17x9.5 -20 w/ 275/40 or 45

Recommended Posts

Yes, yet another "will this fit my" car thread. I've searched, searched some more, tore some hair out, searched some more, read everything I can find, looked at every car in the show your wheels thread (all 103 pages), and answered questions from my wife about why I'm spending so much time on the internet. Post #1914 is running these same size wheels with a slightly narrower tire. I don't know what suspension mods he may have done to make them fit.

I've got 2.5" coilovers, TTT LCA's front and back, 5 lug hubs and standard depth ZG flares. I read that people like to switch to 5 lug because there are more wheel choices. Maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places, but I'm not seeing that great of a selection of wheels with the proper offset. I really like the look of the RKR, and they offer them in 5 lug but only in 9.5"-20 offset or 8.5"-0 offset. Like most people, I want the widest tire reasonable, and I'd prefer to avoid staggered.

Will these fit with difficulty or ease? If with ease, am I leaving a bunch of potential on the table? I guess I'd also ask if you have a favorite place to search for wheels?

I found a post by John Coffey stating with coilovers you can expect to fit a 4.5" backspace. I wasn't able to find out what one can expect in front spacing w/ ZG flares.

Thanks, Joe

Any further discovery JoeK? I'm in the middle of trying to figure this out with Marugen flares. Everyone says 275's fit fine in the rear, which I bought) but at 4.5" BS they barely fit flush. I'm using the Wheel Fit tool to simulate wheels which I have yet to purchase. I also have T3 coilovers.

No discovery yet. Decided to hold off on wheel purchase until I return from vacation, in a couple more weeks. But based on the link that Bludestiny sent, I think I'll be ordering 275/45 all around, on 17x9.5 wheels with -20 offset. Even, so it'll be a bit before I have the car on the ground with a motor in it. But I need to have something to even roll the car around on, so I have to make an expensive commitment. The only wheels I have now are 4 lug.

I'm using the same tires. 245 front on 9" wheel, 275 rear on 9.5" wheel. I have the rear tire mocked up with 5.25" backspace (which works out to -2mm which seems weird) and I like the look. I'm trying to keep the rubber inside the flares. Clearance on the inside is better than it appears in the photos.

I was going to go with -13 in the front but that may change. What are you guys doing for wheels? I'm using an American Racing custom built. These are also Marugen flares from RHDJapan.

For curiosity sake, can you eyeball a measurement from the factory fender to the shoulder of the tires in the rear, at the middle of the arch?

I plan to order the Rota RKR wheels. For some reason I can't explain, I don't like 5 spoke wheels on the z cars. I think I associate 5 spoke wheels with '70s muscle cars. And there are some really great looking z's with 5 spoke. Edited by JoeK

Well, for what its worth, it looks like I'll need larger flares. I did get the Rota RKR 17x9.5 -20 wheels and mounted 275/40's. Tires are Sumitomo HTZR. With the Marugen Shoukai ZG flares, the tires are about 3/4" outside the flare with the adjustable control arms all the way in. Not sure why this combo seems to work for some but not me. I could probably dial my camber way in, but I'm not really fan of that look on my own cars.

So, it appears as though my next best yhing will be to get a set of jpngarage Wide ZG's. Any feedback on fitment would be welcome. Anybody know of others making wide ZG's? jpngarage flares seem to get mixed reviews.

This is exactly what I was afraid of. I had my wheels made by American Racing and they will do any backspace and bolt pattern so I bought a Wheel Fit Tool and used the Marugen flares and found 5"  BS was perfect, which is -6 offset (on a 17 x 9.5 wheel). WAY different. The fronts are 17 x 9 and 0 offset. They could use about another 1/4" of poke though. Tires are Conti DWS, 245 and 275.

I'll post a pic with everything mounted and on the ground next week, the flares were just painted and have yet to re installed. The attached pics don't do the fit justice.
