  1. I wanted to post a Thank You to all those who have contributed their expertise about trouble shooting the Dead Light Syndrome on Z Cars. You know who you are. I'll share my experience - Hopefully it will help someone else. I have gradually been losing electrical component functions. Last week she stopped charging while cruising around. Voltage gauge gradually dropped to 10-8-6 volts.. Thankfully I have an Optima Yellow top and was able to limp back to the shop. This car has voltage regulator separate from the alternator, under the fusible link/beer can holder. With battery disconnected, I was able to confirm alternator was not charging - by cleaning the 7pin connector at the regulator - 1 pin showed only minor corrosion; This was enough to regain charging, and has been charging/starting since. I regained tach/gauges also. Now, on to the dead headlights + hi beam indicator / exterior signals + dash indicators / emergency flashers & brake lights - So, undrivable. Following the suggested troubleshooting recommendations in the forum, I confirmed continuity and cleaned all fusible links and fuses, all good - some minor overheating indicated on front right (heaviest) fusible link. Test light confirmed good power at all fusible links and fuses except the headlight fuses. I moved on to checking grounds, dremmel wire brushed license plate and headlight ground connections, did not look too great- paint from body shop on connectors, especially at the rear, reconnected with some dielectric grease. Then on to the flasher unit above hood release, found that the 2pin L-Shaped plug had become disconnected. On to headlight combination switch, removed shroud, (this reminds me of the Japanese sense of humor - 6 screws - 4 different types / take note of what goes where) Found out why my horn doesn't work - broken plastic connector on thin brass brass horn connector. Taped it up, out of the way. Searched around for loose ground, or other obvious issues - none seen. Sprayed some Deoxit chem spray around the hi-beam lever, turn signal cancel mechanism, and in and around the little circuit board in the pictures below... As I was test probing for power around the Green - Red & White Red Wires attached to it, and moving hi-beam lever, cycling on/off the headlights VIOLA!?!!?!? On came my Headlights, Low&Hi Beams! & Signals!! Interior indicators too!? So with this progress, I remember reading that the 4 tabs on this little box can be carefully straightened upwards to access the parts inside. So with battery once again disconnected, I opened it up to find an old school switch mechanism, surprisingly with NO visible corrosion or signs or arcing or overheating. Rotating the headlight switch moves two little nipple like pieces - I thought i would run a bit of sandclothe over them (don't do this) I thought I had broken the little tit off! But then realized that they are little caps, supported by tiny little springs. I very slightly pulled on the springs to provide a bit more pressure on the little brass contact levers also contained within, sprayed some more Deoxit around and cleaned all the parts with a cuetip. Reattached the small brass tabs - I know - long winded // Really just a sincere Thank You for all the guidance. PS: Now my Volt gauge doesn't work. LOL - any ideas???
  2. One of my headlights went out and I figure its a good time to go ahead and upgrade them. I'm looking at these HELLA headlights and these HIDs. Does anyone know if I'd need to upgrade the headlight harness with either of these? Has anyone had any experience with these?

Need a 1973 headlight combo switch, im in nj so can drive or factor that for shipping Mine crapped out, i tried cleaning that little box with the tabs that controls the headlights and tail lights but the issues was with those little caps that cover the springs in the mechanism they were totally messed up and that whole box is kind of dead.... looking for either entire assembly or just the little headlight box with the rocker switches and those 2 springs with the little caps. Attached a pic of the box and the little caps over the springs, let me know what you have! car isnt really entirely drivable with out this! thank you!
  4. I was changing the headlights in my 78 280Z tonight and I managed to snap 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the headlight in (the ones with the flat head). Can someone please tell me the size, length, and pitch of these bolts so I can buy replacements? I also need to get the remaining bolts out. I am thinking pliers, because they protrude on the other side, but would a small easy-out be a better idea? Thanks!

  7. I want to swap in some H4 lights and add LED bulbs. I see many types and cooling device configurations of led bulbs available, has anyone tried them? What mods were necessary? Results? IF YOU CAN PLEASE, mention the brand /type bulb you used. Thanks in advance!
  8. UPDATE: After completing the install my alternator isn't charging the battery. Please see the post at the bottom of the page So I have a '75 280z and recently I've noticed my headlights get brighter when I rev the car. (Both in neutral at stand still and in motion) I also noticed that my dash lights and interior lights get brighter as well. The headlights are also very dim whether or not the car is revving or not, revving only brightens them a little and overall they're still dim. The A/C fan also gets louder and blows harder when revving. So somehow all of these problems are connected to something and I'm at a loss on what to do next. I've been reading a lot about this and my best guess is there's a problem with the grounds. If so, where are the grounds located? My problem isn't with the lights/fan getting brighter, but a possible problem with low voltage getting to these systems at idle (or in general) What do you guys think could be the source of all this? Sorry for the barrage of questions but I'm new to electrical gremlins and it's all especially confusing to me. Thanks for any help
  9. My son's 79' 280zx had HID headlights with projector lenses installed by the previous owner. In the past a headlight would go out and we'd replace the bulb or ballast and it would resolve the issue. Recently however the driver's side headlight went out and I can't seem to figure out why. It's getting power to the ballast (a little over 12 volts) and we installed both a new bulb and ballast but no luck. My question however is more in regards to the relay harness. All over the internet I see where a relay harness is used but in the illustrations they contain only one relay and only one of the factory headlight plugs is connected to trigger the relay. In my son's configuration, each headlight has it's own relay and both factory headlight plugs are connected. Has anyone seen this type setup before? I'm thinking I may have a bad ground somewhere, but I'm not sure where the second ground would be. Thank you.
  10. Wondering if anyone knows of place that makes newer connectors for the head/tail lights on the 260z? I've had too many issues with the old wiring harness and decided to pull it. Nothing was really hooked up or worked anyway. (SBC swapped) So I've wired up the ignition and such already and just need lights. I'd like to avoid using any of the original wiring so I want to get rid of the pigtails coming off the lights. Anything out there that directly fits in the Z head and tail light housings?

  12. Hi guys. I'm at a bit of an impass with the headlights on my '77 280z and could use a little help. I did some searching here and elsewhere, got a lot of leads but nothing that worked so far All of my lights are working except my headlight. Turn signals, brake lights, parking lights all work. the combination switch turns the side marker running lights on and off but not the Headlights. fuses are good. Headlight bulbs show continuity with a mutimeter, and continuity from the stalk to the fuses look good and from the fuses to the headlight wiring looks good too. All the connectors look solid. (pulled them all apart, sprayed them down with contact cleaner and re attached) I pulled the combination switch apart tonight and cleaned everything with deoxit. pulled open the top of the stalk with the actual connectors and the High/low beam on the other side. (even cleaned the wiper control underneath, because i didn't know what it was.) Is there something im missing with maybe a ground somewhere? or another part of the system im missing? any help would be great. Heres the wiring diagram im working off of from the FSM
  13. I do not ever remember seing a favorite headlight page. These are mine. The headlights are H-4 with 55 watt low beams and 100 watt high beams. The plastic headlight buckets were replaced with metal ones and welded onto the fenders. Riv-nuts were installed in the metal headlight buckets to hold the headlight covers in place.

Hey guys, im pretty new to the forums, hopefully yall dont bash down too hard on me when i ask about hid setups... ive tried searching through threads and such and have had no luck, not very used to these forum things. anyways i am in the process of buying a z from a guy near me in nc here and have already made a list of things i want to do lol starting with mechanical things to tighten up all the bushings and get all the potential rust areas sanded down primered and coated with bedliner etc.. was wondering what you guys that have hid setups have done? this is going to be a weekend warrior but we all know we like to see the road when we drive at night for sonic meets and cars and coffee meets when the sun hasnt come up yet etc.. i was looking into them and found some plastic housings on ebay i plan to use with some extra sealant around the edges to make sure it doesnt get any extra moisture in them (like every other replacement light housing ive ever bought on ebay does) and since they use h4 bulbs, ill just transplant some hids ive used in my other cars into this one with some fresh h4 bulbs to fit the new housings, on its own relay, and its own straight connection to the battery with the relay attached to the stock headlight switch. has as anyone had any problems of bulb size with hi/low h4 bulbs? as in the bulb behind too long for the housing or not fitting and locking into the housing tightly? everything i do i do down to a tee and dont feel like dealing with returns to these untrustworthy aftermarket ebay companies and hid companies since we all know how easy it is to deal with ebay businesses.... ive also seen the makeshift aftermarket hid "globe" setups like you see in the bmws and new fords (and lots of new cars) and am wondereding if anyone has taken apart any of the headlights and put those globes in there that make the beam nice and flat on the top edge so it doesnt blind oncoming traffic... thanks guys! let me know if you have any suggestions for me!
