1971 240z Refurbish in Denver

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a 1971 Series 2 240z that I bought last weekend. The condition is good and the car is 100% original. It had been sitting for ten years. With some regular maintenance (like replacing every singe rubber part) it will be a really nice dependable car. I have a laundry list of maintenance items but have never owned or worked on a 240z. I changed the fluids, unstuck a wheel cylinder, and got tires. Now it is safe to drive. It has a build date of 6/71. I am a little confused because, it looks like the car has some parts from a series 1 and some from the series 2. I want to keep it as close to original as possible and make sure I order the right stuff.

I am starting with the brake system rebuild and would like to rebuild the master cylinder. I have an early style tandem master cylinder, the one with the large reservoir in the front. Will this kit work for it?

I am also ordering seat covers. My seats recline so I am ordering the seat covers from the 72-73 car. Has anyone ordered the upholstery kit and foam inserts from the z store? are they good quality?

Also, my outer shift boot doesn't have a string on it like the 72-73 shift boots you can order. Did the series 2 cars have a string and the series one cars not have it?

Thanks for the info. I know I have a lot of research ahead of me.

I couldn't find out if early series 2 cars have series 1 parts on them that are not found on the later series 2 cars. For example my car is a 1971 with reclining seats. Most seat cover vendors list the reclining seat covers starting in 1972. The master cylinder and the shift boot are other examples of differences I have found. Are there other instances where this might apply?

I like to be careful ordering parts over the internet. You can't take the old parts off and compare them with new ones at the auto parts store.

WRT the master cylinder rebuild kit from Zcardepot....I tried it and was not impressed with the fitment of the seals.  Other people may have had success with that kit, but it didn't do it for me.  To be fair to Zcardepot, I don't believe they produce it -- I think it's produced by another vendor in the U.K.  A new MC from Cardone ended up only costing $10 more than the seal kit, so that's the route I eventually went.

Also, for car seat cover kits, and upholstery needs in general, I've seen some vendors on FB that produce really nice stuff in genuine leather.  Check the S30 pages like Datsun Parts and Needs and 240z 260z 280z Lovers.

I bought the book from amazon for $25. It will be here tomorrow with free one day shipping. Amazing.

I would do the cardone replacement but I am having a hard time finding a master cylinder that is an early style tandem with the large reservoir in front.

Some after market master cylinders do not have the large reservoir in front. As long as the master cylinder is correct in all other aspects then it doesn't matter. You can always swap the front reservoir from the old master cylinder onto the new one for a "stock" appearance.
