Hitting AFR goals vs smoothing cells. What is more important?

A lot of what I read is getting the maps to be fairly smooth so I have been autotuning to get near AFR goals but then I will manually smooth cells out.  The problem I am having is my AFRs will vary 1 AFR when cruising.  Obviously, the goal is to give the car what the car wants but what is more important when tuning is pretty close?  Smoothing the tables and ignoring AFR swings as long as the engine will not be harmed?  Or is hitting AFRs goals the best way to go?
