Was Working...now no spark and ballast resistor hot

I have a 72 240z with a L28 and 280z distributor.  All was working in the ignition department and she was driving.  Took her out for a drive and then she sat a few days and not there is no spark.  Now when I have the key on the ballast resistor and ignition coil are getting hot.  Ant suggestions?

I do have a question about one wire that is not being used and it looks like it may go to the where the distributor mounts.  Should it be hooked up?

I bought the following:

PerTronix Flame-Thrower II

New Distributor Pickup Coil

Rotor & Cap

 

I want to run the PerTronix Flame-Thrower II so I can remove the ballast resistor.

The coil and resistor would be getting hot because they have current flowing through them.  That would be because there is a short circuit on the wiring after the coil negative terminal.   Looking at all of those exposed connections, that would not be a surprise.

 

If you can't find the bare wire or connector that is shorting to ground, your ignition module might be bad.

 

That spade end is just connected to ground.  There's a wire that needs a ground somewhere.
