75 280Z Project...I have a feeling it'll be a long one!

Recommended Posts

It's been several months, time for an update!

I've been driving the car for Once in a while, took it to a few local cars and coffee events, but it was time to get it painted, there's only so long that I can keep driving it around flat black til it gets to me!

It was time to start prepping for paint, so I started taking the car apart in my garage

Big pile of parts

Conveniently after I got this far, a friend of mine suggested I bring it to his shop to work on it,

And since I didn't want to put it all back together, on the tow truck it went.

After 2 months, this is how far I got on the car, and with a baby due in a short time, I had to send the car off to be finished.

Overall I am very pleased with how the paint job came out. I wasn't too happy how they painted the entire gas tank white, as well as my muffler and exhaust piping, but some black spray paint and a can of aircraft remover fixed it up.

I wish I could say I've been driving the car more, but for the past 5 months, I've been plagued with fuel gremlins from hell. So much so, that I've decided to get rid of the stock EFI.....and go with a carb setup. I know the logical thing would have been to do a standalone EFI, but I was so fed up with troubleshooting one thing after another, I just wanted something...simple.

Now, I've never worked with SU carbs, or carbs in general, I grew up in the era of fuel injection, but I wanted to try something different without spending a whole lot of money, so I got a set of 3 screw SU carbs, complete with manifolds and linkage. Pretty complete setup, but it was very rough looking, most folks probably wouldn't even bother with cleaning, and rebuilding these. One of the suction pistons was completely froze inside the dome, but over the last few days, I've been cleaning, and sand blasting parts, to make these carbs usable, and make them look somewhat nice. I have one more carb to sand blast, then I can start putting everything together. I already bought an electric 4.5psi fuel pump, I just need to wire that in, and hopefully soon, I can drive the car again. It truly is sad seeing it collect dust in the garage!
