Reckless skilled vintage porsche driver?

I'm not sure if I saw it here or in the Jalopnik forums but there was a youtube video I watched that looked like it was recorded in the 70s. In the video is a Porsche 911 flying through corners at ludicrous speed. The driver is passing dudes the entire time and it looks like he never uses his brakes. AFAIK it was a French driver...It looked like a legit Le Mans status race.

He's skilled. If you drive a particular race car long enough you know exactly what it will do and how to get the absolute most out of it. There's nothing scary or spectacular to it - except of course to those that are not driving the car and don't have the high confidence in it that the familiar driver does.

I wouldn't want to be a on track with him.

You can see him forcing other drivers out of their lines and passing recklessly on the grass, at least 2 wheels on the grass.

No matter what you may think, he's been driving thar course for years and has no records of piling his car up. ;)

What is your experience tracking cars? I don't want to make any comments until I know what your experience level is...

Regardless if he's piled a car up or not, that doesn't mean that I would want to be on the same track as him.

Not nearly as much as you have, but again, that doesn't mean that I can't look at how someone else drives and know that I wouldn't be comfortable being on the same track as them, hell there's people I do that with when I'm driving on public streets.

I forgot to mention in my last reply, you can just barely catch him using the brakes, using heel 'n' toe, there's one corner where you can see it pretty clearly as he comes into a corner.

Yeah no doubt he uses brakes lol but the reason I said it was more so the 'effect' of his driving. The way he carried his momentum through the turns. He looks absolutely unstoppable. Regardless of what you guys have to say about him, I wanna be like him when I grow up. :D

My point in asking is because I would bet that all the guys that track regularly would agree that this guy isnt a risk. He is doing a great job keeping his rythme slicing through traffic. I would be totally safe following him or being overtaken by him.

Then again I am used to bumpdrafting spec miatas at 110 mph too.

Uuuhhh, this is a race. This driver is very skilled and in complete control of his quarter million dollar Porsche. The passes that look "close" to you are normal racing passes. He isn't forcing any car off the road, the drivers in front are moving over (if necessary) and giving him some room because he's obviously the faster car. He did nothing reckless. Pascal Pandelaar has a professional racing resume that includes DTCC which is probably the most difficult sedan racing series in the world.

BTW... looked at the video closely and he never puts a wheel off course. He does use the FIA curbing but I do (did) too when I raced. That's considered parts of the racing surface. Also, if you notice on the Kemmel Straight he puts his hand on the mirror. He's either thanking the driver of the Falcon for pointing him by or asking the Falcon driver to not re-pass him before Les Combes.

I had a new student last year put it like this:

"You have no idea how hard this is until you are here in the driver's seat on track with your car potentially going its fastest. Memorixing the track, each braking zone, each corner, where the flaggers are, and what the flags mean is just data overload".

And that is just a portion of what you need to know. It's very misleading to sit and watch someone's incar video. I've been critized before by people seeing my own DE footage and thinking I'm to aggressive on track in our sessions with my clubs. Reality is if I was a danger, I'd be talked to or excused from playing with them, much less TEACHING with them. Don't judge when you see someone's in car footage. If you think something doesn't look right, ASK a question. But don't judge or make false assumptions, especially if you come from a vantage point of no solo track experience.

I've been called aggressive in some driving I do, and that's with nobody else on the road!<img src="http://forums.hybridz.org/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif" alt="" class="bbc_emoticon"><br><br>When you hit the zone, you're there!

<div><br></div><div>HOLY HELL! I just watched the video!</div><div><br></div><div>1) the black blob between the catch fence near the middle of the old F1 Pits on the right before entry to Eau Rouge may well be ME!<img src="http://forums.hybridz.org/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif" alt="" class="bbc_emoticon"></div><div>2) on that second smaller video below, there is a striped GT350 Mustang just after the last white 911---that looks like one of the VA Motorsports cars, they were in the #3 New F1 Pit area.</div><div><br></div><div>I think I know that red 911! I may have photos of it. I'm going to have to go read the stewards list from the Spa events  I've attended.</div><div><br></div><div>Freak me out!</div>

If you want fast Porsche videos that make you nervous how about this one.

While this Lemans video says 917 some believe its a 962.

.

Its said Mark Donohue sat for ten to twenty minutes after driving one of these at Le Mans to compose himself and control the shaking .
