  1. S30trbo Bought two row BHJ damper with triggerwheel bolted on front. Brian Maloney made up a 1/2 inch thick aluminum mag sensor mount for me at his shop in Martinsville, Va. Mount extended from bolt holes originally designed for airpump on driver's side.......no vibration........worked fine.....nice piece. Regards, John T.
  2. 240 ZIP Have 72 240 with L28. Compression approximately 9.7 cr. Ztherapy carb rebuild.......SM needles. DIS......maximum advance 35 degrees. 6 into 1 MSA headers......2.5 inch exhaust system. Always thought S.U. 1.75 inch carbs too small to pass enough air to produce reasonable hp. from L28 engine..........until I remembered that my 1953 Jaguar XK120 had a 3.4 liter engine with 1.75 SU carbs.....and it performed pretty well. Most of my driving is done near sea level....so SM needles may not be appropriate for your setup.....would suggest needles from earliest 240s as they are slightly richer...than those for the 72 model. Regarding my car performance.... it turns right up past 7000 revs very easily......my thought that the two factors that contributed most are the Electromotive DIS. and the Ztherapy work on the throttle shafts to prevent leaks. Regards. John Turner
  3. 240zip Modification I made was to remove the air intake snout and weld in a 3 inch tube slightly flattened to match a/c front curve and width. Had to enlarge lower driver side hole to allow for the 3 inch flex hose to front of radiator bulkhead.......as I wanted to keep vent air. Led flex hose to central location just below top radiator mount. This set up allows you to route cold air either thru the cone type filter in front of radiator.......or to just use flex hose for intake air and use canister air element. Incidentally when I was running fuel injection.......I routed hose to my weber big throat. My 240 runs very sweetly and breathes very well at higher revs.......so I guess what I've done makes some kind of sense. Regards, John Turner
  4. Inline6..... If you want someone who truly knows his beans about cylinder head and manifold porting I would like to recommend to you Brian Maloney. I've known Brian for more than 20 years and he is very knowledgeable in the field having worked primarily on Ford, Dodge and Toyota NASCAR race engines. He also has his own independent shop.......Maloney Competition Porting in Martinsville,Va. Brian has worked on L series engines, and did great work on my 240z. Give him a call at 276-252-8676. Feel free to use my name if you wish. Regards, John Turner
  5. research Vintage Performance on web.......they're utilizing Mikuni HSR motorcycle carbs as Skinner's Union replacement and more. If my SU's were not working so well(Z Therapy rebuilds). I'd be interested. Regards, John T.
  6. IIn my mind Griffin has a good rep. Regards, John T.
  7. have used 16 pound stant cap on my griffin radiator for the past 12 years with no heating problems on street or track. Regards, john turner
  8. Have Experienced 240z Stub Axle Breakage At Spline Base. In The Shop Where I Worked, We Always Used An Impact Wrench On Stub Axle Nut Removal. Wonder Whether Such Use Could Have Contributed To The Failure. Thoughts?? Jrt
  9. am thinking of installing a 2jzge engine in my 72z. curious as to whether john c's motor mount is low enough to mount na engine without hood interferance problem???? love my z....have great engine.....don't want turbo......really like the idea of more calm power. comments.....thanks, john t..
  10. Have used both Redline MTL, and MTL 90 in my s30 5-speeds. Had fluid leakage problems with MTL when I had never had the problem with conventional gear oils, or for that matter MTL 90. The oil loss led to. I believe, premature bearing failure.......took me two transmission rebuilds to figure the problem out. Painful to think about being so slow on the uptake. Am currently using MTL 90 on my extended mileage transmission........and swear by it.....not at it. Regards, John T.
  11. Electric Fuel Pump In Picture Appears To Be Bendix.....currently Manufactured By Purolater As "facet" Pumps. Have Used Both The Lower Pressure And 7 Lb Pumps(with Holley Fpr) In My Z To Feed Su Carbs. Have Also Used Holley Pumps....and Others As Well, And The Facet Units Are Tops In My Experience. John T.
  12. Have owned my 240z for 18 1/2 years........have driven coast to coast 13 times.......auto-crossed it approximately 20 times or so, and have about 10 time trials (Willow Springs, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow etc.) on the pedigree. About 500,000 miles are on the clock and I drive it every day. I do about 90% of my own maintenance and have up-graded many of the systems over the years. Never have had a finer car......quite primitive in many ways when compared to the big-buck moderns........but it is'nt any slouch in the performance department. I'll probably still be driving it......when the Mercedes and the M-3s have made acquaintance with the "CRUSHER". John Turner
  13. My bus is a 1972 240Z with a 2.8 litre S.U. carbed engine and electronic ignition. Have more than 500,000 miles ....on the chassis. Three months ago I made a 3000 mile round trip from New Bern, N.C. to Lewiston, Idaho. Trips were the 12th and 13th times I have traveled across the good old US of A in this same car. Only problem I ever experienced on these journeys was when a high pressure fuel pump went duff during a peiod of time when I had an aftermarket motor management system in the car. In my opinion......a well maintained early Z....is extremely reliable........particularly so when equipped with S.U.s. I've owned this car for 18 years, and I drive it every day. Best, John Turner
  14. have 72 240 with this set-up......when initialling same could'nt get driver's side cv shaft in at all. talked to Ross C. and he assured me that it would work. finally had to dismount inner arm brackets and swing the whole suspension forward to get it in. once installed .....no problemo. good luck with yours.
