1970 240z Project (Very slow, money is tight)

It's been awhile since I've posted.  But I keep on truckin...at a slow pace  :(

 

Ive been working on the motor, which is about done.  I was having some doubts after I bolted the head down to the block, some oil started leaking down the sides of the block.  The only oil used in the rebuild was the grease for the installation of the cam and the oiling of the head bolts.  The block was the only part not needing to be taken apart and rebuilt, it was perfect when I pulled the motor apart, the head was the issue.  My only guess as to where maybe any extra oil came from was the holes for the head bolts in the block...I had the block upside down for almost this whole build.

When I pulled the motor...actually when I got the car, i saw a pretty good oil leak on/all around the oil pump.  I cleaned all the oil off around the pump to try and find the source, everything looked good, until I checked the gasket in the middle of the pump, pretty old and needs a new gasket.  That is on order along with a new oil pressure sender and bulbs for my dash.

I emailed the paint shop, hoping to get them to come to the house to give me a quote on the work I need done.  I'll make a video soon and post it up  :D

Now that I think about it, I remember threading the head bolts all the way into the block and back out to get any extra gunk out of the bolt holes. Got a good bit of crap to come out in the last couple of turns of the bolt. I think it's no big deal, run it, re-torque the HG after a few hundred miles, and you're off. You can check compression if you're feeling really frisky. Save that new HG for when you really need it. ;)

Im going to finish it up and run it.  I have the extra gasket, so I'll be holding on to that incase I need it.  Im waiting on my oil pump middle gasket which should be here by thur.

I got a new piece for the car  :D   I was going to purchase a kameari intake manifold, and I was going to have to shove out some dough, but after looking on a WTB thread and talking to Leon, I made a purchase of a brand new Harada intake that was on Ebay.  I was hesitant at first since I haven't bought anything over seas on ebay, but after reading reviews on the seller and sending a few emails, I went ahead and made the purchase.  Its looks good and just about mirror image to the old competition version.  Heres a few mocked up photos, Im using an messed up gasket thats all tape.

I also went to Utah this past week to see my friend, and also to participate in the ST octane academy.  I was taught how to do J turns, 180 degree ebrake turns, E brake parking box's,  I was able to have track time in the schools Focus and Fiesta ST's including an instructor to help us better our skills as well.  I took second place out of 17 people in the autocross competition  :rolleyes:   I'll post some videos when I get them loaded on my channel.   Here's my new badging for the car that only Octane academy completions get, also my trophy which is the same hydraulic brake handle that was in the cars! post-15914-0-99584700-1414996012_thumb.jpgpost-15914-0-31507400-1414996028_thumb.jpg

I know haven't posted in awhile, but bare with me I have been very busy!  Our son was born and I get some time off to help care for the little guy :)  We are so happy he's here!  There are plans for him to become a Z guy when he gets to the right age.  Oliver was born on Feb 10th and hes a big handful!

Yes, congrats on the baby boy. Run constant video and pics of the critter, lot's of "firsts" are on the way.  What is this spray bar you're talking about? I'm pretty iffy on my OEM as well. When I first pulled the valve cover off, one of the bar ends was laying on the head.

Yup, because the spray bar is just pressed in fittings It will become loose and possibly end up somewhere else other then where it's supposed to be after age and higher RPMS.  Larry makes them by order out of aluminum and they come with mounting hardware.  I went with this application because Im keeping my car as close to original aside from squeezing some extra power out.  I would email larry and see if you can do an order if your interested in keeping it original, otherwise you can always upgrade to internally oiled cam and cam towers.  Larrys email is.. larryracer240z@gmail.com

Also thanks!  I've been taking tons of photos and videos.  I need to get a new camera to record, been thinking of a go pro since its an excuse to get one lol.

Its here!!! I finally received my new Oil spray bar today in the mail.  I must say the craftsmanship is awesome!  Here are a few shots I snapped before dinner for me and the baby tonight.  I'll do the install hopefully this week...depending on how the wife feels about that...

So I've been thinking about painting the car myself again.  I feel I'm not going to have the funds to take it to a shop and get the car painted right.  So I'm starting to look for good websites that can show the process on what to do, I know I'm going to have to buy a paint gun and and painting materials.  This was a job I wasn't looking to do since I don't want to do a shitty job, but with the baby now here, I think I may have to try to do it.

I found some polishing compound a friend gave me awhile back, I may try to use that in the next few days to see if I can get a nice shiny 2400 on the cover, then give a quick rattle can of the rest.  YAY!!! Progress!

 

 

I found a guy online who has a shop in my city that has experience with Z's, I asked him about welding and if he had an hourly rate, $125 per hour.  I sent him some pics to see what the time frame may be since that is the next thing stopping me form painting, I'll go ahead and see what the damage is for shits and giggles.

Wow! I can't believe it has been 2 years since I updated my blog.  OK well here it goes, the car is not done yet... surprise surprise :rolleyes: I have however finished building the motor, updated my garage a little bit, removed all my suspension, and rebuilt the hatch area(except install the hatch plate, I need to bend it back to shape a little bit and I've been putting it off since I hang out with my kids during the day and all the loud stuff can't happen unless I get a moment outside). I have primed the passenger door and the hatch both inside and out. I have painted the interior hatch and most of the passenger area with anti rust paint with installation of sound deadner(peel and seal).  So I have been busy :D We have another baby due this week so I'm sure I'm going to have to take a break from all the work I have done, but I know that I will get beck to it since I have been way more productive with the baby around then in the past. I have all my pictures of the work I did on my camera, and I'm on the tablet right now so let me do some attachments later.

 

To the previous post I made.... well the price was a lot, so that's why I went ahead and started welding myself. It took awhile as a learning curve since I was welding on metal that was thinned from removing the rusted areas on the hatch. And I have done a few hole fillings which was easier. My next daunting task is fixing the rear fender well. I had to cut the rust out but unlike cutting one layer for installing flares I had to cut the bottom layer as well, so I'm going to try to repair it the way you would with installing fender flares(slicing, bending and welding) If I have to add extra metal to get it to flex and touch then I do have extras.  Pics will come in hopefully by tomorrow.

I was searching for some classic recaro seats  for a long time.  I know I could have easily picked up some seats from the z store or Craigslist but I know I wouldn't be very happy until I found what I wanted.  While I was looking on Instagram I came upon a post for some seats. It led me to speaking with the person selling the seats on eBay. The seats were organically from a 1970's Porsche. They were used for a few years from the original owner then pulled out for the car to be turned into a racecar. The seats were basically put into storage and not used. I knew I had to have these seats.  I purchased them and was extremely happy with my purchase, they were still very brand new looking and the c They fitushioning was very stiff still. The driver seat has a little where maybe from being in storage or before they were removed from the original car but that's something I can overlook. They fit well in the Z and I'm currently making bra

Video update on my build from a couple months back.  It shows how the seats look and I talk about making my seat brackets.  I was thinking originally of trying to get some Z seat rails to work.  turned out to be easier to fab up some brackets to make the recaro seat rails work.

This is Part one on me making the seat bracket for the first seat.  My phone wasn't doing so well with recording so I switched over to my older canon camera(that will change when my new camera comes in next week)  I still wanted to document the process on what it takes to make your dream car.
