming as well...</p>

<p>I'm trying to improve on the aerodynamics of my Z.  I've deleted the size markers lights, antenna, side view mirrors (can get away without them in my area) and wipers (sunny day only car).  I switched to a vented hood in the hopes of extracting some of that high pressure from the engine bay at speed.  Now, my question is: Do people tie-in the MSA front spoiler to the radiator area?  The Z's around my area just leave it open, which looks strange to me.  It's my sense that it would be more effective to duct it to the radiator.  Also, I would like to block off the sides of the duct too since that area of the front really doesn't add to the engine cooling so I see no need for it to pass through the front.  I want to make the sheets out of carbon fiber.  I mocked up some templates out of card board to see how it looks.  Thoughts? </p>

<p>Im thinking about using some sort of plastic, imagine something like the garden edging stuff so it could actually scrape the road. It would be flexible enough to not snap off but stiff enough to actually redirect air. It would go all the way across the car in a arc, wheel to wheel with the middle further forward.</p>

<p>- I originally planned on just having a filter direcly on my holset but im thinking of incorporating an intake duct that will scoop up cold air from under the car. If you can imagine the area behind the radiator and in front of the sway bar, thats where the duct would be. Id get alot cooler air and a little bit of a "ram" affect. Should be good for 50hp, assuming the ducting is chrome as well. haha</p>

<p>- Lasty it comes to my primary question, regarding venting the engine bay. I relocated my battery so now both areas under the inspection lids are open. I have a vented hood already and was considering modifying my inspection lids to have a vent. Im not sure how much venting it takes to avoid air going out of the bottom of the engine bay but I suppose too much isnt bad. haha Given that, I was looking into how Id setup fender vents. </p>

<p>There are a few factors that come into play. I dont have fender liners so the battery tray area is directly open to the fender well. If I just install a vent on each side of the engine bay where it just vents to the fender *WELL* would that be effective? With my other modifications wouldnt the fender wells likely be a lower pressure area? Second option is to actually vent from the engine bay through a closed duct and actually out the fender, completely bypass the fender well and vent air to the outside of the car. I was even thinking about the possibility of running two small fans in the ducts to help evacuate air even at low speeds.</p>

<p>Of course all of this will be paired with equal attention to the back although I havent considered what Ill do as much. For now its just VG, and hopefully a SDI 5.25 inch spoiler.</p>

Its worth pointing out that Ive got a turbo charged car with a relatively good sized intercooler (Isuzu npr) to work around up there that limits my room a bit.  Its also worth pointing out I lack any respectable fabrication skills, and was looking for a solution that would let me do this a bit easier (rather than try to muck around with trying to mock up/measure/cut/trim/ponder over doing cardboard templates).  I think I came up with a solution, and would love share it to get some feedback from others on here- And if its a decent idea, maybe itll help some others muster up the courage to do it themselves.<br><br>My idea?  <strong>Chicken wire</strong>!  Laugh, but afterwards hear me out.<br><br>This stuff is stupidly cheap (50 square feet was 10 bucks from lowes, and for those that dont have them- this is the equivalent of home depot), light, and stupidly easy for me to work with. Take a section of it large enough to cover the area in question, and start playing with it.  Because its metal you simply bend/twist/wrap it into place, and it keeps its shape.  Dont like how that sits there?  Simply bend it another direction. And because its an open grid, not only can you easily see *everything* thats in the way at all times, its painfully simple to "deal" with whats obstructing you.  Oh look, theres a bracket in the way? <p>With another wind tunnel test approaching it might be helpful to throw out some ideas that the guys can test; this thread will provide a place to share those ideas.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I've had a couple ideas rolling around in the back of my brain for a while, things like splitters with airdams on the leading edge, trying to increase airspeed on a flat floor, etc. All have more to do with the underside of the car.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Here are my ideas: </p>
<p>1. Splitter with airdam on the leading edge. I think this will work better for autox types of situations where the speed differential of the air going under the splitter won't be as significant. Since the windtunnel air speeds are pretty low where you guys are going, I think this would be a good spot to test the theory. I think Cameron actually has this setup so that all he has to do is bolt it on. Not sure if he will be part of this though. This was recently tested in Race Car Engineering on a Porsche, but the airdam they used was still 3-4 inches off the ground and not surprisingly it produced worse results than the splitter alone. I'd like to see it tried with an airdam 1-2 inches off the ground. A variation would be adding dams to the sides of the splitter. This could be fairly easily tested by taping a cardboard strip to the edge of a splitter, with some triangular cardboard braces on the backside to keep it from folding under pressure.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>2. Splitter with diffuser. The NASCAR COT's used a diffuser after their splitters. This diffuser was about as simple as it gets. It was just a piece of aluminum mounted at an upward angle at the end of their splitter. Their splitters were very short, and the diffusers were too. If there is room, it would be interesting to try a 12 or 18 inch long piece of cardboard at the back of the splitter, just tape to the splitter and then tilt up towards the rear. The COT had a very rough bottom so you wouldn't think that a diffuser would work, but they were talking about 80 lbs of downforce difference based on the angle of the diffuser in a video I watched. Variations on the angle of the diffuser could be checked.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>3. Ground effects. It's really tough to do an aero bottom on a Z because of exhaust and drivetrain clearance, but it might be possible for the guys with larger diameter wheels to do it, particularly if you have very stiff springs. I know 74_5.0L_Z is running at about 2.75" from the bottom of the front crossmember to the ground and not bottoming with spring rates in the 400s IIRC, so if you have 5 or 6 inches to the lowest hanging piece, you could drop a floor down a few inches and still not scrape. Flat bottoms are usually mandated by rules, but aren't the best option. Contoured floors are better and obviously more difficult to fabricate.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>3a. Contoured floor. Splitter with diffuser into a second venturi into a rear diffuser. Basically we're talking about aping a LeMans car, mulsannescorner.com has plenty on this if someone wants to try it.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>3b. Flat floor. Much easier to make is the pro here, and theoretically much better than the rough bottom with the drivetrain and exhaust hanging down. It would be awesome just to test the flat floor/diffuser setup, but I have a couple variations. The idea behind the contoured floor is that you're creating a venturi by getting the floor closer to the ground and narrowing the opening for airflow, causing the air to speed up. If you have a flat floor, what is to prevent someone from using fences on the bottom to narrow the airflow passage on the bottom of the car and get the same effect? Essentially I'm talking about more airdam material, and making a venturi shape on the bottom of the flat floor. This could be tested with aluminum 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/16 thick angle (easy to bend to shape) double sided taped to the floor and then the cardboard fences could be taped to the angle. A further variation would be to add air from in front of the rear tires to the venturi. I think there would be a decent amount of airflow to tap at that spot, particularly if there were dams pushing air out to the side of the car behind the front wheels, as I know Mike Kelly and others either have or were planning to have.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>All of the above can be tested pretty cheaply and easily. These drawings are not to any scale or anything, but I think they might help to conceptualize the overall ideas. Red or blue is a fence that could be tested with cardboard and actually be put on the car with airdam material (plastic lawn edging is what I would use).</p>
<p> </p>
<p>4. Spoiler/wing combos. It is pretty well known that a spoiler and wing can be more effective than a spoiler or a wing alone, but I don't think there is a hard fast rule about what size spoiler makes the best result, so that could be tried, in particular testing the amount of increase in AoA on the wing before you get separation on the bottom side with and without the spoiler would be helpful. This would probably be useful only on the car that was tested, but if my car were going in there I would definitely want to do this test.</p>

<p>5. Front fender contour. I doubt anyone will do this, but I'd like to see a Z with the front fenders cut and folded in behind the wheel to the wheel well, imitating what you seen in Spec Racer Fords, Can Am cars, etc. It's not a new idea and we know it works, but I'd like to see what the result is. Would require cutting up a set of fenders and making a fender liner so that air didn't get past the opening and trapped in the back of the fender, but fenders could be grossly cut and cardboard used to push in behind the wheel and make a crude fender liner as well.<br> </p>

<p>7. CFD. Anyone ever considered putting this money into a CFD model? Not sure how much that costs to do, but if you had a CFD model, you could test infinite variations without going back to the tunnel.</p>

<p>In this video Leno explained the bezels in the hood for this car were originally vents until the marketing people got a hold of it. Seems the Stingray had a nasty habit of getting light in the nose around 100 mph. (Sound familiar?)</p>
