I’m working through a starter‑circuit issue on my early 260Z and wanted to document everything I’ve done so far to bypass the seatbelt interlock system. I’ve followed the factory service bulletin step‑by‑step, but I’m still running into problems and hoping the electrical experts here can help me figure out what I’m missing.

What I’ve Done So Far (Following the Nissan Service Bulletin)

• Disconnected the seatbelt control module under the dash
Removed all three harness plugs from the module.
• Unplugged and removed the wiring distribution block on the firewall
This is the multi‑connector block tied into the interlock logic.
• Removed the red reset button on the passenger fender
Pulled both connectors and jumped the Black/Yellow (start signal) to the Yellow (starter output) per the bulletin.

Result:
Even with the entire interlock system removed and bypassed, I still hear a click under the passenger‑side dash when turning the key. Also, when trying to start, the starter solenoid spins but the starter doesn’t engage.

Second Approach: Installed a 4‑Prong Starter Relay

Since the jumper bypass didn’t solve it, I tried a more direct method:

• Removed the jumper at the reset switch.
• Installed a 4‑prong relay on the firewall.
• Wired it as follows:• Pin 30: Direct feed from the battery positive.
• Pin 85: Trigger wire tapped from the Black/Yellow ignition START wire just below the ignition switch plug. Clean start signal.
• Pin 87: Dedicated wire straight to the starter solenoid spade.
• Pin 86: Grounded to the firewall.

Result:
The car does crank with the direct battery feed.
But a new issue appeared:

When I turn the key back to ON after START, the starter continues to crank nonstop. The only way to stop it is to disconnect the battery cable.

I tried a relay with a resistor thinking the solenoid might be back‑feeding the relay coil, but the problem persists.

Where I’m Stuck

I’m not an electronics expert on the 260Z, but I’ve done plenty of wiring work on 60’s cars. I’ve searched all over the web and found bits and pieces of info, but nothing that fully explains what’s happening here.

At this point I’ve:

• Removed the entire seatbelt interlock system
• Bypassed the START circuit per the bulletin
• Tried a modern relay setup
• Still have a mystery click under the dash
• And now have a starter backfeed issue where the relay won’t release

I’m clearly missing something in the early‑260Z wiring logic, possibly a hidden splice or secondary circuit feeding the START wire.

I’m reaching out to the experts here who have more experience with these cars. Any guidance, diagrams, or known trouble spots would be greatly appreciated. I’m stumped and would love to get this resolved.

This is my cars long journey...

I bought the car site unseen at an auction. Yeah I know, not the greatest idea but I got a good deal on the car. I do know from a dealer I saw the car at a while back that the frame rails might have some rust spots but the seller listed the car as "free from rust and structural damage". Luckily the seller won't get his money until we bother agree the car is as advertised so I can still low-ball the shit out of hem. (The seller was bragging to the dealer how he would make a massive payday trough the auctions the dealer told me. But guess what, he lost money on it)

My plans for the car are to just get it road worthy for now and then upgrading it over time. I was thinking about rear disk brakes, ITB's with new engine management and some carbon fiber body parts like the hood, fender flares, spoiler and aero bumper. After the cosmetic upgrades I'll be painting the car Nissan Midnight Blue as I just love the color. And yes the car is loosely inspired by the anime Wangan Midnight I saw when I was a kid. Call me a week but it was my first interaction with the S30 chassis and I loved them ever since.

Not a new Z owner, but definitely new to this level of project. Well aware of the amount of time/money this resto-mod will take and that's fine with me. I'm using it as a learning experience. Car is in essentially scrap state, but I'll do my best to bring her back regardless.

Damage is mostly to the tail light/rear panel, floor pans (missing), and kick panels (rusted through). Trunk/spare tire cutout are totally missing as well, although that can just be fabricated from a sheet of 18-gauge. The frame rails/supports actually look solid, but I'll probably replace absolutely everything I can anyways from the suspension up. Budget is whatever I want it to be. Fenders, doors, and rear hatch are also more than likely a total wash; again. They can be replaced pretty easily. My only question now is how bad is the rust inside the roof? Time will tell.

Plan for the car right now is to do an L24-Turbo build; however I've never converted one before and only done carb work. Would like some guidance on where to start for a turbo build. (Fuel injection, etc) Although that is a long, LONG way down the road after extensive body work. She is definitely in for an acid dip to find out what's usable and what's not. 

Her interior is totally gutted; only thing we have to work with is gauges and half a dash. Rough work ahead indeed, but I am dedicated to saving this one. Only thing I'm really worried about is the electrical, as I'm unfamiliar with everything required for electronic ignition, and EFI setups in Z's. 

More money than sense indeed on this one; but again. Going for it anyway. She seems to be a Series III with an 8/72 build date. 

Any support or advice is welcome. (Other than "just scrap it")

The car: 1978 280z, can't even call it a roller since it has no rear end. 

Long term plans include engine swap from a 81 280zx L28ET, 5 speed trans swap, suspension upgrade, and new cooling system among a few other upgrades to improve reliability and modernize the car a bit. I'm looking forward to posting some progress updates here and learning from the other members on the forum to make this build happen.

My name is Matt, based in the UK with a 1972 240z that I picked up over the summer (originally a US car).  The plan is to keep the L24 but I've already started the changes (Triple Webers, Camshaft, Exhaust), and going for a fairly standard 'ZG' look aesthetically with flares, air dam etc, but I've gone with a few Skillard parts as well.  15"x10.5" Watanabes have been ordered from Japan but they've been delayed until Jan 2022 so I'm spending the winter fitting all the other bits and hopefully getting it all ready for next summer.

I'm looking forward to learning plenty of things from the forum which can hopefully help with my build.

We ended up getting divorced back in 2019 and I really regret selling it. The car had so much potential. I really miss that 78, I was so hopeful that I could turn it around and make it my dream car. This is back in the day when Zs were still cheap. 

I recently got a Miata and as great as the car is (mine is bone stock and was adult owned with full records so not beat to hell), but it's just not the same. Hopefully I can pick one up eventually, but I think I'll be priced out if I don't get one in the next 3-5 years. What I could get for 2-5k is 10k now, a 10k car is 20k now. It makes sense, it's just the market and they're getting rarer and rarer. I just never feel "right" unless I'm driving a Z, I used to think this was a boomer thing (no offense) where you would think back at the good times with your old cars. But seriously, the happiest I've ever been is in a Z even though my Miata is just as fun to drive. There is just something about the Z cars that just has so much soul.

I read a guide from hybridz, it mentioned to get a 1981-83 280zx, but I only managed to find a 280zx 1978,i know they are both l28et but just wondering if there is any difference between the 1978 vs 1981 280zx l28et. As he made it sound like the 1981-83 280zx is more preferable? 

I've tried searching for such info but couldn't find any. If this question has already been answered, I apologise in advance

I grew up on Datsun's.  My brothers had Roadsters and 510's, my Dad had a Roadster in addition to a '76 280Z 2+2 he bought new.  It ended up being mine for 7 years before he got it back, restored it, and kept it for many years before a family friend got it.

I sold my modified 1972 510 2-door.  I worked on about 25 years ago.  I screwed up more than I fixed....young and had to learn how to do things.

So, I just bought a 1972 240Z Automatic on eBay.  It is enroute to me.

I am also a big Mustang fan.  I have a 2001 Mustang GT I bought new that is a garage queen.  It is Supercharged and etc.  Real nice car.  This is my "classic" to keep with it.

If I can be of any help I will.  I appreciate in advance any help any of you can provide.
