had a rule in place permitting a sniffer only test for cars with classic insurance.

 

That solace dissipated quickly today as shop after shop and tech after tech

told that there is no such policy/rule.  I figured it would be a simple matter of

looking up the reg so I could then have a shop confirm it, but so far have not

been able to locate more than excerpts of the rule without citation. 

 

So it would be great if anyone knows of a shop actually familiar with the

rules, or if anyone is aware of the exact regulation that includes the exemption.

So right now I'm looking to buy a 280zx, and I found a 1983 280zx turbo that I would like to buy. However, the car was originally bought in a Colorado dealership in 83 and hasn't been registered in California, where I live. So I'll have to get the car to pass California smog. What I'm wondering is what differences there are between California and non-California 280zx's, and whether or not you think I stand a chance at passing smog without going through lots of modifications.

The cat that I’m supposed to use is the Magnaflow 36304 that has 2" dia inlet and outlets. But the problem is back in the day, I increased my pipes to 2.50" dia pipes. I want to use the Magnaflow 36026 cat , which has a 2.5" dia inlet and outlet. my question is, do I have to use the 36304 cat (that’s what’s suppose to be on my car) or can I use the 36026 cat with the larger inlet and outlet that will mate with my existing pipes?

The one I got with the motor is a Standard Motor Products reman unit, the sticker is scratched and the only visible number is MF0412S ... I looked it up online there's one on rock auto MF0412 that is the only replacement AFM I can find for the turbo motor. 
It seems this part never had a CARB exemption...  Can't find any information from the manufacturer either. 

It seems the only CA-legal MAF is one with a NISSAN part number on it, as none of the aftermarket have EO exemption for them. 

 

I have a source for a good Nissan one, just wanted to start discussion on this. 

 

When I took it to the BAR ref last year to check everything he said it was all OK no problem ... I guess they're getting even more strict with smog lol.
And it seems my cat has been scraping on the ground and the EO number is rubbed off.  Have to get a new CAT ???
I think I'm going to take the car back to skyline & have the REF pass it. 


Sucks cause my car passes emissions just fine and runs exactly like stock.  (just ignore the disconnected boost controller over there)
