Life is funny sometimes

Well over the last few months my life has had some interesting turns. I started my own custom home building company back at the end of 2010. I have been with a production builder for the last 9 years. I was managing both until Feb. My daughter was born 2-6 and I was laid off from my day gig on 2-10. Funny thing is my wife works for the same company. She is still out on maternity leave. I was given what they considered a severance package, but I have another word for it. 12 of us were herded into a room and given a bs speach, envelopes, and sent on our way. I then started to dedicate my time and resources to my company. I am doing well with more and more business coming my way. I am blessed for sure. I have started to do oil and gas inspections in addition to my home building.

My wife got a call yesterday from her boss asking if she was coming back to work or if she was quitting..... I laughed knowing something was going on. Turns out that they cut too many staff and people are worn out cause they are not getting paid what they deserve. It also turns out that they have had two people quit on them as well.......

Hearing this I am happy knowing they are getting a taste of their own medicine........ Pay back is a *****........

I got corporate MBA'd...not 30 days later they called my old boss asking if they knew anybody who could do training on all our product, as well as competitive machines. "Sure, he knows it all...you had me LAY HIM OFF LAST MONTH!"

I regularly get calls from them asking to come back. My answer is always the same "Send me a written offer of contract with all remuneration specifics and we will talk..." Seems they always are fishing...but never want to bait that hook.

Screw them. Of the guys laid off, I was the one smart enough to dictate the time and place, and got it at a Spires Coffee Shop...that way I got a meal out of it. The other guys were told to report to the local distributor and were axed over the phone with the local manager there to take their corporate AMEX and truck keys.

Corporations are idiot factories. Just remember that as your business grows and strive not to make the same stupid mistakes.

I am doing what I like. I am building what I want when I want to. It is good to turn down work that I don't want. On the other hand I get to learn something new every day. Maybe one day my daughters will take over where I eventually leave it....... Bit that is not for a very long time...

Workers, work and managers meet. In the corp I work for it seems that only those that can keep their mouth shut and are super politically correct (absurdly so) move up.

I really like my postition so I really have no complaints, but when I look at all the meetings my manager and director are in all day long and back to back, to back, it just doesn't seem like fun to me at all.

I always liked the saying "They rise to the level of their incompetence".

Indeed, ironies abound. Congratulations on a successful business and on severing the umbilical from corporate life. Personally, I prefer to say "no" to capitalism entirely, and have spent my so-called adult life working for the federal government. It oozes corporate-speak and the smarmy culture of management, but at the same time, the overall impotence of managers gives employees very wide freedom, especially if those employees are technical specialists and define their own job.
