  1. I think it was one of the bushings on the outside of the rear control arm. I don't remember too well, I'm reaching...
  2. What happened with one of my stock rear bushings ( the one with the metal tube in the middle), was that through wear and tear, the rubber got shaved down to the metal part. This led to a lower and rougher ride. Maybe you have something similiar?
  3. No alternator would keep the system from functioning as a whole. ( I believe). All things have to be working in order for the ECU to send power to the fuel pump. My experience is that one cannot just get one thing to work in this system independently of another. Conversely, if one thing is malfunctioning, the whole system will not function. They all have to be functioning in order for the system to work...
  4. The thing I learned about EFI management in my Z is that it is a closed system. All components have to be there for it to work.
  5. A fuel injected Z with no alternator will not run. At least mine did not. What happened was, I upgraded to an '86 Maxima internal voltage regulator model that cranked out 90 amps. It was also a single wire app. I ran the power wire through the fusible link like stock but kept frying links. I ran it directly but it would not start. One of the wires in the fusible link ( I forget which one, white with red stripe) signals the EFI or something. I spliced it in to the four gauge power wire I am now using and it works fine...
  6. Did you check your sway bar mount on that side, where it bolts to the frame? Sometimes the weld breaks and the sumbitch vibrates. At least that is what happened to me. _________________________________ '76 280z
  7. The wire that connects to should be in the same wire bundle as where the wire going out of the resistor reenters the bundle, only slightly behind it (towards the ECU)...I guess look for a single black wire, maybe the terminal fell off or something...
  8. Dude, I would find out where that connets to because I had that same thing in my '76 280z. I didn't think I needed it and I took it out. Lo and behold the car would not start. I put it back in and it started. Someone told me it was some kind of starter resistor or something. Of course I could be wrong...
  9. So I don't violate any rules, I have another fixit issue; my rearend. There is a staccato rhythm emanating from the rear gear housing and I have noticed a decrease in performance from the differential (I think). I'll be traversing an uneven concrete surface and as the rear axle bounces, the car will semi- lurch towards the left. My first step is to replace the struts as they are perhaps overdue for replacement. There is also a distinctive clunk as I shift into gears. Sometimes. I don't know if the two are related. The tranny is six months on the rebuild. As far as I know the rear end and attendent components have never been replaced in 30+ years...Just springs and bushings.
  10. You banned yourself for making an attack on yourself? Heehee, I like you...
  11. Thanks... _________________________________________________________________ 1976 280z- Semi bone stock. My identity is not entangled with a vehicle particularly one with as finite a life as one with with an internal combustion engine. Por ejemplo, those bozos into riding motorcycles and their lifestyle of "freedom" and all the fancy costuming that entails are going to look pretty funny riding bicycles when they no longer have access to the cheap fuel which their "freedom" rests firmly upon...
  12. I make it a point not to get argumentative with anyone online because; Arguing online is like two retards running a competitive race, One may win but he is still retarded...
  13. Hey, I was just going by what someone else told me. Someone I paid for goods and services. Which leads me to my fun little quote at the end of my post: "Just because I pay someone to do a job, it doesn't necessarily mean that they know what they are doing..."
  14. So I went over to the tire shop where I had purchased my tires and asked them to dynamically balance them. This was the shop that originally supposedly balanced them. But then I do not remember seeing any sticky weights on the front of the rim like had been done in the past. Free of charge. Problem solved. Another great thing about my Z: 80 % of the time when I am thinking it is something dire and obscurely wrong, it is usually something much simpler. Thanks again for clarifying with words and diagrams the different kinds of wheel balancing...
  15. I was using harmonic balancer as an example meaning that these Z's seem to be so well engineered that some things that fail after thirty years can cause alot of trouble and they can be such an easy repair. I will definitely research the tire balancing more as I have free balancing. The pinion seems to have over .3 mm of play which is what the service manual recommends as a cut off point. I measured this with a cursory twist though, seemed to be awful loose, how much play should there be??? Should I be able to move the pinion with my hand while the car is stationary on the ground???
  16. By everything being "fine", I mean that a mechanic went over it and he found nothing of a problem enough to charge me for... So everything really is just "fine"... One thing I did neglect to mention is that I am running wider rims. They are balanced as I know enough to get that fixed at the first sign of a problem. The tires are new as well. There is something wrong because I have run it in its' current set up with no shimmy before. My current thinking is that it is something really esoteric, i.e. once in a lifetime replacement like the harmonic balancer... According to the service manual it could be something in the steering box...
  17. I could have sworn I wrote that the steering rack components and bearings are fine. The steering coupler is fine, and so is the alignment...
  18. Right at about 40 mph I have this insane wheel shimmy and above and below that it pretty much disappears. The steering rack components have been gone over and they are nice and tight. The axle bearings were just repacked and they are fine. My wheels are balanced, and I just replaced the old tension rod bushings. If anything this has made the problem worse. What could it be??
  19. Funny thing, While perusing for sale posts on HybridZ, it appears that there are always a ton of responses, but they always seem to be about anything other than buying; " great (insert product name), or " I wish I had the money ", or " Will you trade? ". I can just picture the sellers saying to themselves, " Does anyone buy anything anymore? "...
  20. Yeah, it is the pulley where the fan clutch used to be.. I have one other thing; unusual tire wear... I have 265/50 15's in the rear of my Z. They are on 8 inch wide rims. The last three sets I have had wear in the middle like they are overinflated (which is not the case) and they only last for like 15,000 miles. Too much tire? Wrong size? I think I am going down to 225/ 60 15's. Thanks...
