  1. That would be an awesome project, but. . .

I am working part time, going to school full time, and don't have a garage. With all this rain we have been having I haven't even been able to start pulling the head off, which is no small project.

If I did have a garage it would change things immensely, after sundown work grinds to a halt. Really limits productivity :( Not to mention seeing all those LT1 and LS1 Camaros and Firebirds on craigslist for pretty slick deals. In the end though it would cost several grand more than I am able to put into it right now, but in a few years with an engineering degree situations will be different.

  2. Don't exclude the E36 BMW chassis. Parts are pretty cheap and its the best chassis/car made in the 1990s. Amazingly capable on the race track.

Not to mention they are pretty affordable 2nd hand. Especially when the head gasket goes, got myself a '93 4-door auto for $300. Even if the motor is toast, well, something will be put in there :burnout:

The BMW tool to get the head bolts out is only ~$50, but who knows, it seems to be just a torx bit. Have to try welding and 'adapting' something less expensive first.

  3. Why yes, so do I, but it really isn't that fun down here with our draconian smog laws in California. I am not sure if I can put M3 cams in the head, since it is a non-Vanos one. Took one look at M3 heads, and then ran the other way :rolleyesg.

One nice omission on that car is Vanos. After looking at the steps to remove and install such a system, I am really happy that my car doesn't have it. The mechanisms also fail, sticking at a particular advancement, bet that is great for the motor.

Oh yes, forget things when my coffee is still kicking in. Paid $300 for it :D

  4. After the liquid glass solution is ran through the motor, the motor is toast, and the cars head to a scrap yard. You can go to the yard and buy the car with the burnt motor and fix it back for pennies on the dollar. You can google it to find more info, there is a thread diesel garage where a guy is fixing a cash for clunkers corvette, I will dig it up.

Thread on that 'Vette? Any details at all on how to purchase a Clunker'ed car from a junk yard and get it re-titled?

  5. Got this '86 325E a month ago. Around 250,000 miles, odometer is broken, but the transmission still shifts crisply and the motor pulls great.

What service manual is recommended? Bentley or Chiltons? I have access to alldatapro.com, which is really handy, but like to have a book on hand. Get to do the water pump and consequentially the timing belt as well.

Also, Kragen parts are good enough, right? Or do I need to got to a special BMW parts house?

  6. Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports are my two favorite mags.....I keep all of them and refer to them sometimes. They're not too expensive either....there are more expensive mags out there that don't give you half of what these do.

    Greg

I have a subscription to GRM, how does Classic Motorsports compare? More focused on classics I presume, but do they keep the DIY and budget mindful aspect? And how do they define classic? British and Datsun I guess, but Detroit?

Just got a '86 325E and now must go find that article on the 200x challenge team who turbo'ed one.

  7. I believe there is some debris clogging my clutch hardline. Great pressure at the master cylinder, but almost none at the end of the hardline.

I would prefer not spending more money on a new hardline, how can I clear it out? Took apart the master cylinder, tons of junk in the cylinder. Going to clean it out, see if it still seals up proper.

  8. Got most everything working on my '71 510 that was sitting for several years, except the clutch. At the master clutch cylinder there is good, high pressure, but at the end of the hard line there is almost no pressure. Have flushed plenty of new DOT 3 through, but no change. Took off the master and there was some nasty junk in it.

I have checked the hard line for any kinks or bends that might hurt flow, so it seems that it is clogged somewhere. How can I flush out any debris? Air compressor?

Thanks!! Great to hear it run finally, L20B, Cannon intake, Webber, and a mean Crane cam in it :burnout:

  9. How many people are you planning to pack in the car? Luggage? Load up a car with 3 or 4 people and their luggage, and I have found 4 bangers to struggle accelerating or going up hills, even city driving becomes much more sluggish. Might want to consider a 6 cylinder, just saying.
