Shadow Logger - connect MegaSquirt to Android phones

It's not technically our product; this is from EFI Analytics. But we get asked for a MegaSquirt program for smart phones all the time, and so I wanted to give them a plug. They've got a new program called Shadow Logger out for Android phones, currently in beta testing. Check it out here:

And SparkFun is a good place as well for Bluetooth modules

 

Hopefully this is the first step to having TS on the Android devices. For now I'm using iDisplay to use my phone as a remote display from my laptop. That way I can mount it on the dash/windshield/gauge cluster and monitor whatever I want through my Android device.

I cannot get the EFI analytics website to work to order the tested bluetooth module? I haven't emailed Phil yet, but curious if anyone else ordered this through the website.

 

And his Tomcat server has debugging on, so it's displaying his API key and yahoo market password. I've emailed him.

Did anyone get the Bluetooth adapter to work with one of those USB to serial converters? It seems like the Bluetooth dongle would require a host PC.

What do you mean? You either have a serial->USB to connect to a computer, or a serial->BT dongle to connect to a computer (or phone).

 

I've got a BT dongle on the way that I'm going to try with my Linux laptop.

 

My question is on the serial->BT dongle. I'm thinking that using a serial->USB adapter in the MS with a BT dongle will not work.

Yes. I don't think this will work because the BT dongle needs a host to load the device driver (so does the serial to USB adapter). You could plug the serial to USB adapter to a laptop with BT, and then go wireless from there to your Android.

 

Serial -> USB -> Netbook -> BT Dongle -> Android should work.

Picked up a 7" Galaxy Tab to run Shadowlogger, and it's awesome! I highly recommend this guys, it adds GPS location and speed, and g-force per direction and cumulative. I was worried about the GPS not being accurate, but it is! This is going to be amazing on the track.

 

The GPS plots in MLV and you can color it by any value available. This gives you a map of your track that you can evaluate with:

 

- Speed as you go around the track

- G-forces in corners

- AFR to see if bumps/corners are affecting your fueling

- TPS to show if your foot is betraying what you think you're doing

 

There are all sorts of new possibilities! I've attached a map of my morning commute as an example, with speed as the color coding (Z-axis). You can clearly see stoplights!
